PERSONAL. The School Board of Leavenworth, Kansas, resolved to admit colored children to the public schools. John E. Smith, ex-member of Congress from Ohio, is appointed Commissioner of Indian Affairs. James Lark, the California millionaire, has expressed his desire to be buried at the summits of Mount Hamilton. Emerson, the humanitarian, is described as a tall, benevolent-looking gentleman of tender and sympathetic expression. Max Muller, Professor of Comparative Philology at All Souls' College, has offered his resignation, and will leave England in 1876. Gladstone likes his pun once in awhile. Speaking of funeral reform he says that it is a subject which "should be gravely considered." An adopted daughter of Henry Wilson is living in Norfolk County, Mass. Her name is Eva Wilson; she is ten years old, and is said to be a bright, intelligent child, loved by every one. Whittier sent this response recently, to a request for his autograph: "Our lives are albums, written through. With good or ill with false or true; And as the blessed angels turn The pages of years, God grant they read the good with smiles, And blot the ill with tears!" The Rev. Dr. McLaren, in his letter accepting the Bishopic of Illinois, says: "Never was there a time, I believe, in the whole history of the Kingdom of Heaven upon earth, when common dangers and widespread religious destitution have so conspired to mass and fuse the forces of the Church of God into solid phalanx." He is now in his seventy-fifth year, but is vigorous, and has a clear, strong voice. He has already preached in various places in England, and is about to visit Scotland. Mr. Martin F. Tupper has written a drama in five acts entitled "Washington," which he intends to have brought out in this country during the coming Centennial year. Col. Forney writes that Mr. Tupper will come over in person and superintend the introduction of the play. The characters represented are Washington. PROCEDINGS OF CONGRESS. The opening of the Forty-fourth Congress was marked by the presence in and around the Capitol of a larger crowd than probably ever before watched similar proceedings. The wet and dreary weather seemed to have no effect in restraining the expressness of the multitude which has flowed into the city the past few days, and from an early hour the galleries of the House of Representatives were packed as closely as possible. Then the hall itself, and all its approaches, and every available space became gradually filled up, until as the hour of noon approached it was almost impossible for one to make his way in any direction through the mass. At 12 o'clock the House was called to order by McPherson, Clerk of the House of the Forty-third Congress, and the hall was cleared of all not entitled to its privileges. The attendance of members was very full, nearly every seat being occupied. McPherson then called the names of members by States, commencing with Maine. In regard to the representation from the Third District of New York, the Clerk reminded the House that the person first elected had died, and the person elected to fill the vacancy had presented credentials so peculiar in form that the Clerk preferred to submit the question to the House. In reference to the Louisiana delegation, the Clerk said he had two sets of certificates for four districts, but both sets indicating the election of the same person. That as to the Fifth District he had received two certificates, one signed by William Pitt Kellogg, showing the election of Morey, and the other signed by John McEnery, showing the election of Spencer; and that as Kellogg was the de facto Governor, the Clerk had acted on his certificate and had enrolled Morey. As to the Sixth District he had only received one certificate signed by Kellogg, and he had acted on that. The call concluded, the Clerk announced that 286 members had answered to their names. The absentees are: Dobbins of New Jersey, Egbert of Pennsylvania, who had returned home this morning on account of death in his family, Stevens of Georgia, and Oliver of Iowa. These, with two vacancies from the Thirty-third District of New York, and the Fourth District of Illinois, make the 292 members of which the House is composed. Lamar moved that the House proceed to the election of Speaker. Agreed to. Lamar put in nomination for the office of Speaker of the House for the Forty-fourth Congress, Michael C. Kerr, member elect from the State of Indiana. Wheeler, of New York—I nominate for the same position, James G. Blaine, of Malne. The purposes of the Almighty are perfect and must prevail, though we erring mortals may fail to accurately perceive them in advance. These animals serve all the purposes of oxen in the field, and are used for plowing, etc. They are usually stupid and docile, but every once in a while they must be allowed to go down and roll in the water, and appear to enjoy it amazingly. The ducks and geese are raised in immense numbers all through this region, the eggs being hatched by means of artificial heat, and the little fowls and big ones kept together and led around and watched over by "duck boys," as sheep are looked after by a shepherd. The quacking and gobbling of these feathered flocks is very amusing. To the new comer, the most striking objects by the wayside are the peculiar-shaped banyan trees, with their immense trunks, guarded and twisted, and branches of great size stretching out in all directions, and swinging long branches of "feelers" toward the ground, as though to take root again. The cotton-wood trees also attain great size in this neighborhood. The trunks are star-shaped at the base, and rise with such symmetry and strength as to give a really fine architectural effect. ANECROTE OF PRESIDENT MADISON.—Mr Madison, a nephew of the President, is still living in Switzerland, Ohio, near Cincinnati. He well remembers a visit from the ex-President while he and his father, Job Madison, the President's brother, were living in New York, and working in a hay-field. The Virginian remarked to his brother, "Job, you should have some of our black boys to relieve you of this drudgery." "James," was the plain and distant answer, "I don't like your black boy system of labor." The President passed a moment thoughtfully, acknowledged that the slave system was wrong, and said, "he had long feared that civil war, possibly a disruption of the Union would be the result. You and I will not live to see it; but these boys may." Which prediction has been fulfilled to the letter. SAN FRANCISCO MARKET. We note increased activity in the general business of the city for the week under review—the result of a return of pleasant weather, as well as the assurance which abundance of rain has given of probable large crops of every kind throughout the State. The money market has also felt the impulse; confidence seems to be more fully restored, and money is more easily obtained for all legitimate business purposes. Since July 1st, 1875, we have dispatched 102 ships to the United Kingdom, loaded with 2,600,000 centsals wheat and flour having a value in round numbers of $8,000,000; we also note the fact of quite a large number of ships having been chartered and loaded with wheat and flour from the Columbia river, Oregon, during the season. The disengaged tonnage in our harbor at date amounts to about 28,000 tons, with a large number of ships now due, and daily arriving—sufficient at least to transport all the surplus grain we have to spare this season. Rates of charter in advanced, while wood is firm at quotation of last week; the present rate for first-class grain carriers to a port direct being $212.9d @ £15a. The Liverpool wheat market is firm, but without improvement in rates. With us the market is quite active, at about the same rates as given last week. At this writing the market is firm and strong, with an upward tendency. We note continued large sales of wheat, slightly damaged, at a concession from regular rates. Choice milling continues scarce, and extreme rates are paid by our millers. Flour continues in fair demand in superfine and extra superfine grades for export; but extra brands of Family are in brisk demand for home consumption, at unchanged rates. Barley is in large stock, with free offerings, but the market is weak, with moderate transactions noted at declining rates. Oats continue in fair demand and prices are well maintained. Oregon is sending down large quantities, which find a ready market. Rye is in moderate demand; prices unchanged. WHEAT—The market here continues quiet, with large offerings, the bulk of which is either damaged or of inferior quality; choice is scarce and meets ready sale at the extreme of our quotations. Prices at the Liverpool wheat market have experienced little change during the week. The latest Liverpool quotations are for average, 10s8d@11s 14; Club, 11s@11s 7d. Our present market quotations are as follows: Choice milling, $1 95 @$2 00; fair to good export grades, $1 874 @$1 95; damaged and inferior at less rates. "Throw Physic to the Dogs; I'll None of It." We do not in the least feel like blaming Macbeth for this expression of disgust; indeed, we are rather inclined to sympathize with him. Even newsags most of the cautious offered to the public are great, regulative-looking pills, the very appearance of which is sufficient to "turn one's stomach."
