The only living descendant of George D. Preston is a member of the Arab Nation. The article on Islam in the second volume of the new edition by William Perry is one of the most influential works on Islam. It provides a good introduction to its subject and is given so that it can serve as a useful resource for learning about Islam.
"Rered under an open land, and early habitated to the light of moon, all the sound and glitter of weapons and to all the accessories of human life, the coat grows up free from vice or timidity, and even acquires a degree of intelligence that surprises a stranger. Barley and dates are the chief stall provender; but the grass of the pasture grounds, in the selection of which much care is taken, is the ordinary nourishment of an Arab horse. Of water the allowance is always kept purposely scant. A good Nejad will cantter four-and-twenty hours in summer time and eight-and-forty in winter without once requiring a drink. Raw meat, dr'al, is occasionally given in small quantities when extra exertion is required; licorne is employed for lowering the tone. Goldings are very rare. The color that most frequently occurs is gray; then comes chestnut; then white and sorrel; mottled gray and black are new and then to be found; dark bay never. Colta are ridden early—too early indeed—in their third, or even second year, and are soon broken into a steady walk or canter and to the ambling pace which is a special favorite with Arab riders; racing, an Arab amusement from time immemorial, and the game of 'jerzed,' a kind of tournament, or mock fight, with blunt palm sticks, highly popular throughout the peninsula, complete the training as to wind and pace. Saddles are seldom used in Nejd, and stirrups never; but both are occasionally employed in Hijaz and Yemen. So it is also, with bits, the place of which is taken in Nejd by hilteropes, the real guidance of the animal being almost wholly effected by the pressure of the rider's leg and knee. Shoes too, are of rare occurrence, nor are they needed in the light sand-mixed soil of the central province; on the other hand, the boots are often rubbed with grease, to counteract the drying effects of the heated ground. Of all niceties of grooming, docking and clipping excepted, the Arabs are masters; and their natural kindness to animals—a quality which they share with most Orientals, together with the care every reasonable man bestows on a valuable article of property—insures to

The only living descendant of George D. Prentice is a grandson of fourteen years of age, who bears the same name. He is now canvassing the South for his grandfather's forthcoming book of poems.
An old widow lady, a Christian by profession, who died suddenly in Liverpool, has caused something of a sensation by bequeathing $20,000 to Dr. Hermann Haar, formerly a lecturer in a Jew's Synagogue in Liverpool, and now a Hebrew teacher in New Orleans, and the rest of her fortune to a Jewish hospital in Jerusalem. Her relatives threaten to contest the will.
Ex-President Thurss expresses his sympathy in the movement for prison reform in this letter to Dr. Wines, published in the Evening Post: "I thank you, my dear sir, for your excellent and cordial letter, and offer my best wishes for your wise and humane work, in which all civilized nations have an interest. To punish men in order to correct them is the best of social labors, and the one whose success is most to be desired. Accept the assurance of my esteem and my affection."
The crayon portrait of the late Professor Morse, exhibited at Vienna by Mr. Kurtz, has been purchased by the editorial staff of the Neue Freie Presse of that city. The same gentlemen have also purchased the picture of Lafayette painted by Professor Morse before he had turned his attention from art to the electric telegraph. They have also requested a gentleman of this city to send them portraits of Henry J. Raymond, Horace Greeley, and James Gordon Bennett, Sen., to add to their gallery of the editorial celebrities of all nations.
Concerns will be without many of those who for some years past have been conspicuous before the country. In the House, on the Democratic side, we shall miss James B. Beck, of Kentucky, and Clarkson N. Potter, of New York (one of the ablest men who have served on the Judiciary Committee), S. S. Marshall, of Illinois, and Judge Niblack, of Indiana. Of the Republicans there will be absent Gen. B. F. Butler, Judge Hoar, Robert S. Hale, Gen. Joseph E. Hawley, Horace Maynard, and Wilson of Indiana. It seems to be admitted that the Republic can leadership will be in the hands of ex-Speaker Blaine, who has the highest possible qualifications for the position.
The corner-stone of the monument which the Presbyterians of the United States will erect, as a Centennial offering, to the memory of the Rev. Dr. John Witherspoon, was laid in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, Nov. 18th. The address was delivered by the Rev. Dr. Win Adams, of this city, and was an eloquent word which is taken in Nejd by halterropes, the real guidance of the animal being almost wholly effected by the pressure of the rider's leg and knee. Shoes too, are of rare occurrence, nor are they needed in the light sand-mixed soil of the central provinces; on the other hand, the boots are often rubbed with grease, to counteract the drying effects of the heated ground. Of all niceties of grooming, docking and clipping excepted, the Arabs are masters; and their natural kindness to animals—a quality which they share with most Orientals, together with the care every reasonable man bestows on a valuable article of property—insures to an Arab horse good treatment at the hands of its owner. But Arab horses do not commonly entail tents, nor play with women and children, nor in a general way, do they share the family meals, nor are they habitually kissed and cried over, as the imagination or credulity of some narrator has suggested. An Arab flying for life has indeed, been known to give the only morsel of bread about him to his horse rather than eat it himself—an act in which self-preservation had as large a share as affection. Lastly, the standing prohibition of horse selling from Nejd has really nothing more romantic in it than narrow-minded application of the principles of protective monopoly; in other cases, reluctance to conclude a bargain simply indicates that the offer made was insufficient.
Bright Prospects—The Country Growing Rich.
There has probably never before been a time when this country was growing rich so fast as at present. People generally do not realize this. They think the hard times indicate that the country is growing poor. This is not so. The hard times produce economy. They compel retrenchment of expenses. At first, it is true, they somewhat derange business, and throw many persons out of employment. But in a little while they force industry as well as economy. The great mass of the people cannot long be idle. They would starve. So the whole country goes to work—goes to producing. And the productive power of this country, in a period of universal industry, is enormous.
We say we are growing rich faster today than ever before. Why! Because our population is larger, we are now all at work, at the same time spending much less money than usual, while the progress of invention has rendered our industry more productive, and the resources of the country are so developed as to yield a larger product than at any former period.
It is impossible for the reasons which we have thus briefly but comprehensively stated, for a depression of business to continue long here. Times no sooner get very bad than they begin to mend. The country is growing rich to-day with unprecedented rapidity, and there are bright prospects ahead.
During the war, when the currency was rapidly depreciating, and our expenditures reached a fabulous sum, the unreflective erroneously supposed we were getting rich whereas in reality we were growing poorer every day. Now they think we are growing poorer when, in fact, we were never before accumulating so rapidly. We have no occasion therefore for despondency, but the most substantial of which is taken in Nejd by halterropes, the real guidance of the animal being almost wholly effected by the pressure of the rider's leg and knee. Shops too, are of rare occurrence, nor are they needed in the light sand-mixed soil of the central provinces; on the other hand, the boots are often rubbed with grease, to counteract the drying effects of the heated ground. Dr. John Witherspoon, was laid in Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, Nov. 16th. The address was delivered by the Rev. Dr. Wm. Adams, of this city, and was an eloquent exposition of the characteristics of Scotch Presbyterianism. In looking forward to the future, Dr. Adams said: "Should the time ever come when civil government—national State, or municipal—shall presume to lend itself to what is sectarian, fumbling about our schools and churches, these foundations of our public; should the old, old question of religious liberty be revived in any form; then shall we see the use and value of that particular element of our nationality which we this day commemorate—an element toughened and disciplined by the sufferings of ages; then you may be sure the old blue flag of Scotch Presbyterianism—a flag that was never trailed in the dust before tyranny or superstition—will be in the very front of the fight."
PORTRY AND RELEASON. — When the blood flows quickly and hotly there must be poetry and music. Nothing else will answer the demand. Poems is only a dray home, while poetry is a stead that can go like the wind. Poems done for calm hours, but there must be poetry for the battle change and the hour of victory or supreme concern. This has been the case ever since human history began, and will be until its end. Who can nicken up the aid which poetry has rendered religion, as the subject for its communion? The ardent of a good lyric has penned to millions. Haber's "Greenlandia Jay Mountain" has done more great to the world than a hundred rich residents, as his in the Rape, or his "Tennessee in India," or his fine edition of Jeremy Higley. The missionary always carries his hymnology with him. He mainly goes with his sermon. It is a remarkable fact that new Christian countries have no sweet sympathy. Silvesterburgh in half-heart of Albion," describes the rude tribes among which he lived, as utterly devoid of melody.
THE POWER OF SLEEP. — Some of the great Generals whose names are familiar to us have had a wonderful power of sleeping, for a few moments, away on the battle-field. The Duke of Wellington, just before the attack on St. Sebastian, in Spain, found that the breathing batteries would not be ready to open the attack for two hours.
"The best thing we can do," he said, "is to sleep," and slipping off his horse into a trench, he was asleep in an instant.
Napoleon at the very crisis of the important battle of Wagram, ordered up his reserve, which he never did except in great emergencies. Confident that the movement would be carried out, and would ensure the victory, he ordered his headkin to be spread on the ground, and in a moment he wets in a deep sleep. He slept for twenty minutes, and his staff began to be alarmed; but, waking, he insisted further orders without asking any questions, as if he had not slept. Onside, the great French General, had a similar power of sleeping for a few moments before and during great battles.

AN AGENT WANTED
In every town in the country, feed circulars
WHEAT—There has been a large falling off in receipts, the late storms having interrupted transportation. The market here quiet, with large offerings, the bulk of which is either damaged or of inferior quality; choice is scarce and meets ready sale at the extreme of our quotations. Prices at the Liverpool wheat market are without change during the week. The latest Liverpool quotations are for average 100@11a 1d; Club 12@24a 13d. Our present market quotations are as follows: Choice milling, $1.95@$3.00; fair to good export grades, $1.87%@$1.95; damaged and inferior at less rates.
FLOUR—The demand continues good. Prices are steady and firm at our quotations. Sales for export have been moderate, but the home demand continues active, and all the mills are quite busy. We quote country brands of superfine as selling within the range of $45@$50; standard brands, $47@$50; extra superfine, $45@$50. Extra familyly is jobbing at $60@$90.
BARLEY—Receipts during the week have been light, but the stock on hand being in excess of demand, price though unchanged are weak. Coast Brewing is held at $15@$140; Chevallier, choice, $16@$175 per cent.
GATS—Feed is in moderate demand at $175@$190. Choice qualities for milling purposes are scarce and readily bring $190@$200 per cent.
RYE—Receipts are moderate, while the demand is improving steadily with an upward tendency in rates. The range of prices for the week have been $14.75%@$15.56 she latter an extreme rate for extra choice.
CORN—Receipts have fallen off, and the demand lessening, prices have shaded off. The present range is $125@$175—the latter for prime Yellow.
BRAN and MIDDLINGS—The mill prices continue steady at $25.00 for bran and $27.50@$30.00 ton for middlings. The demand is good.
HAY—Receipts have fallen off largely of late and prices are firm at our quotations. Choice wheat is now selling at $18.00@$20.00 per ton. The range of prices for all other kinds is from $15.00 per ton upwards.
STRAW—A good article is saleable at 70@75c ¥ bale.
BEANS—The supply is large; general quality good; demand fair at low rates. Lots from Wharf are quotable as follows: Bayon, 2½¢/c; White, 1¼¢/c; Peas, 1½¢/c; Pink and Red, 1¼¢/c; Large Butter, 2½¢/c; small do, 2½¢/c; B. Castor beans are in request. The mills are paying for all clean lots.
SEEDS—There is a good demand for all the varieties, and prices are firm at our quotations. We quote: Flax, p. 8, 3½¢/c; Mustard, white, 2½¢/c; Mustard, Brown, 2¢/c; Canary, white, 2½¢/c; Mustard, Brown, 2¢/c; Alfalfa, 13½¢/c.
HOPPS—The bulk of the crop is marketed. The yield is said to be quite large and general quality above the average. The present demand is extremely light and prices remarkably low, although an improvement is looked for, as the crops in England are reported light, failing largely short of the requirement. The price as quoted new is nominal at 15½c ¥ b. Extra choice held at 20½c ¥ b.
We have but few transactions to record.
BEESWAX—Receipts are moderate, with a fair demand. We note sales at 27½c ¥ choice is quotable at 38c jobsbing.
POTATOES—Receipts for the week have been large, but as the demand is unusually active, prices have advanced. The present range is $85@$37¢ for Potahmas, $145@$150 for Humboldt, $160@$165 for choice Salt Lake, with free arrivals of the latter within the past week. Inferior sell within the range of $100@$125. We have a light supply of sweets selling at $80@$75 ¥ 100 lb.
ONIONS—Receipts are moderate, but as the demand is light prices have declined. Silverkins now command 90c @$125 as to quality and condition.

Dear Str—It gives me much pleasure to add my testimony to the "great cloud of witnesses" who speak in unmeasured terms of the Celebrated Eclipse Windmill. Mine is a 10-foot wheel, has been running nearly a year, and gives great satisfaction. It is just the thing for the farm and the yard, and for furnishing water for the buildings.
Yours truly,
