Kleinigkeiten, From Saturday's Daily: —A social party was given at Enterprise Hall last night. —Mr. Spurgeon has just erected a fine wind-mill at his store in Santa Ana. —A serenading party, from Los Angeles, visited Mr. Tyler's residence last evening. They had a very pleasant time. —Mr. E. E. Hewitt came to town last evening from Los Angeles. He returned by special train. —A large and elegant dinner party was given yesterday by Don Francisco Escanillo, in commemoration of his birth-day. —The artesian well at J. M. Gibson's farm, near Anaheim, is now down 382 feet and in a strata of white sand. It is believed that water is near at hand. —Mr. White, agent of the Pacific Mutual Insurance Company, of San Francisco, is in town to-day. We recommend him as a gentleman and as a representative of a good Company. —In the suit of Lock vs. Nebelung, before Judge Clark yesterday, judgment was rendered in favor of plaintiff for the sum of $118 64 and costs. A decision in the case of Mitchell vs. Nebelung will be rendered to-day. —On Thursday night a fire was discovered in the brick store of W. B. Greenberg, on Allso street, Los Angeles, and although the entire Fire Department was promptly on hand, it was found impossible to dognaught but confine the flames to the building in which they originated. Greenberg's loss amounts to about $7,000. —He had been in Los Angeles for a few days, and when he got back he put a few reflections on paper and sent them to the Gazette. Hear him: —Catch 'em all alive kill'em when bridge, at the Bay State Ranch, during the storm last week, than during the flood of 1861-2. Donald McKay's troupe of Warm Spring Indians, thirteen in number, who figured so conspicuously in the Modoc war a year or so since, passed through Sacramento, Saturday morning, from Washington to Oregon. The waters of Chico Creek are overflowing the Bidwell ranch in the vicinity of the Big Bend of the Sacramento, and necessitating the transfer of live stock to higher ground. A Mexican sheep-herder was smothered to death last week near Hollister, on the ranch of Dunn & Donnelly, through a haystack falling upon him, about which he had been sleeping. John Freeman, an old resident of San Mateo, and Auditor of that county, died in Santa Cruz last week. Deceased was an officer in Colonel Bulkeley's expedition for building a telegraph line to Russia, via Behring Straits. The Governor on Friday appointed J. S. Capps a Notary Public for Lake County, to reside at Genoa, vice Oliver; also L. B. Withall a Notary Publio for Stanislaws County, to reside at Modesto, vice himself. The Trinity Journal says: "Miners throughout the county are now washing with a full supply of water. Most of them will do more work before Christmas this year than was done the whole of last year. The Governor has issued commissions to all the County Judges elect. On the summit between Truckee and the Sierra Valley, there is now eighteen inches of snow. A young man named Edward Keller committed suicide at Parkinson's ranch, San Mateo County, a few days ago. Patrick Laird, of Pleasant Hill, Lane county, Oregon, raised a Chester white hog, which weighed 777 pounds net when killed at two years old. "I was once in the service of the United States," writes a man from Portland, Oregon, to the Secretary of War, "but now I am in the service of my God. Enclosed find Post Office money order for $40, which belongs to the Government of the United States." The citizens in the vicinity of Granerville, Tulare County, held a meeting on the 20th Inst., at which resolutions were adopted memorializing the State legislature to take steps in the settlement of the railroad lands in that section. Thomas Callowy, County Clerk of Butte County, has commenced an action for libel against C. L. Stilson, H. Arents, B. F. Allen; A. F. Blood and G. W. Dorn, laying his damages at $10,000. The alleged libel grows out of the late County seat contest. The Virginia City Enterprise says: "The erection of new buildings is in order not only throughout the burnt district, but also in other and unangled portions of the city. Quite a number of new frame structures of creditable size and style of finish are being put..." He had been in Los Angeles for a few days, and when he got back he put a few reflections on paper and sent them to the Gazette. Hear him: "Catch 'em all alive, kill 'em when you want 'em," used to be the street ary of a vendor of gummed paper for catching files. Now we don't want 'em" at all; nevertheless, since by microscopical observation they have been discovered to be savengers of the air, purifying it of animalcules which adhere to their wings as they pass through it, and which they rub off with their legs and devour, (not much unlike what we have seen the Digger squaws do in scraping from their bare legs and fast the acorn-mush which spattered there while pounding the acorns, and putting it carefully back. In the mess they were preparing for their lordly backs), we say, mind we have known this interesting fact, we have a slightly less antiquity to their partinacious familiarity while trying to get a brief noon-day nap, or enjoy a quiet reading of the Daily Gazette. Concerning them as a diet, however, tastes differ. We do think, though, that the mode adopted by so many of the hotel and restaurant quots in Los Angeles, of serving them as a sauce indiscriminalaly, and in galvies particularly, is one of those cases in which it is possible to have too much of a good thing, and tend rather to cloying the appetite, than increasing it. Would it not be better—just for a change, you know—to prepare them as a side dish—ophilobably safe—and suitable for instance, and try it on that line, if it takes all winter. Thomas Callow, County Clerk of Butte County, has commenced an action for libel against C. L. Stilson, H. Arents, B. F. Allen; A. F. Blood and G. W. Dorn, laying his damages at $10,000. The alleged libel grows out of the late County seat contest. The Virginia City Enterprise says: "The erection of new buildings is in order not only throughout the burnt district, but also in other and unsinged portions of the city. Quite a number of new frame structures of creditable size and style of finish are being put up on South C street and elsewhere in the southern part of the town." W. J. Young was, until recently, the fortunate owner of 3,800 fat mutton sheep, with fleece still on, that were being herded near the Stanislaus river. During one of the dark nights of last week the herder was taken slick and the flock broke away, and in attempting to enter the bottom near Burneyville they got into the Stanislaus river and were carried away, causing a total loss. A large force of men are at work, however, trying to save the pelts. The German colony at Aurora, Oregon, manufacture flour, lumber, cloth, leather, wagons, plows, harness and maddles, boots and shoes, clothes, furniture, split and rawhide chaffra, tinware, woodenware, barrels, iron work, make cider, sauerkraut, apple butter, pear butter, butter from milk, jellies etc., run the railroad dining-room and hotel, drug store, store of general merchandise, Post Office, telegraph office, raise immense quantities of chickens, keep hogs, cattle and sheep and horses for the colony. The Placer Herald, referring to the case submitted by Leland Stanford to J. B. Felton and Judge Sanderson, of the right of the Legislature to regulate freights and fares, and their opinion therein, has the following: "If the Legislature will but pass a just and equitable law regulating fares and freights on railroads of California, we will take the chances of its standing the Constitutional test. And if the Railroad Company meant fairness, they would be willing to take the chances. But they don't. They are afraid to risk the passage of such a law; and therefore attempt to forewalt the interpretation of the law by the Courts, by opinions of their hired attorneys." Send it East.
