In consequence of the hard times in Virginia City since the fire, some philanthropists are running two-bit fare games. It is said that the number of goose and ducks about Tulare and other lakes in the southern part of San Joaquin Valley is perfectly marvelous. A son of John Roberts, of Coulterville, aged three years, inhaled hot smoke at a fire that occurred in that town on the 18th instant, which caused death. Three of the prisoners who escaped from the Fresno County Jail last week, have been caught and are again in prison. The prisoners captured are the two Mexicans, Billa and Faries, and Horton. According to the Solano Times, one of the business men in Vallejo washed to discharge some hands from his employ recently, but before so doing he had the heads of all his men examined by a spiritualist, so as to determine which were the best men to be retained. A ball was given in Tucson recently to raise funds for the building of a school house. It netted fifteen hundred and eighty dollars. On Saturday last, at Hill's Ferry, G. Talich and Charles P. Harris crossed the San Joaquin river in a boat, taking along with them guns for the purpose of hunting. While Mr. Talich was in the act of pulling the gun out of the boat the charge in the weapon accidentally exploded and the shot entered his body, resulting in death two hours afterwards. The Colusa Sun wants a trespass law for that county. The Trustees of Nevada City have fixed the rate of taxation there at 60 cents on the $100. There was a stabbing affray at Gilroy on Thursday between two boys 15 years of age, one known as James Klerran and the other Nett Gardner. The former did the stabbing and is in custody. Chase and lady arrived by train last night. —Jose Maria Porta had his foot cut off by the Spadra train, on Thursday. —The Water Company has men at work tearing away the ruins of the old adobe on Centre street. —There will be about one hundred squatters on the Lomas de Santiago to contest the title of that ranch. —a load of lobsters from Laguna Cañon, on the San Joaquin rancho, were brought into town yesterday. —the condition of Mr. Hunter is steadily improving, His mind is, however, considerably disordered. —Three bands of sheep passed the Paredes house yesterday, on their way to the foot hills. —the grass in the foot hills near Anaheim is in many places three inches high. —Under Sheriff Mitchell was busy yesterday serving papers on the squatters on the Lomas de Santiago ranch. The Colusa Sun wants a trespass law for that county. The Trustees of Nevada City have fixed the rate of taxation there at 60 cents on the $100. There was a stabbing affray at Gilroy on Thursday between two boys 15 years of age, one known as James Klerran and the other Nett Gardiner. The former did the stabbing and is in custody. The flood in the Truckee river after the recent storms did a great amount of damage at Verdl. J. P. Fould's boom, containing 500,000 feet of logs, and 500 cords of wood, and his dam, were carried down the stream. The Colusa Sun says: The Legislature ought to give to some one authority for cutting across bends of the river. There are many places where it would be of great advantage to the land and to navigation to cut through bend. The Commissioners appointed to prepare an irrigation bill for the west side of the San Joaquin river are appealing to the farmers for subscriptions to enable them to carry on the canvass to insure the passage of the Act. The Mendocino Star is out vigorously advocating a division of that county. The Star claims that the people of the county are almost universally in favor of a new county. They have a debating society in Pope Valley, Napa county, which has been wrestling with the weighty question, "Which is foreman—husband or wife?" We do not hear whether the ladies are admitted to the debate or the final vote on the question. The Vallejo Chronicle man has been interviewing Luttrell. That paper of Saturday states: Mr. Luttrell is unpledged and uncommitted on the Speakership question. It is thought, however, that he would be pleased to see S. S. Cox elected to the position of Speaker, believing him every way qualified for the duty. Mr. Luttrell says the statement made in the newspapers that Congressman Wigginton had pledged himself to vote for Mr. Kerr, for Speaker, was not true. But whoever Mr. Luttrell votes for, he says must be a man for hard money. The storm of last week caused a bad break in the San Joaquin Valley Railroad between Merced and Atwater stations. The Merced Argus states that it will take a week to repair the road. The extreme high tide of Saturday last caused a break in the Sherman Island levee at Shaw's Ranch, on the Sacramento side. A gang of Chinamen were employed to repair damages, but it would seem that great watchfulness and much labor will be required to protect the lower end of the island from flooding. The late high water broke the levee at the lower end of Rough and Ready Island, San Joaquin county, and a large portion of the made land is now several feet under water. This is the One and one-fourth inches of rain fell on the 24th inst. The total rainfall during the month is three and one-half inches. The following were the shipments from the depot yesterday: 1 barrel wine, 2 pipes wine, 58 sacks barley, weighing 8,049 lb., 1 box merchandise. Positions in Langenberger's store are in request by all the young men in town, as the situation seems peculiarly favorably to matrimony. Mr. Louis Wartenberg returned yesterday from the coal mine in Santiago. The balance of the party have commenced sinking a shaft on their claim. A well-known citizen of Anaheim, temporarily sojourning in San Diego, sends us a satirical letter from that place, which we publish to-day. It will repay a careful perusal. An action was brought in Justice Clark's Court yesterday by Mrs. Alice Higgins and others to stop the payment of money belonging to Guadalupe Rais until he shall settle his just and honest debts. The hurdle race at Agricultural Park on Thanksgiving Day was such a success that it will be repeated on Monday. The success of the race consisted in the horses failing to clear a hurdle three feet high. The remains of John W. Marsh were interred yesterday morning. After the funeral was over a dispatch was received from the friends of the deceased, ordering the body to be sent to Boston. The grave was opened and the remains taken to the depot in the afternoon and shipped by express to Boston, Mass. A carload of raisins, cured at Polson this season, were Wednesday forwarded to the East. This is the first overflow that has occurred on this island since the flood of 1862. The water in the San Joaquin river is falling slowly, and unless another rain storm occurs shortly in the mountains, the water will probably not remain long enough on the land to kill garden plants. Volunteer grain is four inches high at Lompoc. The San Francisco Post has just changed hands. Joseph T. Goodman, formerly of the Virginia Enterprise, becomes its present business manager and editor, in place of Henry George who has hitherto been its editor in chief. WASHINGTON, Nov. 28. Several prominent Collectors of Customs, including those from New York and Philadelphia, were at the Treasury Department yesterday to protest against the recent reduction of force ordered by the Secretary of the Treasury to be made in their respective districts. Many other collectors have protested by letter; but as the appropriation made by Congress to deny the expenses of collecting the customs revenue will not admit of the employment of a full force at any of the Custom Houses, the order, no doubt will have to be adhered to. Most of the objections to this order, like the objections made to the order consolidating the Internal Revenue Districts, are based upon political grounds. We received a letter yesterday from an old Anaheim resident, Mr. Ned Polhemus. He is pleasantly situated at Seattle, Washington Territory, which he says will soon be a far-midable rival of San Francisco in wealth and population. Send it East.
