Kewen and Stephen M. White have formed a law partnership. —The November term of the District Court will begin on Monday. —The installation of the officers of Anaheim Lodge, I. O. G. T., will take place on next Friday night. —The Gibson well has reached the depth of 257 feet with a good prospect of water. —The new lodge of Odd Fellows at Santa Ana, will be instituted this afternoon. —In an affray at Downey City on Sunday, John See received a slight knife wound from John C. Brown. —The affairs of the late Adam Hill will probably be placed in the hands of a Board of Trustees, who will continue the business. —Mr. Smith, agent for Wells, Fargo & Co., has been busy collecting funds for the relief of the Virginia City sufferers. —The trustees of the Presbyterian Church desire to procure a janitor to take charge of the Church and grounds. —The citizens of San Bernardino have formed a joint stock company to build a large hotel. Mr. Foster, manager of Standefer's stables at Downey City, was accidentally shot in the hand by the premature discharge of a pistol. Two hundred and forty acres of land have been bought in this vicinity by employees of the S. P. R. R. since the establishment of the Anaheim Branch. John Goedell has sold $160 worth of castor beans, the product of three acres, and has yet enough beans to realize $50 more. The stalks were so tall that he found it necessary to cut them down to get at the beans. Mr. Goedell is a very successful farmer. Mr. Theo. Lynill, the popular manager of the Planters' Hotel, retires from the duties of host on Monday next. We are glad to learn, however, that he will continue to be a resident of Anaheim, and that it is probable that his future profession will not be entirely unconnected with law. Mr. Spiker, of Los Angeles, has raised and cured a quantity of Connecticut leaf tobacco, which he says he can sell in Los Angeles for forty cents per pound, for manufacturing purposes. Mr. S. claims to be an expert in raising and curing tobacco, and is willing to impart to farmers all the information of which he is possessed. Messrs. Bennett & Page have sold their interest in the Planters' Hotel to the Messrs. Arthur Heimann and H. L. St. John. As the former is a long-time resident of Anaheim, and the latter a professor of the "art preservative" we feel a two-fold interest in the success of the new firm, and ask for them a continuation of the liberal patronage which has heretofore been bestowed upon the hotel. They will take formal possession on next Monday, November 1st. The "Merchant of Venice" will be performed to-night at Enterprise Hall. The Downey Courier thus speaks of the performance: A large and enthusiastic audience greeted Mr. Frank Perkins, on Saturday night last, at the Central Hotel, on the occasion of the reading, in character, of Shakespeare's great play of "The Merchant of Venice." The rendition was most excellent, and elicited repeated applause. Mr. Perkins is evidently at home in this piece, having thoroughly studied and perfected himself in it. The reading was followed by a "Centennial Shadow Poem," written by Mr. Perkins, which to be appreciated must be heard. Its beauty and sublimity take the audience by storm. At a regular meeting of Minnecha Lodge, No. 153, Downey City, held on Tuesday evening last, the following officers were elected: W. C. T., B. W. Tarwater; W. V. T., Nannie Wear; W. S., John Barnett; W. F. S., Chas Fisher; W. T., Joe Moores; W. M., L. Ardis; W. I. G., Sue Wolf; W. O. G., J. R. Kouna. A coal yard is being established in Santa Monica, by a San Francisco firm. They have already received 600 or 700 tons of coal, and intend to keep a good supply, if they meet with the necessary patronage. A tract of land in East Los Angeles has been donated to Mr. Hamilton, who proposes to erect a building in which to manufacture artificial stone from sand. Anaheim Lodge No. 181, L.O.G.T.
