Anaheim Gazette SATURDAY ... OCT. 16, 1875 Kleinigkeiten. From Saturday's Daily. —Gold opened and closed in New York this morning at 118¾. —Mitchell has been white-washing and fixing up his stable, and it now smells as sweet and clean as a parlor. —The timber for the bridge across the Santa Ana river was forwarded by teams this morning. —In the civil case of Silver vs. Hill, in Judge Clark's court, judgment was rendered for plaintiff for $20. —The demand for Crowther's wagons and buggies continues unabated. He can scarcely procure the lumber and iron fast enough to satisfy his customers. —Mrs. Mary Clark, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Caswell, of Los Angeles, died on Wednesday at Norwich, Conn., from the effect of injuries received by being thrown from a carriage. —The Baptist Church of Downey City, at their last business meeting, without a dissenting vote, elected Rev. J. B. Tombes, D. D., as their pastor. Dr. Tombes is a brother-in-law of W. M. McFadden, and resides on his farm about four miles from Anaheim. —The painting of "Elaine," by Ignacio Covarrubias, is nearly finished. The picture will be placed on exhibition in a few days, and an attempt will be made to dispose of it by a raffle. The picture is a fine effort and will be an adornment to the walls of any parlor. —We made a visit this morning to the painting establishment of Mr. J. Over the cable and under the sea. News of the laid ones is waft'd to me; News of the house on the air-stretching plains Where the wind-mills of Holland look out on the main. News of the mother and gray-headed sir, Smoking their evening pipe by the fire; News of the brothers and sisters no dear—Thoughtless of time in the youth's hearty cheer. Over the cable and under the sea. News of the loved ones is waft'd to me; News of the one who is dearer than life— News of the one I would fain call my wife Golden-haird Gretchen—the queen of my life. Gretchen ah Gretchen oh when shall we meet? When shall the dream of my life be complete? When shall I press the again to my heart? Never while life last, to borrow or to part. Over the cable and under the sea, Throbs with a boat that is mournful to me—Wail of the lost in its desolate tone; Gretchen, oh Gretchen, my darling, mine own. Over the cable and under the sea, Never again said be wafted to me Message of her whom thy life had been given; Brightly her eyes beam—the night-stars of heaven. Brightly she waiteth where death cometh not; Patient in love she hast never forget; Pure be thy footsteps and gallicest thy heart, Then shalt join her at last where the good never part. Charles A. Gardner. Insane and Bankrupt. On the 28th of July last, M. Frankel, a resident of Los Angeles county, filed a petition in bankruptcy, which stated that he was unable to pay his debts, but that he was willing to surrender all his estate and effects for the benefit of his creditors. On the fourth of September, the District United States Court appointed Michael H. Meyers assignee of his estate, and all the bankrupt's property was transferred to him. This was subsequently sold by the assignee at a private sale, realizing the sum of $9,700. Yesterday J. H. Steinhart filed a petition to have these proceedings vacated. The petitioner sets forth that when Frankel filed his petition, and for a long time previously, he was of unsound mind, and incapable of managing his business affairs, that when he filed the petition he had not sufficient intelligence about his affairs to know whether he was a bankrupt or not; nor did he know what the petition contained, or for what purpose it was filed. Steinhart avers that Frankel was not a bankrupt and that the property Dr. Tombes is a brother-in-law of W. M. McFadden, and resides on his farm about four miles from Anaheim. The painting of "Elaine," by Ignacio Covarrubias, is nearly finished. The picture will be placed on exhibition in a few days, and an attempt will be made to dispose of it by a raffle. The picture is a fine effort and will be an adornment to the walls of any parlor. We made a visit this morning to the painting establishment of Mr. J. H. Gooch. It is in the building erected by Mr. A. Hill on Lemon street. We consider it one of the best establishments of that character in Southern California, and nothing but good work can manatee therefrom. Imigration is commencing to arrive. Every house is rented before it is finished or vacated. Most of the new-comers being permanent residents it is safe to estimate that the population of Los Angeles will be 20,000 before six months.—Herald. "We learn with unaffected regret of the death of our friend Robert Ashcroft, of the Boca de la Playa ranch, near San Juan Capistrano. Mr. Ashcroft was a brother-in-law of Don Juan Forster and a very worthy man." The above item from the Express is slightly incorrect. 1. It was Mrs. Robert Ashcroft that died. 2. Ashcroft is not a brother-in-law of Don Juan Forster. Mr. Parker brought in for our inspection some specimens of his raisins. We can add nothing to our former testimony concerning them. They are of nicer flavor than the imported raisin, and we see no cause why they should not supercede them in the market. Mr. P. has dried about a ton this season. Next year, however, he intends to perfect his drying arrangements, sand will embark in the business on a large scale. Those who advertise in the Gazette seem peculiarly fortunate in obtaining the point which they seek by so doing. A lady lost her shawl; she advertised, and on the morrow the shawl came. Mr. Ramage loses his horse and, through the medium of the Gazette, on the next day the horse is found. And now comes Mr. Luedke, rejoicing over the possession of his lost seal, advertised two days ago. Anaheim Lodge of Good Templars will give a Festival on Thursday evening, October 28th, at Enterprise Hall. The programme will be decided upon and published in a few days. There is now on exhibition at Luedke's jewelry store two rings and a jacket which will be given away on the night of the Festival. One of the rings will be placed in a cake; the other will be presented to the most handsome lady present. This question will be determined by a vote of the audience. The jacket will be presented to the homelest man. There is no doubt of the Festival being a great success, socially and peculiarly. A Judge in the prisoners' box is not a common sight, and, in justice to human nature, deserves to be noticed. The phenomenon has occurred at Nice, where one Antoine Orenzo, a merchant, and Judge of the Tribunal of Commerce, has been charged, with others, with wholesale smuggling. For years past the Custom House officers have been surprised at the great increase of smuggling on the Italian frontier, but all their attempts to discover the guilty parties failed till recently, when they found, to their astonishment, that, like the brigands of Greece, their accomplices lived in their midst, and were supposed to be all honorable men. A trap was laid, and Judge Orenzo and his worthy comrades fell into it. They were all sentenced to a year's imprisonment and fined, and goods, consisting chiefly of peppers and spices, to the value of several thousand pounds, found on their premises, were confiscated as smuggled property. Consignments Sollicited And inquiries promptly attended to. E. N. McDonald, Manager. LYON'S KATHAIron 50 cents per Bottle. Has been in use over half a century. It promotes the growth, preserves the color. Increases the vigor and beauty of the hair, prevents it falling out and turning gray. YOUNG MEN Who may be suffering from the effect of youthful follicles or indiscretion, will do well to avail themselves of this, the greatest boon ever laid at the altar of suffering humanity. Dr. SPINNEY will guarantee to forfeit $300 for every case of seminal weakness or private disease of any kind or character which he undertakes and falls to cure. He would therefore say to the unfortunate sufferer who may read this notice, that you are treading upon dangerous ground when you longer delay in seeking the proper remedy for your complaint. You may be in the first stage; remember you are apprising the last. If you are bordering upon the last, and are suffering some or all of its effects, remember that if you persist in procrastination, the time must come when the most skilful physician can render you no assistance; when the door of hope will be closed against you; when a no angel of mercy can bring you relief. In no case has the Doctor failed of success. Then let not d spair work upon your imagination, but avail yourself of the beneficial results of his treatment before your case is by your side the reach of medical skill, or before grim death hurries you to a premature grave.
