Nixon has resigned his position of night-watchman. —Fourteen persons were baptised by Rev. Mr. Hand at Downey on last Sunday. —First-class stereoscopes and stereoscopic views of Southern California for sale by A. G. Beebe. —Mr. Errington arrived on the stage from San Diego last evening, and proceeded at once to Los Angeles. —We had the pleasure to-day of meeting Mr. John Bach, manager of the Anaheim Wine Growers' Association. —In the case of Planigan vs. Hurley, tried in Judge Bailey's court today, judgment was rendered for the plaintiff for $14. —A lump of honey eight feet square and weighing five hundred pounds was taken from the roof of the U. S. Hotel, in Los Angeles, yesterday. —We direct attention to the card of M. L. Wicks, Esq., which appears to-day in our advertising columns. Mr. Wicks is a lawyer of merit and we are pleased that he has decided to become a permanent resident of Anaheim. The publication of the Wilmington Enterprise has ceased. The editor will remove with his material to Santa Monica, and not later than October 20th, the "Santa Monica Outlook" will make its first appearance. erable astonishment, which was, perhaps, materially increased by a couple of smarting blows delivered rapidly in the German's face. When he reached Kearney street his hat was indeed a wreck, and the man went home perfectly disgusted with Herrmann's diabolique. The stagnation of trade has been severely felt by all business men, and even that enterprising class of fellow creatures known as "Drummers," or traveling salesmen, despite their almost inexhaustible invention and resources, have been obliged occasionally to yield to the pressure of the times. One of those gentlemen, who has recently returned from a trip for Thistle Bros. & Co., of Boston, did not show a very large exhibition of orders to balance the liberal expense account allowed him by the firm, and Mr. Thistle, after looking over his return, said: “Mr. Rataplan, I am afraid you do not approach the dealer in the right way. I used to be very successful in this line. Now just suppose me to be Mr. Bigger of Sellout, Ill., and show me the way you introduce the house.” Accordingly Rataplan stepped out of the counting room, and returned, hat in hand, inquiring: “Is Mr. Bigger in?” “That’s my name,” said Mr. Thistle, urbanely. My name is Rataplan, sir; I represent the house of Thistle Bros. & Co., of Boston. A gentleman recently arrived from Virginia, who has had large experience in tobacco culture in that State, informs the Downey Courier that he is desirous of establishing a tobacco manufactory. He pronounces the tobacco grown near Downey to be a very superior article. At Santa Monica last evening the stage team became frightened at the locomotive and ran away. It collided with a telegraph pole, and Sam Harper, the driver, and William Geller, Jr., son of Dr. William Geller, of El Monte, were thrown out. The driver was not much hurt, but Geller, it is feared, is fatally injured. It ought to be more extensively known that a very superior article of champagne is made by the Anaheim Wine Growers' Association. This effervescent drink is of a beautiful color and exceedingly pleasing to the taste, and we have the authority of a connoisseur that it does not possess the "headachy" qualities of other brands of champagnes. They got into a row, and the smallest Celestial got licked. He accepted the situation and forgave his antagonist, but had Sin Si Wau arrested for blocking the door of the room where the battle was fought, thus rendering futile his attempts to get away. And that is all we know about it, for the case is now being adjudicated in Judge Bailey's court. We paid a visit this morning to the studio of the Spanish artist who is now engaged in painting a copy of Toby Rosenthal's "Elaine." We found the picture in an advanced stage of completion, and to our unpracticed eye the execution seemed to be marvellous—at least for the production of a self-taught artist. We predict for the young artist a name in the galaxy of painters, if he is fortunate enough to fall under the protection of some one who will appreciate his talent and assist in its development. For I’ve had two drummers to one customer in my store for the last two months, and if I could get hold of one of the blasted fools that sent ’em out at this time, I’m darned if I wouldn’t boot him clean out of the town of Sellout." "That’ll do, Mr. Rataplan," said Thistle. "I have no doubt you did the best you could for the interest of the house. Trade is a little dull." THE CRIME OF "BURKING." On the 29th of November, 1827, an old man by the name of Donald died in West Port, one of the purlious of Edinburgh. He lodged with a man named William Hare, and died owing him four pounds. His ereditor saw of but one way of reimbursing himself, and that was by disposing of the old man’s body to the doctors. Hare found a ready accomplice in William Burke, another man, and also one of his lodgers. The body was removed from the coffin, and a bag of tanner’s bark substituted for it. The lid was serewed down and the little funeral went off as usual. The same evening, Hare and Burke stealthily repaired to the university, and meeting a student in the me way you introduce the house. Last night the wonderful Herrmann introduced a little pugilistic novelty into his performance not supposed to be incorporated in the bill. When the time came to perform the last trick the prestidigitator stepped down into the audience and politely negotiated the loan of a hat. A German sitting in the orchestra circle smilingly handed the Professor of Magic his new beaver tile. No sooner had the slight-of-hand performer secured the beaver than he fell down upon it as if by accident, and apparently smashed it all up until it looked as if Uncle James Laidley had sat upon it. A ROUSED TEUTON. Immediately the owner of the hat sprang, terribly excited, and began to expostulate. Herrmann kept up the delusion by tearing the hat all to pieces and throwing it about the stage. Here the rage of the excitable Teuton knew no bounds, and springing angriily to his feet he began to cane the legerdemain professor in very lively style. Herrmann, considerably excited, sprang upon the stage demanded that the man who couldn't appreciate a joke should be ejected. Cries of "Put him out!" rose from all sides, and the audience was terribly excited. Suddenly Herrmann, drawing a pistol, aimed it at his opponent. Here the wildest confusion prevailed, everybody in the vicinity starting up from their seats and rushing to get out of the way. There was A FLASH AND REPORT, And the next instant the startled audience saw the German's hat fall upon the stage as good as ever. Herrmann took the hat, presented it to the man who had laid the cane over his shoulders, and it was received with consid- Households gathered their members within doors before dusk; workmen walked home from their day's toll in groups, as if in fear of being waylaid. The facts were appalling enough, but a thousand exaggerations and inventions filled the air, and intensified the universal excitement.—Popular Science Monthly. The Chinese Troubles Settled.
