O'Connell's Eloquence.
I do not think I should exaggerate if I said that God, since he made Demoathenes, never made a man so fit for the great work as he did O'Connell. You may think I am partial to my hero, very naturally. But John Randolph of Bonnoake, who hated an Irishman almost as much as he did a Yankee, when he got to London and heard O'Connell, the slave-holder held up his hand and said: "This is the man, those are the lips, the most eloquent that speak English in my day." And I think he was right. Webster could address a bench of judges; Everett could charm a college; Choate could delude a jury; Clay could magnetize a senate; Tom Clay could hold a mob in his right hand; but no one of them could do more than that one thing. The wonder of O'Connell was, that he could out-talk Corwin; he could charm a college better than Everett; delude a jury better than Choate; and leave Clay himself far behind in magnetizing a senate. I have heard all the grand and majestic orators of America, who are singularly famed on the world's circumference. I know what was the majesty of Webster; I know what it was to melt under the magnetism of Henry Clay; I have seen eloquence in the iron logic of Calhoun; but all three together never surpassed, and no one of them ever equaled, the great Irishman. In the first place he had, what is half the power with a popular orator, he had a majestic presence. God put that royal soul into a body as royal. He had, in youth, the brow of Jove or Jupiter, and the stature of Apollo; a little O'Connell would have been no O'Connell at all. Sydney Smith said of Lord John Russell's five feet, when he went down to Yorkshire, after the reform bill had been carried, the stalwart hunters of Yorkshire, said: "That little shrimp! What, he carry the reform bill?" "No, no," said Sydney; "no; he was a large man; but the labor of the bill shrunk him." (Renewed laughter.) Do you remember the story of Webster, that Russell Lowell tells, when we, in Massachusetts, were about to break up the whig party? Webster came home to Faneuil hall to protest: and four thousand whigs went to meet him. He lifted up that majestic presence before the sea of human faces, his brow charged with thunder, and he said: "I am a whig, a Massachusetts whig, a revolutionary whig. And, if you break up the whig party, where am I to go?" And Russell Lowell says: "We held breath thinking where he could go." "But if
London Bridge.
As the boat shoots under the arches and up the river, the bridge comes into view—the busiest place in all busy London. About eight thousand people on foot and nine hundred vehicles pass over it every hour in the day. The rumble of the traffic as it comes to us on the boat is like the roll of distant thunder. I can compare it to nothing else, trite as the simile is. In the background you can see the Tower, in which offenders of the Government were imprisoned in the barbous times of old; and Billingsgate, the largest fish market in the world. The dealers and their customers are hotfous for the use of bad language, and the word "Billingsgate" is commonly accepted in writing and conversation as meaning abuse or profanity.
The bridge has been rebuilt several times, and the present one cost ten millions of dollars in gold; so you may imagine how substantial it is. In the reign of Queen Elizabeth there were stores on each side, with arbors and gardens, and at the south end there was a queer wooden house, brought from Holland, which was covered with carving and gilding. In the middle ages it was the scene of affrays of all kinds, and it was burned down several times, three thousand persons perishing in one fire alone. The heads of rebels were stuck on the gatehouse, among others those of Jack Cade, and of Garnet, who was concerned in the gunpowder plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament. The heads of good Sir Thomas Moore, brave Wallace of Scotland, and the pious Bishop of Rochester were also placed there, and until a comparatively recent date such ghastly trophies glanced down on the passers-by. They were fastened on iron spikes, and in a gale of wind they sometimes rolled to the ground or into the water.
Three hundred and fifteen years ago, the Lord Mayor of London was Sir William Hewet. Hewet lived in a house on the bridge, and had an infant daughter named Anne. The current of the Thames was then very strong, as there was a fall of several feet underneath the arches. One day a nurse was playing with baby Anne at a window overlooking the river, and in a carless moment she let her little charge fall. A young apprentice named Osborne plunged into the boiling stream after her, thus earning the life-long gratitude of his master, the Lord Mayor. Anne grew to be a beautiful woman, and
OUR MISPORTUNES ARE INVITED.—"Accidental misfortunes will happen to all, but as I have said, and the observation of life forces me to believe it more firmly every year, no one ever remains unfortunate without there being, generally speaking, some recondite reason, some screw loose somewhere, accounting for the fact." So speaks Miss Muloch in her latest book, and there is much meaning in her philosophy. It may be overstated, or it may be a general statement in which there is room for many exceptions, but it is worth pondering. A great majority of those who complain of misfortune are persons who have invited the ills by which they are burdened. They have perversely made a wrong start, they have refused the invitations of wisdom and the warnings of Providence, and they have blundered on against the advice of friend and foe, and their failure is simply the result of their folly. In these hard times we find dozens of men in every community who are deploring their miseries and the Three hundred and fifteen years ago, the Lord Mayor of London was Sir William Hewet. Anne grew to be a beautiful woman, and as her father was very wealthy, many noblemen, including earls and baronets, sought her hand. But she loved Osborn the best, and to all other suitors her father said: "No; Osborn won her and Osborn shall have her." So he did, and he afterwards became the first Duke of Leeds.—St. Nicholas.
The Art of Not Hearing.
The art of not hearing is fully as important to domestic happiness as a cultivated ear, for which so much time and money is expended. There are so many things which it is painful to hear, many of which, if heard, will disturb the temper and detract from contentment and happiness, that every one should be educated to take in or shut out sounds at will.
If a man falls into a violent passion and calls me all manner of names, the first word shuts my ears and I hear no more. If in my quiet voyage of life, I am caught in one of those domestic whirlwinds of scolding, I shut my ears, as a sailor would furl his sail, and making all tight, send before the gale. If a hot and restless man begins to inflame my feelings, I consider what mischief these sparks might do in the magazine below, where my temper is kept, and instantly close the door. Does a gadding, mischief-making fellow begin to inform me what people are saying about me, down drops the portcullis of my ear, and he cannot get any further.
Some people feel very anxious to hear everything that will vex or annoy them. If it is hinted any one has spoken ill of them, they set about searching and finding it out. If all the petty things said of one by the heedless or ill-natured idlers were to be brought home to him, he would become a mere walking pinchion, stuck full of sharp remarks. I should as soon thank a man for emptying on my head a bushel of nettles, or setting loose a swarm of mosquitoes in my chamber, or raising a pungent dust in my house generally, as to bring upon me all the tattle of spiteful people. If you would be happy among good men, open your ears; when among bad, shut them.
It is not worth while to hear what your servants say when they are angry; what your children say when they have slammed the door; what a beggar says whose petition you have rejected; what your neighbors say about your children; what your rival says about your dress or business. I have noticed that a well-bred woman never hears an impertinent remark. A kind of discreet deafness saves one from many insults, from much blame, from not a little apparent connection to the ground or into the water.

GROWING OLD.—How steadily the years creep upon us, one by one, until some day we are startled to find ourselves grown old! It is curious to see what a different estimate people put upon old age at different periods of their own lives. To the youth in his teens the man of middle age appears quite antiquated; but when he himself arrives at forty years he can scarce believe he is no longer young, and is astonished to see so many who were but infants the other day, now jostling him as full grown men in the race of life. Said one gentleman to another in our hearing:
"What has become of all the old men? When you and I were boys there were many old men about, but they seem to be all gone."
"Ah," said his friend, with a smile, "ask these youngsters where the old men are. They'll tell you, and you will find yourself among them."
MAN'S INDEPENDENCE.—Man relies far more than he is aware for happiness on woman's tact and management. He is so accustomed to these that he is unconsolous of their worth. They are so delicately concealed and yet so ceaselessly exerted, that he enjoys their effect as he enjoys the light and atmosphere. He seldom thinks how it would be with him when they withdrawn. He falls to appreciate what is so finally given. He may be reminded of them now and then; may complain of intrusion and interference; but the frown is swept away by a gentle hand, the murmuring lips stopped with a caress, and the management goes on.
TOO MUCH SHAVING WATER.—A certain minister, having become much addicted to drink, his presbytery had to interfere and get the minister to sign the pledge. This the minister did, and promised that he would never again take a drink under any pretence whatever. The minister certainly kept his word; but the result was that the sudden reaction proved too much for him, and he took so ill that the doctor had to be sent for.
The doctor knew the habits of the man well, and informed him that he must just begin and take his toddy again. This the minister said he could not do, as he had taken the pledge in the presence of the presbytery. The doctor replied that he might get a bottle or two quietly, and that nobody but himself (the minister) and the housekeeper would know anything about it.
"Man," said the minister, "my housekeeper is worse than all the presbytery put together, so that would not do."
However, it was arranged that the doctor was to bring in the whisky and sugar, and that the minister was to make up the toddy in his bed-room with the hot water he always got for shaving purposes.
The result was the minister got speedily well; and one day on going out, the doctor said to the minister's housekeeper: "Well, Margaret, your master is quite himself again."
"There's nae doot aboot that, sir," she replied; "he's quite weel in body, but there's something gone far wrang wi' his upper story."
"What's wrang there, Margaret!" asked the doctor.
"Weal, sir, I dinns hen, but he asks for shaving water six and seven times!' the day."

SAN FRANCISCO MARKET.
Notwithstanding the unusual tightness in the money market the general business of the city has been steadily improving and the present volume of trade compares favorably with same period of any former year. It is stated on good authority that the Bank of California will resume business on the first of October, with an additional guaranteed capital of $7,500,000, all of which is now subscribed. The new Bank of Nevada will open for business on the 4th of October, with a paid-up capital of $5,000,000. It is also asserted that the S. F. Stock and Exchange Board will also open for a continuance of regular sessions of sales of stock on or about the first proximo. As far as we can learn there have been no business or commercial failures on the coast in consequence of the late interruptions; a fact, which in itself, speaks volumes for the financial condition of the coast. Our merchants now regard the future business prospects of the State as being of a cheering and substantial character.
Wheat receipts continue large, the bulk of which go on board ships for export immediately on arrival. Exports from July 1st to date aggregate about 1,700,000 centsals wheat and flour, having a value in round numbers of $3,500,000. Freights are now firm at £210s 6d to England.
The amount of disengaged tonnage in our harbor at this date is about 15,500 tons.
Wheat is slightly off from quotation last week, and a little more business is doing, as holders are not quite as firm and buyers are willing purchasers at our quotations. The four market is steady for higher grades; superfine has experienced a slight decline with an increase of trade for export. Barley is weak at rates quoted with light transactions. Oats continue steady. Eye is quiet and prices low. Corn is in large supply and prices are nominal.
Wool is rather active on account of low prices, especially for the fall clip, which is coming forward freely.
Fruits of all seasonable varieties are in active demand, and with the exception of grapes, which are abundant, command high prices as compared with former seasons; the supply is quite moderate: our quotations have a wide range, as prices fluctuate daily according to the supply.
WHEAT.-Receipts during the week have continued large, the greater part of which having been previously purchased for export goes directly on board ship. Transactions for the week show an improvement of the previous month. There has been but slight change in price of Wheat since our last report, either here or in Liverpool. The market here shows more activity though prices are firm at our quotations, which are as follows:
Home Manufacturer--Edge Tools.
Little more than a year ago Mr. W. F. Palmer, in connection with another gentleman, fitted up a factory on Berry et., between Fourth and Fifth, San Francisco, for the manufacture of edged tools. As the capital at the command of these gentlemen was limited, they, of necessity, rallied for their success on the labor of their hands. When but a few months had passed, their business met with a serious check by the sudden death of Mr. Palmer's partner. This misfortune subjected their mutual property to the usual legal process, and, as a consequence, greatly retarded the progress of the business.
Mr. Palmer, however, resolved to push the business forward by his own exertions, and, with only one helper in his factory, toiled on day after day, determined to show the mechanics of San Francisco that he could furnish them with tools that would claim patronage by their excellence and durability. Many of them were, however, slow to understand why they should pay a higher price for the tools he manufactured than apparently the same kind of tool of Eastern make. But when a few had been convinced that the beat was the cheapest, even though at a greater expense, the word soon passed from mouth to mouth, that W. F. Palmer was manufacturing a superior implement, and it was not long until the merit of his tools had secured him a living patronage.
Although his manufacturing facilities are yet limited, the reputation that his wares have secured to him has placed his business on a substantial basis, and with the rapidly increasing demand, will provide the means for extending these facilities. He confines himself principally to the manufacture of ship carpenters', house carpenters', millwrights' and butchers' tools. His experience in this line is large, having been engaged in the same business for a number of years in Atlantic States. It is a common saying among wood workers, that "any tool that will stand the work in ship building will stand anything." Allowing this to be true (and it certainly is a good test), Mr. Palmer, no doubt takes great satisfaction in viewing the long list of names of San Francisco mechanics which he has, that attests the superiority of the work he turns out. When it was generally understood that a Fair was to be held this season, Mr. Palmer immediately began preparation for an exhibition that would be both attractive and instructive. As a result of his labor, in this direction, we would refer the visitor to his stand, at the west wall of the Pavilion, about midway, where he makes a fine display of the kind of tools he manufactures. That these are entirely of home manufacture, the samples that are here seen in the different stages of perfection—from the crude iron up to the finished tool—is evidence.

California Machine Silk.
One of most attractive displays in this Mechanics' Industrial Exhibition is that from the California Silk Manufacturing Company comprising machine silks of every style and color. The most interesting portion of this appointment is to greater part of the visitors will be the quarter-ounce spoils made pressy for family use from the finest grade of raw silk containing double the quantity of silk of the Eastern 100-yard spoils shown here. Being far superior to those in strength consumers will find it better economy to buy the California quarter-ounce than the low priced but inferior articles imported.
No notice that the Company were distributing small sample spoils showing the quality their quarter-ounce goods so that parties could judge for themselves as to its merits.
The Company's first-class goods are made from Teatlee raw silk, the finest grade known from market and are acknowledged to be best in market. They make however, as end and cheaper grade, in order to meet demand from a certain class of trade for an article.

Wheat. Receipts during the week have continued large, the greater part which having been previously purchased for export goes directly on board ship. Transactions for the week show an improvement of the previous month. There has been but slight change in price of Wheat since our last report, either here or in Liverpool. The market here shows more activity though prices are firm at our quotations, which are as follows: Fair to good milling and export grades range from $195@20$; choice milling commands $210. The following are the latest Livermore quotations: Average California wheat, 10s 10d@11s; Club, 11s@11s 6d.
FLOUR. The trade is very quiet and dull, there being but little export requirement on account of the high prices ruling and the difficulty of obtaining superfine in quantities within the range of purchasers' limits. The following are present market rates: Superfine standard brands, $25@50; shipping, extra, $60@6$; extra family silk dressed, $25@50 per bbl. The latter a jobbing rate.
BARLEY. Receipts during the week have been very large and the market is quiet, and prices, though unchanged, are weak. Coast feed is quotable within the range of $137@142$. New Brewing is held at $150@155; Old Brewing, $170@175 per cental.
OATS. Owing to heavy receipts of both Barley and Oats prices of the latter have declined slightly, and at the close the market is weak at our quotations. The present range is $160@185 per cental for feed, and $190@195 per choice.
RYE. Receipts are moderate, while the demand is light and prices are low. The range of prices for the week have been $135@140, the latter an extreme rate for extra choice.
CORN. With large receipts from southern coast and small transactions, the price has fallen off a little. The present range is $137@142"; the latter for prime Yellow; White is quotable at $150@155.
BRAN and MIDDLINGS. The mill prices are steady at $250 for bran and $350 ton for middlings. The demand is good.
HAY. Receipts have been very large of late, keeping down prices for all grades except choice wheat, which is now selling at $148@100 per ton. The range of prices for all other kinds is from $120 per ton upwards.
STRAW. A good article is saleable at 50@55c per bale.
BEANS. Supplies are large and prices weak. The market exhibits a downward tendency. Following are present quotations for jobbing lots: Bayo, $25@75; Butter, $32@35 for small, $35@75 for large; White, small, $25@62; Paan, $25@62 for 255 cents central. Pink and Red, $150@155.
SEEDS. There is a demand for Mustard and Flax seed at low figures. We quote: Flax, Do, 3@3½c; Mustard, white, 1½@2½c; Mustard, Brown, new 2@2½c; Canary oil, Allalfa, 10@12½c.
HOPS. The new crop has made its appearance, but as yet only in small lots. The yield is said to be an average one, and general quality good. The demand is light as the market has not fairly opened. The price as quoted now is nominal at 18@22c p.h.
HONEY. There is no change to report in prices. Receipts are free from the Southern Coast, and although the demand is not equal to the supply yet prices remain quite steady while stocks accumulate. The range of prices are quotable as follows: 18@22for White Comb; dark do., 10@15c; Strained remains steady at 6@10c according to quality.
BEESWAX. Receipts are moderate, with a fair demand. We note sales at 27½c; Choice is quotable at 30c, jobbing.
POTATOES. Receipts are liberal, but a rumor of short crops tends to keep up prices. The present range is $135@165 for Cuffey Cove and Half-Moon Bay. We have a liberal supply of Sweets selling at $112¾$ per cental.
ONIONS are in fair demand. Supplies are in excess of daily requirements and prices weak at 90¾c for Silverskins.

While the Remington does not like many other sewing machines, claim that it is the "lightest running," the "most durable," that it makes the most "perfect lock stitch," or that, in short, it is the "best machine that is made," it does most positively lay valid claim to a merit that none other dare pervert, and that is, that it is the Remington. One of the demands of the age is for useful articles which shall be at the same time beautiful to look upon. It is no longer possible to dispose of wares, which on the score of utility, are simply good enough, but which display nothing artistic in their production. At the present time the purchaser seeks an article not only perfectly adapted in form and construction to the material of which it is made; and to the purpose to which it is to be applied; but it must also be artistically wrought, ornamented and beautified. Beauty has become an important element in commercial valuation and decoration plays an important part in all processes of manufacture. People ask for artiwork and when found, are ready to pay for it. We were led to these reflections after examining the elegant display of cutlery made at the Pavilion by Messrs. Will & Finck, manufacturing cutlers and locksmiths.$\textcircled{2}$ Kearny St. San Francisco. The conditions above described as precedent to success, have been fully reached by these gentlemen in their line of manufacture. Everything in their exhibit, both in the material and in the make-up, is calculated to impress the visitor with the fact that they not only understand their business, but they also take an honest pride in it,and seek to excel. Their exhibit affords a most striking evidence of the elaborate and rapid progress which has been made in this State in the useful and difficult branch of industry in which they are engaged. They have on exhibition almost everything included in their line of business - table and pocket cutlery, bowline knives, surgical instruments, shoemaker's tools, locks, etc. Every piece is finished up in the highest and most perfect style of the art. We noticed one full set of table cutlery valued at $240,a carving set at $65,and corkscrews at $14 each.
Messrs. Will & Finck have manufactured a large number of elegant door-hings for the Palace Hotel, one of which,a really elegant piece of workmanship,h has been placed on exhibition. They also exhibit neat and beautifully finished card-cutters; also an elegant sample of one of the patient "nippiers" now so generally used in removing the coupons from street-car tickets. There is more significance in that one word than the public has as yet had time to comprehend. But when its true and full meaning shall be known there will be found in almost every household a Remington Family Sewing Machine. It further claims for itself a simplicity of parts that is alone sufficient to make it at once a favorite. It also has at once taken rank with the best machines for the perfection of workmanship and the quality of the material used in its construction! It is beautiful in design, though not claiming merit because of any gaudy finish. It took the Grand Medal of Progress, the highest order of medal that was awarded at the late Vienna Exposition, and has received numerous premiums and diplomas at the fairs of various States. That what is here said is undisputably true, and that much might be in its favor has been left unsaid, inquiry and investigation at the stand occupied by the Remington Sewing Machines will convince the most skeptical; or should the reader still question the veracity of the statements, let him apply to Messrs. Showers, Jewell & Cole, general agents, at 31 Third st., S.F., where the machine itself stands in readiness to argue any such disputed points.
The Star Spring Bed.
In no branch of mechanic work is there so decided an improvement as in the manufacture of beds. Many very excellent ones have been introduced and have become deservedly popular, but among them all the Star Spring Bed manufactured by J. Gray, 437 Brannan street San Francisco stands preeminent. It is made of "A No. 1" steel wire, which is also manufactured by Mr. Gray on the premises. The spring is what is called the Double Cone Spring, and is coupled or connected by a four-armed wire clasp in such a way as to protect bed and bedding from all friction or wear, and is the simplest, cheapest and yet the best manner of fastening springs of any use. The bed is light; may be used either up and may be moved from room room by a woman or boy, with ease. They afford no refuge for vermin; no receptacle for dirt and dust. No one article of furniture in a house is of more importance to the comfort of a family than a good bed, and we advise our friends to give the "Star" a trial; and if they do we are assured that they will be pleased with it. It is upon exhibition at the Mechanical Fair in San Francisco, where it attracts the attention of all and seems to be the favored bed upon exhibition. Mr. Gray guarantees his beds to last ten years and we see no reason why they should not last a much longer period.

John A. Stone, the genial author and sweet
singer, who wrote PUT'S GOLDEN SONGSTER, and sang it through the Northern and Southern miles,
in one role that he felt was a place in every California home. Take, for example,

CHORUS:
So I get in a jovial way. I spend my money free;
And I have got a plenty-will you drink some beer with me?
