Kleinigkeiten.
From Saturday's Daily.
—Gold opened in New York this morning at 1101.
—The San Juan Capistrano land cases are drawing to a close.
—F. P. F. Temple will arrive in Los Angeles on Monday.
—The new depot at Costa station is nearly finished, the frame work being all up.
—J. J. Haines, Superintendent of the Western Union Telegraph line, is in town to-day.
—The Anaheim Lodge of Good Templars initiated a number of persons last evening.
—The grape crop at the Kraemer place will be very light this year. The corn crop is excellent.
—a local artist, a Mexican, is engaged in making a copy of Toby Rosenthal's famous picture "Elaine."
—In the case of Kroeger vs. Weixel, tried in the District Court, Judgment was rendered in favor of the plaintiff.
—I. W. Hellman, of the Farmers' and Merchants' Bank, is in New York, and will arrive in Los Angeles in a couple of weeks.
—Rev. Mr. Allis will preach to-morrow morning upon the subject of Infant Baptism. Parents are specially invited.
—the financial secretary of the lodge of Janissaries of Light at Downey City has absconded with the funds of which are also valuable, takes a little more expense and good judgment than the former. The walls must be thoroughly cleaned, when the footwall will be found smooth, while the hanging wall has a rough, broken appearance. The reason of it is that the liquid mineral matter falling or rushing into the crevice will by its force smooth the lower side against which it runs, leaving the upper with its rough face to receive the fluid and settle in it without strong action.
The third class' veins finally—the true fissure vein, I mean—is formed in the way before described, the immense mineral deposits in our earth sending a body of liquid mineral to the surface. It breaks its way in a straight line through the crust, acting strongly against all obstacles, and smoothing its hanging wall in many instances as if polished. Coming to the atmosphere it cools, but at times even somewhat sooner, which leaves the walls for a short depth rather undefined, but penetrating a little, the hanging wall at least will be found well defined, straight and with a steady inclination.
In my short experience here I have had many occasions to meet with all these formations and with as true fissure veins as were ever found in any country. But our capitalists are discouraged, being so often misled by ignorant or malicious men; let them see themselves, when they embark in a speculation, let them take note of what is said above, and they will never be the losers.
The Tehunga mountains have fissure veins of gold, have mica and iron, San Fernando quicksilver, kaolin, oil and no doubt coal; San Gabriel mountain traces of big silver and copper deposits everywhere. Now go and develop them. Mining has been the main nerve of California's prosperity, and will also be of Los Angeles county:—Express.
REPORT OF THE GRAND JURY.
The Grand Jury on Saturday presented their report to Judge O'Melveny. They examined into thirty-seven criminal charges, and found twenty-four true bills, as follows: Petit larceny 1, grand larceny 4, assault with a deadly weapon 1, assault to kill 1, assault to murder 2, robbery 2, asault with a
I. W. Hellman, of the Farmers' and Merchants' Bank, is in New York, and will arrive in Los Angeles in a couple of weeks.
Rev. Mr. Allis will preach to-morrow morning upon the subject of Infant Baptism. Parents are specially invited.
The financial secretary of the lodge of Janissaries of Light at Downey City has absconded with the funds of the lodge. So says the Courier.
Sheehan, of San Juan, who published a card in a Los Angeles paper reflecting upon Capt. Mullen, has had his head punched by a pugnacious friend of the Captain.
More relics of bycogene days have been discovered by the workmen on the Cajon ditch. A number of shark's teeth were found the other day imbedded in the sand-stone rock.
We have received in pamphlet form the interesting series of articles on Southern California, written for the Anaheim Gazette, by Wm. R. Olden. The pamphlet ought to be extensively circulated at the East. It is a clear, calm and comprehensive treatise on the soil, climate and productions of our beautiful section.—Downey Courier.
We made brief mention yesterday of the sulphur well recently struck near Sanford's place. The Downey Courier has the following on the subject: We have received from Dr. Fulton a bottle of white sulphur water, famed for its medical properties. This is a remarkably strong mineral water, taken from a depth of three hundred and twenty feet from the artesian well on the Santa Gertrudes ranch. Ashort distance away the sulphur can be gathered up by handsful, the sediment left by the water as it flows from the well. The doctor has suspended work on this well, it being designed to keep it as it is solely for its medical properties. Another artesian well is to be bored a short distance away.
WHY THE MINING INTERESTS OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY REMAIN UNDEVELOPED.
BY ERICH G. GAERTNER, MINING ENGINEER.
There is a range of mountains in the northern part of this county, where the mighty Sierra Madre and the Coast Range butt together, a wild, broken, almost impenetrable territory, over twenty-five miles square, extending traces of big silver and copper deposits everywhere. Now go and develop them. Mining has been the main nerve of California's prosperity, and will also be of Los Angeles county.
REPORT OF THE GRAND JURY.
The Grand Jury on Saturday presented their report to Judge O'Melveny. They examined into thirty-seven criminal charges, and found twenty-four true bills, as follows: Petit larceny 1, grand larceny 4, assault with a deadly weapon 1, assault to kill 1, assault to murder 2, robbery 2, assault with a deadly instrument 1, disorderly house 1, disorderly house and house of ill-fame 1, renting houses for the purpose of keeping houses of ill-fame 4, keeping houses of ill-fame 6.
REPORT ON COUNTY JAIL.
We find the prison clean and well kept, inadequate to meet the requirements of our rapidly growing city and county. We do earnestly recommend that a suitable jail building be erected at as early a day as practicable.
We further believe, to the best of our knowledge, that the prison is insecure, as far as regards the stone portion of that building, as we find the stone in places quite soft and easily removable with an ordinary pocket knife; and, to the best of our knowledge and belief, we do declare the jail to be an unsafe custodian for an expert in jail-breaking, and we do recommend the matter to the proper authorities, with the hope that immediate steps be taken in the matter, as the jail building of Los Angeles county is unfit for the purpose it claims to subserve.
REPORT ON THE COUNTY HOSPITAL.
We find some of the wards not kept as clean as they ought to be. Neither did there seem to be attendants enough to attend to those who were very sick.
We found there was no means of warming any of the wards in cold weather, except in the new wards, in which a chimney or flue has been constructed.
We recommend that hereafter at least one stove be supplied to each ward.
We also find that there is a good deal of complaint that there is unnecessary delay in sending medicine to the Hospital, thereby causing much suffering to some of the patients.
We call the attention of the Board of Supervisors and the City Council to the expense of keeping the Hospital on the present plan, and we most earnestly recommend that they either separately or jointly take some steps to provide a County Hospital which shall belong to the county or county and city.
REPORT ON LABORY LANE TANNERY.
We recommend the Board of Health of Los Angeles city to investigate the matter, and if found to be a nuisance, to take immediate steps to have the same abated, as we, the Grand Jurors, believe the same to be a public nuisance and detriment to the health of the residents in that vilinity.
WHY THE MINING INTERESTS OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY REMAIN UNDEVELOPED.
BY ERICH G. GAERTNER, MINING ENGINEER.
There is a range of mountains in the northern part of this county, where the mighty Sierra Madre and the Coast Range butt together, a wild, broken, almost impenetrable territory, over twenty-five miles square, extending from San Fernando to San Bernardino, and from Los Verdugos to the Mojave desert, which is without a doubt as rich in noble metals as any mining district in California. But the enormous washes which the country has been subject to, and which have covered the whole surface with a layer of float matter, settled over the veins and filled them from sight. This wash, combined with the imprudence and defective good sense of men who have prospected there, has been the cause of a good many failures. Our mountains contain gold, silver, mercury, copper, and numerous other valuable deposits in abundance, and it needs but thorough prospecting and a few speculative men to extract them. One of the main reasons of bad success has been the defective knowledge of the formation of veins, which has misled prospectors into spending years of work and thousands of dollars, where but a trifle should have convinced them of their mistake.
There are in our mountains three different kinds of mineral formations:
The first is often met with and is merely a piece of a large vein, broken off and slick down, when it settled against some object and remained. This can easily be discerned from a true fissure vein by its broken contents, having neither wall properly defined and the ore in sharp edged pieces. The aforementioned washes have been the principal cause of so many such fractional veins in our mountains.
The second class of veins is formed in the following manner:
Taking it for granted that all veins were formed by volcanic action—the liquid matter breaking its way to the surface—then an amount may run over and fill any crevice existing below, thus forming a wedge-shaped mineral deposit, wide at the top and giving out at the bottom.
To recognize this class of veins,
We recommend the Board of Health of Los Angeles city to investigate the matter, and, if found to be a nuisance, to take immediate steps to have the same abated, as we, the Grand Jurors, believe the same to be a public nuisance and detriment to the health of the residents in that vicinity.
We recommend the Los Angeles City Marshal to enforce the vagrant act, as there are a great many bad characters loafing about town, without any visible means of support.
We tender our thanks to the District Attorney for his kind attendance, and to the Sheriff and his deputies for their kind and prompt attendance in bringing up witnesses, and their polite and courteous manner to the Grand Jurors of Los Angeles county, for the September Term, 1875.
M. H. KIMBALL,
Foreman of the Grand Jury.
The Sacramento Bee moralizes to this effect: A little three-year old, sweet as a violet and blooming as a rose, clothed in white, with towy tresses and bronzed boots, stood broom in hand, sweeping the sidewalk and making the dust fly like a racer. The mother saw her, and how she did run. "Annie, come in this minute off the street! See how you are soiling your clean dress!" and the poor little thing, so much in need of exercise and play, was snaked into the house to mope and moan, and longed to be in the open air again that she might exercise her muscles and give expansion to her lungs. But the cruel, inconsiderate mother, for the sake of pleasing her own weak vanity in showing off the lovely child, must needs dress her like a doll and put her away in a band-box, thus not only destroying her child's health, but instilling into her childish mind the love of dress which is so largely the cause of the ruin of American girls and the destruction of families. A wise mother—but alas how few of them are wise in such a case—would, when she saw her child so desirous of sport, have disobed her of her white, put on some dust-colored dress, given the child its little broom and said. "Now, daughter, go out and sweep the sidewalk for mama and then come in and take a swing, or go
and make mud pies until you are tired again." This course would in a few years, give her a strong, robust and healthy child, while the other course may, as like as not, lead to a funeral, or want is worse, a weak, feeble, half-mad up woman. Oh! Mothers of America, how much have you to answer for when you thus, for vain show, break down the constitution of your children and sow in their youthful minis the seeds of a life-time of misery!
CONTRAST.
THE WIFE.
As you say, Colonel; here it is charming;
("Sweet Aug. I beg for a waiter.")
Your flattery's really alarming;
I am sure that you know it is false.
But I'll whirl with you round for a minute,
Just to prove how you erred in your haste;
A walk is quite nice while you're in it—
Don't hold quite so tight on my waist.
(Writes.)
"Dear husband: I'm penning this letter In loneliness here at the Springs;
Every day makes me deeper your debtor For the kind words the previous mail brings,
But obl' what'a void fills my bosom—
You there, and I here all alone;
No friends if I'en wish to choose 'em,
You chained to your desk like a drone."
THE HUSBAND.
"Here, Charley, help fill up this basket;
Put in the champagne and the ice;
Never mind if you should o'ertask it—
Fill it up with this brie-a-brac nice.
Those Dutch girls will soon make it lighter After the dance and the swings.
Throw in these cigars. Strap it tighter,
While I write a word to the Springs."
(Writes.)
"Slowly the shadows are falling.
Alike on my desk and my life;
The plaint of famished love, calling For you, my sweet treasure—my wife;
I sit here so wearily thinking.
And wishing my penance were o'er,
And dreaming our love is a linking My heart with your heart evermore."
