Anahiem Gazette
SATURDAY...AUG. 21, 1875.
Friday's Daily.
—The Atlantic and Pacific line will be completed to Anaheim this evening.
—Anahiem Lodge, F. & A. M. will hold their regular meeting this evening.
—A pocket book, containing private papers was lost on the night of the fire. A suitable reward will be paid on the return of the book to this office.
—The Museum Huntington, Grey and Crocker, of the S. P. B. R. arrived here this morning by special train. They have gone on to San Diego.
—A. C. Nixon informs us that he will commence his duties as night-watchman this evening; so that we erred in stating yesterday that he had abandoned the project.
—Senator Booth and Governor Pacheco will address the people of Los Angeles on next Thursday or Friday. Hon. Jas. A. Johnson will speak in the same place on Monday evening.
—Mr. Olden was up at the head of the Cajon ditch yesterday, and he informs us that the water in the river is 127 feet wide. He further says that there is more water than could be taken out by any ditch that could be built.
—A ball will be given at Bernettsville on next Friday night. The projectors of the party have shown a fine sense of humor in the way they have "made up the ticket." For instance, we find on the Committee of Invitation the names of Temple and Rowan, Gillette and Miles, Hazard and Lambourne. The floor-managers are Ryan and Fryer, Saxon and Furlong.
—Mr. C. W. Good, candidate for County Auditor, called on us this morning. He was en route for Santa Ana.
—It is rumored that Brierly intends to revive the New Era in Los Angeles during the campaign, as an Independent sheet.
—a barn, containing ten tons of hay, together with some harness, plows, etc., was burned yesterday morning at Santa Ana.
—a thief entered Govemor Downey's house a few nights ago and stole a musical box. As he reached the door, the box commenced to play, and the thief, in great fright, dropped the box and ran.
—Judge Bailey, will leave Anaheim to-morrow, to commence a thorough canvass of the county. We are pleased to learn from our correspondents in all parts of the county, that Mr. Bailey's prospects for election are excellent. The sterling excellence of the man, and his undoubted probity and honor, commend him to the people. It will be a bright day for Los Angeles, when it sends to the State Legislature a man so capable and honest as Mr. Bailey.
—The Downey Courier, published at the home of Mr. Ryan, says: A. W. Ryan, of Los Nietos, is our nominee for Assessor. For years Mr. Ryan has been connected with this important office, and made it a study to thoroughly familiarize himself with all its details. We will venture to say that there is no one in the county so capable of filling so satisfactorily this important and oneous position to-day as Mr. Ryan. Verily, he is the right man in the right place.
—We are indebted to M. Gray, music publisher of San Francisco, for the following pieces of music: “Bonanza Waltz” “Footsteps on the Stair.” a

—We find in the Los Angeles Express of the 11th instant, a meteorological report, prepared for that paper by Messrs. Fisher & Thatcher. We find that for the seven days quoted the maximum at Los Angeles was one degree higher than at Anaheim, while the minimum, or night temperature was nine degrees higher there than here.
—The ways of the Chincee are peculiar and his tricks are vain, saith Bret Harte. Heimann employs one of the almond-colored race. He told him the other day to stow away a lot of baled hay in the stable. The Chinaman went to work, but found an unexpected obstacle in the door-way, which was not large enough to admit the bales. Instead of taking an axe and chopping one side of the stable down, or lifting the building up and rolling the hay under it, as any sane man would have done, he cut the ropes, took a pitchfork, chucked the hay in the stable and thus, to his own satisfaction, solved a very difficult problem.
Santa Monica.
The Gazette's correspondent at Santa Monica writes as follows:
On Thursday afternoon the "City of Panama," P. M. S. S. Co.'s steamer, was discharging freight, railroad iron, on the east side of Santa Monica wharf. She lay bow to the sea. Just aft of her, a brig, "Dencon of Oakland," was discharging lumber and ties; while aft of her again a small schooner was discharging lumber. On the west side of the wharf, the steamer Senator, lying stern to sea, bow inshore, was discharging freight and receiving freight and passengers. All these vessels laid as easily alongside the wharf as they would have done at San Francisco. I was really surprised to see how little they chafed. I heard it rumored that the "City of Panama" left the boiler and driving wheels of the locomotive at Aspinwall, to the great disappointment of those interested here.
From Monday's Daily.
—Shearing will begin on the San Joaquin Rancho on Thursday.
The senior partner of the firm of been connected with this important office, and made it a study to thoroughly familiarize himself with all its details. We will venture to say that there is no one in the county so capable of filling so satisfactorily this important and onerous position to-day as Mr. Ryan. Verily, he is the right man in the right place.
—We are indebted to M. Gray, music publisher of San Francisco, for the following pieces of music: "Bonanza Waltz;" "Footsteps on the Stair," a ballad; "Keeping Watch," a song; "Give me kisses," a ballad; "The Story of Christ," a new and beautiful ballad; "Friends in Heaven."
We endorse the following which we clip from a Los Angeles paper. It is true, every word of it: On the principle that every official who has discharged the duties of his office capably and satisfactorily should be complied with a re-election, Mr. Gillette's canvass should be a surrease from the word go. Everybody is loud in bearing testimony to the care, intelligence and fidelity with which the duties of that office have been performed during Mr. Gillette's occupancy of it. His duty as Recorder simply compels him to copy and file the papers entrusted to him. He has done more than the task nominated in the bond. All persons acquainted with Mr. Gillette as Recorder are aware of the fact that he has never allowed a defective deed to go upon the record. At considerable trouble to himself, he has always been careful to have any defects rectified before being spread upon the records. He has been polite and painstaking to the bar and the public, knows nearly all the farmers personally and he will certainly be elected by a gratifying majority.
Constitutional Convention.
It may not be generally known, says the San Francisco Bulletin, that the electors of the State will have an opportunity to vote at the approaching general election upon calling a convention to revise the State Constitution. The Legislature at its last session passed a bill to this effect, and made the proper provision therein for the preparation and transmission of an abstract to the vote of the Senate and Assembly at the commencement of the next session. The ballots used may contain the words "For the Convention," or the words "Against the Convention." But a majority in the affirmative of all the votes cast upon the proposition will not, of itself, be sufficient to call the Convention. It must also be "a majority of the aggregate vote of the State," cast for members of the Legislature." This being in the affirmative, the law provides that the Convention shall be deemed to have been called. There has been as yet very little expression of opinion in public discussion as to the advisability of putting the provisions of the Act into use.
From Monday's Daily.
—Shearing will begin on the San Joaquin Rancho on Thursday.
—The senior partner of the firm of D. & G. D. Plato has gone to San Francisco to purchase a new stock of goods.
—T. J. Ellis, the Democratic nominee for County Surveyor, is in town. He reports the prospects favorable for his election.
—At the meeting of the Anaheim Water Company on Saturday, Messrs. Helgann, Reiser and Rimpau were appointed a Committee to confer with the Commissioners of Water Districts 1 and 2, in regard to co-operating with them. The conference between the Committee and Commissioners will be held to-morrow afternoon.
From Tuesday's Daily.
—J. Q. A. Stanley, is a candidate for Supervisor of the First District.
—Mr. H. Clarke, of the law firm of Thompson & Clarke, Los Angeles, is spending a few days with us.
—a large load of provisions for the Chinamen at work on the water ditch was forwarded to them this morning.
—Anaheim Lodge, F. & A. M., hold a very important meeting on next Saturday evening.
—Fifty pupils were in attendance at the opening of the Primary school yesterday.
—the railroad magnates passed through town last night on their return from San Diego.
