Houghton will arrive by this evening's train, and will address the people of Anaheim on the political aspects of the present campaign, this evening. We beg to make an explanation. The thermometrical record, which we present our readers every week, is kept by T. A. Saxton, Esq., who resides about two miles from town. This will explain the apparent discrepancy in the figures heretofore given, there being a vast difference between the temperature of the town and the country outside "of the fence." A man named Rogers, who lives somewhere in the Santiago Caifon had two fine American heifers stolen from his pasturage the other day. He found their hides and heads at one of our slaughter houses. It seems that the butcher bought the cattle from Francisco Armento. A suit has been entered by Rogers, in Judge Bailey's court, against the buyer for the value of the cattle, and a warrant has been issued for the arrest of the thief. Constable Davis is after him. One of the most popular nominations made by the Independent Convention is that of J. W. Gillette, for County Recorder. We do not believe that there is a business man in this community who will not give him a cordial support. The duties of his office have been faithfully administered, and we know or several instances where he has saved to individuals considerable money and trouble, by pointing out to them errors in documents left in his office to be placed on record. As the Democratic Convention failed to accord a legislative nominee to this part of the county, we believe that the people will give Messrs. Hazard and Bailey, the Independent nominees for the Assembly, an almost unanimous vote. There can be no question as to the fitness or ability of either of these gentlemen. Of Mr. Hazard we shall speak hereafter. To those who have not the pleasure of an acquaintance with Mr. Bailey, we would state that he is a man whose reputation is as unspotted as snow, and is beloved by all who know him. There never was a vote cast for a more honest, incorruptible man than Alexander Bailey. In conversation with Democrats, Republicans and Independents, we have not yet found one who did not bear favorable testimony to the Independent nominee. We feel assured of his election. About noon yesterday a terrible accident occurred at Anaheim Landing, which resulted in the drowning of three men. It seems that six employees of the Lighter Company were returning from the anchorage, and in crossing the bar their boat capsized, precipitating them into the water. They all succeeded in reaching the boat, but a heavy wave washed them off. Two of the crew again reached the boat and clung to it until they were rescued by a crew from the shore, who had witnessed the accident. Of the other four, one, Charley Wilson, swam ashore, and the other three disappeared beneath the waters. One of the drowned was Jack Westerling, for a long time a resident of the Landing. The other two had only arrived from San Francisco a few weeks ago, and were comparative strangers. None of the bodies have as yet been discovered. This is the first fatal accident that has occurred at the Landing since it was announced. ANNOUNCEMENTS For Constable. J. H. Co., requesting the resignation of the former as agent of the Western Union in this town: “This change has been rendered necessary partly by complaints made by citizens of Anaheim, I assure you that the change herein made is an unpleasant one to make, and is only done to defend our interests.” In reference to the above, the following unsolicited testimonial from the citizens of Anaheim and others will explain itself: ANAHEIM, August 3, 1875. H. D. POLHEMUS, Esq. Dear Sir—We, the undersigned merchants and others, having occasion to do business with the Western Union Telegraph Company, desire to express our great regret at the recent action of the Superintendent of the Southern Division of the W. U. T. Co., in removing you from the charge of the office in Anaheim without, as we believe, any good or sufficient cause. During the years in which you have had charge of this office we have always found you prompt and attentive to the wishes and interests of those having business with the Western Union Telegraph Co., and faithful to your duties as an employee of that company: Signed, A. Langenberger, Goodman & Rimpau, P. Davis & Bro., Heimann & George, A. Heimann, M. Calisher & Co., Dreyfus & Co., John Fisher, M. Nebelung, Wm. M. Knox. A Card. To Messrs. A. Langenberger, Goodman & Rimpau, P. Davis & Bro., Heimann & George, M. Calisher & Co., Dreyfus & Co., and others. GENTLEMEN:—I desire to return my heartfelt thanks for your kind testimonial published in yesterday's Gazette. In my former connection with the Western Union Telegraph Co. I have endeavored, at all times, to attend strictly to my duty and to deserve the good wishes of the business community; and would state that I have been appointed agent of the Atlantic船队 again reached on the boat and clung to it until they were rescued by a crew from the shore, who had witnessed the accident. This is the first fatal accident that has occurred at the Landing since it was first established, eleven years ago. [Since the above was in type, we learn that the bodies of Jack Westerling and — Boyd have been recovered. Judge Clark, acting Coroner, and a jury, proceeded to the Landing this afternoon, for the purpose of holding an inquest.] We give all our Bookbinding to M. W. Perry, Bookbinder, Temple Street, Los-Angeles, where he binds all kinds of books, pamphlets, magazines and music books. He does his work well and at reasonable prices. If any one here has work in his line, we advise them to give him a call. INCARABLES RESTORED. Do not despair because your physician shakes his head. Professional opinions are not infallible; and they are never wider of the mark than when they pronounce chronic Dyspnea an incurable malady. To mitigate its pangs, the faculty usually prescribe air exercise and brandy. The first two are God's medicine; the last is a Satanic poison. The only medicine needed in Dyspnea and its complications is Dr. J. Walker’s California Vinegar Bitters, the great vegetable tonic of the age. ANECDOTE OF COL. BAKER. All old Californians will remember Col. Baker, who, in his day, was one of the ablest politicians and stump speakers in the State. In looking over “The Drawer,” in Harper’s Magazine, for August, we find the following anecdote: The story is one of Mr. Lincoln’s: Col. Baker was very courteous to ladies, always treating them with great politeness and attention. He was starting on a journey at one time when a lady was placed in his care by an acquaintance. Now, the Colonel knew nothing whatever of this lady, but she proved to be a very pleasant traveling companion, and he made her as comfortable as possible in the old stage-coach. On the next morning they stopped for breakfast in Galena, and while that meal was being prepared they were shown into a parlor on the second floor. Here the lady seated herself by an open window looking out on the street, while the Colonel paced the floor, with his hands folded behind him, as was his custom, for he always seemed as restless as a caged bear, when confined in a room. Other passengers were in the parlor, and they were speaking of some late defaulter, some blaming him, others saying he had done what he could to save his credit. W.I.RUMBLE announces himself as a candidate for County Surveyor at the ensuing election. For County Tax Collector. M.KREMER announces himself as a candidate for the office of Tax Collector at the ensuing election. For County Tax Collector.
