Ozias Linley (according to archdeacon Sinclair, from which we quote a few paragraphs), "Voltaire gives the best possible description of our modern pulpit oratory. 'He divided that which required no division; proved that which needed no proof; put our Liar." Mr. Dickens, in one of his reprinted places, very faithfully and humourously describes "Our Liar," a capture to be found in every village and hamlet in the world; indeed, so truly did he depict him that when reading it I imagined that the bore I knew best must have sat for the picture. There is another character equally ubiquitous with the bore, and possessing many of his qualities, which I shall make the subject of the present sketch. I shall write of "Our Liar." Everybody knows a liar. You see them, meet them, every day. Go where you will, on the cara, in a steamboat, in a saloon, to a circus, a town meeting, a public assemblage of any kind, or anywhere, and you will find "Our Liar" the centre of a little coterie. He is an orator in his way, and very eloquent. He attracts men like sugar does flies. You may not believe in him; you may despise him; but you want to hear him, and when he done you will pronounce him the greatest liar you ever saw. There are many kinds of liars. There is the profound liar, who is generally an old man with white hair and sober mien. He walks about with a cane, and daily sits in the post-office or grocery. He tells the most marvelous stories of what he saw and did when a young man, and speaks with such apparent candor and truthfulness, that you are compelled to say to yourself: "I cannot believe his story, but there certainly must be some truth in it." Then there is the shallow liar; he is the fellow with expressionless face and big mouth; he lives to lie; he never deceive anybody, however. He is as transparent as a clean window-pane. He never told the truth in his life, purposely, and you never expected him to; he lies about the commonest affairs of life. He has seen a great many wonderful things that nobody else ever saw. It was his peculiar good fortune to see a white squirrel with three eyes that no other human being ever saw. He once had in his possession a hen named "Betty," that raised six orphan pigs, and if he had that hen now he wouldn't take a million dollars for her; no sir, he wouldn't! When that hen died there wasn't a dry eye in the village where he lived. Owing to a singular streak of good luck years ago, he saw at Buck County, Pennsylvania, a man at a circus swallow a boon constrictor eight feet long. He wouldn't have believed it could have been done if he hadn't seen it with his own eyes. Storms of the Big Squash.—The big squash of Amherst Agricultural College Farm, which grew so stoutly that it burst several iron cages, and finally listed 4,120 pounds (and of which a plaster cast is preserved), had enough roots underground to find it for its herculean work. The squash vine was washed out with its roots by the continued use of a garden hose for twenty-four hours, and the whole root system was spread out on a floor and carefully measured. The main branch was twelve or fifteen feet long and aggregated some 4,000. One of the seventy nodal roots, four feet long, had 480 branches, and a most careful estimate of the ramifications of the rootlets, based upon the actual measurement of the division, showed that the squash vine had between fifteen and nineteen miles of roots. Reckoning the number of days it had been growing (fifty-two), it was found that it must have been on an average 1,000 feet per day, and on favorable days about 2,000 feet. Colonel Clark, the President of the Agricultural College, says that while this growth was going on, and the big squash was expanding and lifting its enormous burden, great drops of sweat stood all over in great rind, proving that it felt the great task imposed upon it. In reviewing the business for the port work we remark but little change as compared with the previous four weeks. The general market shows a fair amount of business transactions without special activity in any department. The late storms have not proved at disastrous to the crops so was at least appreciated, and all losses will probably be made good by the enhanced prices obtained. This had the effect of delaying harvesting for a short time. Grain comes forward very quickly, the receipts to date having been naturally light. One of the reasons given is that salads are made to agents of purchasers in the interior and a portion of the grain does not find its way to the city at all, but is loaded at points up the Bay, and no record is made until the ships clear at this port. There is at present in this harbor nearly 50,000 tons of disengaged grain vessels, with a larger number of ships on the way than at any previous time this year. Freights are now raising at 23 6d @ 23 10s. for first-class grain-ships to ports direct. The market price for wheat has improved in sympathy with foreign rates, which will be found under the proper head, and is now firm at our quotations with an upward tendency. Flour has also advanced in consequence of the increased price of wheat, and although transactions are light, and we have constant large receipts from Oregon, the market has a firm tone and the demand is good. Barley is also in good demand at an advance, the receipts thus far of new having been quite small. The supply of Oats is fair, Oregon still keeping up her supplies. Prices are nearly stationary as last quoted. Corn is without change, the demand and supply being nearly equally balanced. The market for Bye is steady with light supplies and small transactions. New potatoes are arriving freely and the supply fully equals the demand, which is large; Prices are gradually seeking lower levels. Onions are quite plenty and prices low, but steady. Receipts of wool have fallen off; the demand is good; we report large transactions in both spring and fall clips at fair prices for the fall, which is of very poor quality and undesirable, and good prices for the spring clip which is generally of unusually good quality, especially for all Northern fleece, which is said to be quite above the average. Dairy Produce continues to bring good prices, the demand being unusually good and our markets not overstocked with home products, while receipts from Eastern markets have been quite light. Fruits of all seasonable varieties are in active demand and command high prices as compared with former seasons; the supply is moderate: our quotations have a wide range, as prices fluctuate daily according to the supply. WHEAT—There is but little offering in this market of either old or new. The price has advanced both here and in Europe. The latest Liverpool quotations are given as follows: Average California wheat, $9@9 3d; Club 98 3d@9 8d. The present quotations in this market are for choice milling $1 65@1 72%; and for good shipping grades $1 62%@1 65%.
