DETROIT CURRENCY. From the Free Press. Long John Wentworth makes one plug hat two him nine years, but he changes shirt once in two weeks. Barnarck receives an average of ten threatening letters per week, but nothing prevents him from taking his lager at the regular hour. When a snow storm drives a farmer out of his potato patch May 1st, it is about time to offer the whole confounded country for twenty shillings and a shot-gun. Queen Victoria will not have a hand-sommer woman than herself around court, and the consequence is a collection of females as much uglier than Susan B. Anthony as can be imagined. When three hundred men will turn out to ride after a poor, sickly fox, and hurrah and yell and jump fences and break suspender buttons, Dio Lewis needn't be blowing around that Americans are a melancholy race. A Delaware man married a woman because she was deaf, and he thought she'd keep her tongue still. So she did, but when he fell into the well and yelled himself hoarse trying to make her hear, he wished that she had ears a foot long and could hear a whisper a mile away. "Billy," said one boy to another on West street, this morning, "Sh! do you ace that gentleman going there?" "Ych." "He's a big un, you bet," was the confidential whisper. "He keeps sheets wrapped all around his furniture." A Nelson street woman being asked if a neighbor was slovenly, cautiously replied: "I can't say as to that, but she gave an old woman one of her old wrappers the other day, and she boiled it up and got grease enough out of it to make a gallon of soap." It Will. Do It. They were married last fall and they hadn't had one cross word or a sour look, when, the other night, he moved the cook stove into the alanty and called her to hold the pipe up while he gently knocked the joints together. She smiled sweetly as she replied: "Yes, my dear," but five minutes hadn't passed before he yelled out: "Durn it! I thought you knew something!" And she threw two joints of pike at him. Catching a Canon Ball. A very singular exhibition was given recently at the Jardin Mabile. There has been performing at Polies Bergeres a man named Holtum, an American, who has a canon ball fired at him and catches the ball in his hands. This prodigious feat was witnessed nightly, and although the actors present avowed there was no trick; Pierre Veron, of the Monde Hlustre, would not believe it. He said that the canon ball must be thrown to Holtum from the stage. The latter made a bet of 5,000 francs that he would perform the feat under condition which left no room to doubt, and when the bet was taken Veron designated Mabile as the place for the trial. All the journalists of Paris were invited, and they found Holtum there before his canon. It was examined with minute care, and the heavy ball passed from hand to hand. "I am no longer in my own house," said Holtum; "You are master here, and you must watch over all the arrangements." Having carefully aimed and lashed his canon, it was charged, and Holtum took his place against a plank target some ten yards away. This was to show that the ball was solid, and the force of the powder strong enough to send it through the plank. Holtum got the aim of his gun, and then placed his head in a certain position against the plank, giving the order to fire. The ball just grazed the hair, and broke through the plank, rolling some twenty yards further on. The same ball was picked up by the journalists, who again charged the canon and sent home the ball; and this time Holtum caught the ball in his hands as neatly as he does nightly upon the stage. He won his bet, and no one seemed disposed to accept his offer of $3,000 to any one who would perform the same astounding feat. The physical force required must be enormous, but Holtum showed his strength by tossing up canon balls as if they were so many oranges. The only precautions taken are very simple; he wears very thick leather gloves, and covers his breast with many thicknesses of thin paper to form a sort of cuirass. This looks to me like a very dangerous feat, and particularly the first part of it, where Holtum places his head against the target, half an inch below where the ball will probably strike. If the powder should chance to be defective, some day there might be an accident. SAN FRANCISCO The market has been without a whole volume of usual average price since the prospect proved in earnest as fruit distracts reports and finds better than those formed place of the State at 75 cents harvesting been commenced State. The tide is down in upon month of May. Wheat receipts have shaded off tations. Flour port and for hour Barley has been at unchanged with fair long market is partly without essentia but sufficient to break wheat is fine prices are owed with a light denier is nearly free; are in prices. The old out of market. The market is owed of wool have faired though sales have tendency is to show weak bulk of the Spring giving satisfactory quality of the coil for the season. And being poor much neglected slowly even at this it is offered. Due in quite freely and fair prices constantly arrives prices of buttery. Receipts of ore increasing there is an active realized. WHEAT—THE ACTIVE. There are prices, which fare there will not movement until on the market. Of tonnage in the 2000 tons; but it being quite grain carrying past three months freights for the 125. This takes IT WILL DO IT. They were married last fall and they hadn't had one cross word or a sour look, when, the other night, he moved the cook stove into the alianty and called her to hold the pipe up while he gently knocked the joints together. She smiled sweetly as she replied: "Yes, my dear," but five minutes hadn't passed before he yelled out: "Durn it! I thought you knew something!" And she threw two joints of pipe at him and replied: "I want you to understand that we are strangers from this hour." OLD TIMES. While some men on a street car were reviving old recollections one of them inquired: "Does any one remember the date of the cholera season?" "I can find out in half an hour," replied a man who had hitherto preserved silence. "I've got a note of $60 signed by your father, in that very year, and that'll give the exact day and date!" There wasn't any further talk about olden days. MAKING PREPARATIONS. As two school girls were posting a letter the other morning one of them said: "As I was telling you, ma and I are going to the White Mountains, to be gone all summer. I'm going to have a gray dress and a green dress, and a blue dress and a new hat and new shoes, and ma says I'll probably find a beau; and she says I've got to commence being dignified, and I left my gum at home and shan't chew another bit nor carry any more jawbreakers to school." NONE FOR HIM.—Ish dere some ladder here for me? inquired a German at the general delivery window of the post-office, Saturday. "No—none here," was the reply. "Whell, dot is queer," he continued, getting his head into the window; "my neighbor gets somedimes dree ledders in one day, und I get none. I bays more daxes as he does, und I haf never got one ladder yet. How comes dose things?" A NEW TRICK.—"Big Jack," the newsboy, looked into a Michigan avenue saloon where a dozen men were playing cards, and standing in the door he called out: "There's a woman here who wants to see a fellow named——" "That's my wife." muttered several different individuals in chorus, and they tumbled out of the back door into the alley as if carried in the arms of a tornado. THE PATENT ELEPHANT.—An elephant in Calcutta had a disease in his eyes. For three days he had been completely blind. His owner, an engineer officer, asked the doctor if he could do anything to relieve the poor animal. The doctor said he would try the nitrate of silver, which was a remedy commonly applied to similar diseases in the human eye. The large animal was ordered to lie down, and at first, on the application of the remedy, raised a most extraordinary roar at the acute pain which it occasioned. The effect, however was wonderful. The eye was in a manner restored, and the animal could partially see. The early history of petroleum is curious. Known and employed for burning from remote antiquity in the Old World, no process for its purification had been devised, and it was therefore at best but an indifferent and cheaper substitute for animal and vegetable oils. The first attempts to refine it for commercial purposes are believed to have been made by Young, of Glasgow, in 1847, on petroleum got from Derbyshire, in England, from which he prepared a lubricating oil, and it was the exhaustion of this supply for the extraction of oils from coal. Meanwhile in the United States, the existence of sources of mineral oil had been known to the Indians of New York and Pennsylvania, who prized it as a medicine, for which purpose it became familiar to the European colonists under the name of Seneca-oil. It appears to have been an object of research to the aborigines ages ago, since in the oil regions of Western Pennsylvania are found pits or wells apparently dug for the purpose of collecting the oil, carefully timbered, and affording from the growth of the forest upon the site evidence of an antiquity from 500 to 1000 years. As early as 1819, in boring for brine on the Muskingum River in Ohio, from a depth of 400 feet were obtained large quantities of mineral oil, which was a source of great annoyance to the salt-makers. At time attempts were made to use the oil for illumination, but from the want of proper lamps, it was not found to be adapted to the purpose. In 1854 the successful manufacture of oils from coal caused attention to be drawn to the possibility of utilizing these native oils, and the Pennsylvania Oil Company was formed for the purpose of manufacturing the petroleum found at Oil Creek, in Venango County, Pennsylvania. The chemical investigation of the material was committed to Professor B. Silliman, Jun., and his report to the company, which appeared in April, 1855, has been the point of departure for the immense industry of petroleum which has grown within the last twenty years. In this report was described the conversation of the crude petroleum by fractional distillation into products differing in density and in volatility, the manufacture from it of a burning oil of great illuminating power, of an oil capable of supporting a low temperature and fitted for lubrication, and also of paraffine. He further showed the importance of distillation in a current of highly heated steam, and noticed the breaking-up of heavier into lighter oils. The Petroleum Industry. A HAPPY FAMILY—A Richmond, Ind., newspaper vouches for the truth of the following story: "The lion had not yet been observed to lie down with the lamb, but something equal to it happened. A white cat with four young kittens set up housekeeping in a box where there happened to be two young rats. Instead of devouring them, as would have been natural, she adopted them and afforded them the same nourishment that she supplied to her kittens. One of the kittens and one of the rats died. Yesterday we called to see the happy family and found the three kittens and the rat drawing their sustenance in happy promiscuousness. The mother cat hastened frequent carrasses upon her little ones until she cann’t in for a full alarm. It seemed to enjoy the love link and responded in an affectionate manner as possible for a rat. After all, as a matter of prudence, that young rat had better move out before his tail goes too long." "Ah," said a teacher, "ah, Caroline Jones, what do you think you would have been without your good father and pious mother?" "I suppose, mum," said Caroline, who was very much struck with the soft appeal, "I suppose, mum, as I should be a harpian." Two chums desiring to make themselves comfortable had a stove put up in their chamber. One bought the stove and the other paid the mason to have a hole cut in the chimney. They broke up housekeeping the other day, and divided the effects. One had the stove and the other the hole. A JUMP FOR LIFE.—An exchange relates the following incident, which recently occurred in a Western town, and is one of the most remarkable examples of presence of mind we have ever heard of: A jump for life was what a man decided to take while at work on the pile driver at the Green Bay elevator. He occupied a position way up aloft, to work the hammer, which occasionally needed attention. While in this unenviable position, a huge pile was drawn up by the machine, the hammer was up, ready to drop on call, when the whole pile-driving machine began to sway. The man aloft saw that it was going over. He took in the situation at glance. If he remained where he was, it was to mark his life in the fall with the paniform hummer, weighing twenty-two hundred pounds, an immense pile twenty or thirty feet long, and the largest timber of harmachine. It all flushed through his mind in an instant, and turning upon the ladder, in made a leap for his life, landing upon the platform of the freight dock, thirty feet below. The weight hammer went down through the dock, and the machine went over on its side, but the man was safe. His jump saved his life, and, aside from a little soreness in his back, he felt no injury, and resumed his work next day. The local of the Lockport Journal asserts that he recently saw two grasshoppers each three inches long in a bottle. He ought to sign the pledge. A slow man can run in debt; but, naturally enough, the feat is oftener accomplished by "fast" men. SAN FRANCISCO MARKET. The market for the week under review has been without special animation, though the whole volume of trade has been up to the usual average for the season. The outlook is to the prospect of the crops having much improved in nearly all the grain growing as well as fruit districts, as we gather from the latest reports and from a general sampling up of the results we may predict in all respects a two-third crop, which, to say the least, is much better than the best authority was able to predict during the month of April. The best informed place estimate of the surplus wheat of the State at 500,000 tons and the surplus for the Coast at 500,000 tons. Though quite early yet harvesting of both barley and wheat has been commenced in several counties in this state. The tide of immigration still continues to flow in upon us, the arrivals for the past month of May footing up about 15,000 persons. Wheat receipts continue light, and prices have shaded off slightly from last week's quotations. Flour is in fair demand both for export and for home consumption; prices steady. Barley has been quite active for the week at unchanged rates. Oats are firm with fair inquiry but light stock; the market is partly supplied from Oregon. Corn is without essential change in price, stock light but sufficient to meet all present demands. Buckwheat is firm but in limited supply, and fair prices are obtainable. Rye is scarce, but with a light demand. The old crop of potatoes is nearly exhausted. New are arriving freely, are in active request, and bring good prices. The old crop of onions are entirely out of market and new are plenty and cheap. The market is nearly bare of hops. Receipts of wool have fallen off very materially and although sales have been large yet the present tendency is to lower prices—the market East showing weakness. Prices realized for the bulk of the Spring clip to date have been fair, giving satisfaction to producers. The general quality of the clip has been above the average for the season. Fall wool is in light stock, and being poor and undesirable, has been much neglected, consequently working off but slowly even at the extreme low prices at which it is offered. Dairy produce has been coming in quite freely because the demand was good and fair prices obtainable, but with supplies constantly arriving from the East by rail, the prices of butter and eggs have declined slightly. Receipts of fruit of seasonable varieties are increasing daily, and for most kinds there is an active demand, and good prices are realized. WHEAT—The market is quite dull and inactive. There has been a slight falling off in prices, which favors the buyers somewhat, but there will not probably be any particular movement until the offering of the new crops on the market. There is quite a large amount of tonnage in the harbor disengaged, say 50,000 tons, but freights are looking up a little, it being quite difficult to charter first-class grain carrying ships at rates current for the past three months. The probable advance on freights for the new crops will be from $s to $12s. This, taken together with extreme low acknowledges no rival. Most business men look forward hopefully to a time when they may retire to the quietude of private life, and enjoy the rest widths as competence attests. Contact addresses, the most interesting enquiries, but literal preparation of the Diamond Palace, while no higher distinctions than he enjoys now, without attention in the world based on diamond and pearl quarches, but honest by the confidence that the crowned heads of Europe repose in him as a contemplation. But the Colonel is appreciated at home more precisely, if possible, then he is thronged. San Francisco is flattered that he has chosen his home here—give our lost lot for the benefit of his extensive experience and business connections. The business the Colonel has built up here in a short time is based upon a general recognition of the facts that his judgment and taste in the selection of goods are superior to those of any other dealer in the city; that he seizes the usual tricks of the trade—such as representing his wares to be what they are not—that his prices are low and uniform; that his bearing toward visitors is invariably courteous. Not only so, but the public delights to compliment a man who has won his way by courage and perseverance to no honorable place. Hence the Diamond Palace is always crowded with purchasers and visitors. Indeed an enlargement of the premises has become an absolute necessity. In order to display his goods—especially the new styles of alverware now arriving and to arrive, an extension of shelf room twenty-dve feet toward one of the building has been determined on, and accomplished fact in a few days. The area be finished to correspond with the front, and though it will afford sufficient room for the present, will soon require still further extension. If the Colonel's business grows as it has heretofore, and as we hope it will for all time to come. A visit to the Diamond Palace will amply repay for the time it takes. Especially do we urge our Eastern visitors to call and see this world's wonder. It is easy to find, being located in the Russe House Block, San Francisco, a few doors north of the Montgomery street entrance.-S. P. Bulletin. Safe Investment. The Pacific Coast Twelve Per Cent. Consult, in consequence of the many advantages offered, in regard to investment, interest and dividends. o much uncertainty exists in connection with nearly all mining and other speculative companies, there is something very assuring in an incorporation which not only guarantees twelve per cent. per year to all stockholders, but provides for the honest payment of dividends. The Twelve per cent. Consult were incorporated on the 12th of February last for the purpose of transacting a general business in buying and selling mining properties, city real estate, agricultural and other lands, in the States and Territories of the Pacific Coast. Determined to do only a strictly legitimate business, the Directors rejected the old method in vogue by mining companies generally, and adopted a new one which secures all parties who become shareholders equal advantages in the business transaction. By the provisions of the by-laws. A SINKING FUND is to be made of one-half the proceeds of the total capital stock, which shall be sold on the joint account of the original co-owners. The stock will be classified as follows: Sinking Fund, mining property, city real estate, and agricultural lands. Before any stock is issued in any class, the property will be applauded by the owners, and the stated value entered upon the books of the Company. Shares for not more than fifty per cent. of the valuation will be issued in any of the classes, and the amount of shares offered for sale in any one class, exclusive of the sales of stock in the Sinking Fund, will not be allowed to exceed 20,000 if sold at less than the par value of a dollar per share. GRANTERS OF SAFETY. In regard to the Sinking Fund, which will constitute fifty per cent. of the par value of the stock, all monies received as the proceeds of sales of stock on account of the fund will be deposited with some solvent banking institution, which pays interest on deposits invested in interest bearing stocks, bonds and other securities, which can be realized in thirty days, and in no case it will be lawful for the directors or trustees to issue any money of the Sinking Fund in the purchase of stocks, bonds or other securities of any incorporation whatever, which shall have failed to pay interest or dividends for a period of six months preceding any proposed investment pertaining to the Sinking Fund of the company. PAYMENT OF INTEREST. The by-laws further make positive provision for the payment of interest monthly on all stock issued in each class at the rate of twelve per cent. per annum, payable on the 5th day of each month. Another important concession is that any shareholder has the option to take part in payment at par value in any class that may be offered for interest at par value in any class until the total stock of the Sinking Fund shall have been sold and paid out as provided by the by-laws. Indeed, so secure is the plan of the company that in no event capital stock of the company should be sold immediately; and the Fund invested as provided, the proceeds would be given interest for eight years and a half on the total capital stock. Perhaps no other company in the world has ever been able to present so brilliant a certainty. DIVIDENDS.
