Schenck positively denies that he knows anything about draw-pointer. All great man should be modest.
Schenck for royalty seems to be declining in England when an English paper will coily refer to "Bill the Third."
Mrs. Senazor Sümmer that was, is soon to be Mrs. Henry Jones that is. Jones is a clerk in the New York Custom House.
There are cracks in the walls of the new Custom House in Chicago, and it only needs the climbing ivy to make a pictureque ruin.
Mark Twain could have married sixty-five different girls for love, but he waited till he could love one with a coal mine in her own name.
A Chicago clairvoyant says that Charlie Ross is in Heaven. She was determined to locate him where no detective could strike his trail.
The Milwaukee paper which asserts that there are forty-four yards of trimming on a lady's bonnet willfully exaggerates. There are but thirty-eight.
A newspaper reporter who forgot to address Donaldson, the balloonist, as "Professor," had the doors locked on him and was chased out of the yard by a dog.
An old citizen of Vermont observes that when a post-office clerk gets too high-nosed to lick a stamp on to a letter it is fine that the country had a change of administration.

A Warning to Lazy Husbands.
The Danbury News says: Ladies who have husbands who are neglectful in supplying them with kindlings should carefully study the experience of a Davidson street sister. All her married life she has had unabashed struggle with her husband to keep herself supplied with wood, and the greater part of the time she has been obliged to depend on her own deftness with the axe, and any one who has seen a woman handle an axe knows what a dreadful thing it is. Two months ago she begged of him not to go away without leaving her some kindlings. He said he wouldn't. But he finally did. Then she hit upon a plan. She had four dozen clothes pins. She took one dozen of them for starting the fire, and found that it worked admirably. The next day she used another dozen, and so she continued until the four dozen were gone. Then she went to the store and purchased another four dozen—having put them in the bill. When they were gone she repeated the errand. She said no more to him about kindlings. For ten years she had kept up the battle, and now she was tired and sick of heart. He could go his way and she would go hers—patiently, uncomplainingly—until the end would come.
On Monday he signified at the store that he would like to settle his account. The bill was made out and handed him. He glanced down the items. As he advanced along the column his face began to work. First his eyes slowly enlarged, then his mouth gradually opened, caused by the dropping of his lower jaw; and wrinkles formed on his forehead. One third down the column he formed his lips as if to whistle. Halfway down he said:
Gracious!
A little further on he said:
Thunder!
Four more lines were taken in and he spoke again:
By the jumping jupiter!
Then he read on, smiting his thigh vigorously, and gave vent to various expressions of the liveliest nature. Finally he threw the bill down.
I say, Benson, look here; this bill can't be mine: you've got me mixed up with some laundry.
That's your bill, sir, said the grocer, smiling pleasantly.
I tell you it can't be, persisted the Davidson street man, beginning to look

DR. HALL says that a person shouldn't take over two drinks of water per day, but water doesn't cost anything, and if a man wants to drink a barrel an hour he'll do it in spite of all the Dr. Halls in America.
A MAN digging a well in New Jersey came across a hoop-skirt eighteen feet beneath the surface of the ground, and it flew up and struck him across the nose just as naturally as if he had come across it in an alley.
THE AGE OF HUMBROS.—A lady living on Park Place sent her boy to a drug store with a tin pail the other day to get a quart of soda water, and when he returned and she tasted it she leaned over a gate and said to a neighbor:
"Well, I've about come to the conclusion that one might rake the world with a fine tooth comb and not find an honest man in it."
A BOY'S ENTERPRISE.—A boy was around one of the hotels yesterday to get a job of blacking boots, when a guest naked him:
"Sonay, did you hear that the world was coming to an end to tomorrow?"
"Great snakes! No!" exclaimed the lad, instantly becoming excited; "where can a feller buy some tickets?"
A Bob-Tail Incident.
The St. Louis Democrat is responsible for the following, which is good in its way:
"Driver, why don't you stop when I ring the bell?" The lady's eyes flashed fire as she gazed through the opening in the door upon the Jehu of the hob-tail.
"Did you ring the bell, ma'am?"
"Yes, I rang it twice, you stupid."
If you had rung it only once, I would have stopped, but as two negatives make an affirmative, so two pulls of a car-bell means go ahead."
"Well, now just see; while you are talking, you have passed the crossing. Why don't you stop?"
The driver instantly turned the brake, and the bob-tail came to a halt.
"Do you suppose I'm going to get out here in all this mud?"
"I will proceed, then, to the next crossing!"
"Yes, and I must walk all the way back, I suppose."
"Just as you please, madam; you can walk or ride."
"How can I ride, I would like to know."
"Take the car going east."
No, I intend to get off at the crossing in this car, if I have to go to the end of the road and come back."
Graceous:
A little further on he said:
Thunder!
Four more lines were taken in and he spoke again:
By the jumping jupiter!
Then he read on, smiting his thigh vigorously, and gave vent to various expressions of the liveliest nature. Finally he threw the bill down.
I say, Benson, look here; this bill can't be mine: you've got me mixed up with some laundry.
That's your bill, sir, said the grocer, smiling pleasantly.
I tell you it can't be, persisted the Davidson street man, beginning to look scared. Why, here's fifty-five dozen clothes pins in a two months' bill. What on earth do you take me for—a four-story laundry?
But it is your bill. Your wife can explain it to you. She ordered the pins.
My wife: gasped the fortunate man.
Yes, sir.
The debtor clutched the bill, jammed it into his pocket, and hurried straight home. He bolted into the house without any abatement of speed, and flinging the paper on the table before his wife, knocked his hat on the back of his head, and said:
Martha Ann Johnson, what does this mean? There are fifty dozen clothes pins in Benson's bill for the last two months, and he says you ordered every blessed one of them. And so I did, said she demurely.
W-h-at! Fifty-five dozen clothes pins in two months! and he shot down into a chair as if a freight car had fallen atop him. Fifty-five dozen clothes pins in two months, he howled.
Will a just heaven stand that?
I tell you, you needn't stare at me that way. Reuben Wheeler Johnson, nor go calling unto heaven with your impiousness. I ordered them clothes pins myself, and I have burnt every one of em in that there stove, because you were too alfired lazy to get a stick of wood. And I declare, before I'll be bothered jawing and fighting to get you to cut wood. I'll burn up every clothes pin in the land, and you shall pay for them, if you have to sell the shirt on your back to do it. So now!
And Mrs. Johnson with a face like scarlet, snatched up the broom, and went to sweeping the carpet as if every flake of dust was a red-hot coal, while the unhappy Mr. Johnson hastened to the store and paid the bill. And before dark that night he had a half cord of wood sawed, split and piled up ready for use.
A Remorseful Dog.
The following interesting letter is published in the London Spectator:
"Being accustomed to walk out before breakfast with two skye terriers, it was my custom to wash their feet in a tub, kept for the purpose in the garden, whenever the weather was wet. One morning, when I took up the dog to carry him to the tub, he bit me so severely that I was obliged to let him go. No sooner was the dog at liberty than he ran down to the kitchen and hid himself. For three days he refused food, declined to go out with any of the family and appeared very dejected, with a distressed and unusual expression of countenance.
"On the third morning, however, upon..."
The driver instantly turned the brake,
and the bob-tail came to a halt.
"All right, madam; I shall be pleased to have your company on the trip."
"I am not in a hurry, and I'll do it, just because I want you street-car drivers to understand that when the bell is rung by a lady, whether with one pull or a thousand pulls, you have got to stop. And you can't put me down in the mud, neither. And you needn't be saucy when I complain of you for neglecting your duty. I won't have it."
"Look here, Susan, you shouldn't put on such air; if you have been promoted to the post of chambermaid in a second-class hash-house. I remember the time when you took to mud like a young pig—that was when I kept house, and you were my maid-of-all work."
"Stop the car! I want to get out."
A man in Tennessee has brought an action for divorce because on his going to a fortune-teller, she told him that a fortune of thirty thousand was coming to him next week, and that under the influence of said statement, he gave his wife fifty dollars for new clothes; and that the fortune didn't come, and he found out that his wife had been to the fortune-teller before hand and "fixed up the thing;" wherefore he demands a dissolution of the marriage tie.
Poor Irish woman with six children to railroad ticket agent; "Please sir, give a poor wilddy with six orphan children a ticket to Milwaukee!" Ticket agent: "What have I to do with your orphan children? I ain't their father, am I?" Woman: "That you isn't, sir; their father was a dacent man."
According to the last census in England and Wales, the females of the population outnumbered the males by 500,000; but above the age of twenty-five the males exceed the females in number. While there were 400,000 widowers, there were 878,000 widows. Above the age of ninety, females number two to every male.
No sooner was the dog at liberty than he ran down to the kitchen and bid himself. For three days he refused food, declined to go out with any of the family and appeared very dejected, with a distressed and unusual expression of countenance.
"On the third morning, however, upon returning with the other dog, I found him sitting by the tub, and upon coming toward him he immediately jumped into it and sat down in the water. After pretending to wash his legs, he jumped out as happy as possible, and from that moment recovered his usual spirits.
"There appears in this instance to have been a clear process of reasoning, accompanied by acute feeling, going on in the dog's mind from the moment he hit me until the moment he hit upon a plan of showing his regret and making repation for his fault. It evidently occurred to him that I attached great importance to his foot-bath, and if he could convince me that his contrition was sincere, and that he was willing to submit to the process without a murmur, I should be satisfied. The dog, in this case, reasoned with perfect accuracy, and from his own premises deduced a legitimate conclusion which the result justified."
The Rev. Edward Irving, the popular minister of the National Scotch Church in London, once managed to inveigle into his church, by talking to him about leather, a cobbler who professed infidelity.
Irving's father was a tanner, and his acquaintance with leather was of old standing. "What do you ken about leather!" was the first word from the cobbler that indicated a breach in his impregnable disdain of the clergy. As the discourse advanced, the shoemaker exclaimed, "Odds! you are a decent kind of a fellow." Do you preach? Finally he was induced to go to church, and he defended himself for so doing by pronouncing the opinion on Irving: "He's a sensible monk, he kens about leather."
Now let us talk about your business affairs," said a sharp Connecticut girl to a young fellow; after he had proposed marriage to her in a long address filled with expressions of passionate love.
Everything is good in its season.
SAN FRANCISCO MARKET.
Business for the week past has been exceedingly quiet in all departments of trade, owing, in a great measure to the unsettled feeling in regard to stop prospects, for the approaching season. Merchants from the interior express a feeling of doubt as to future ability to pay, in case they should purchase literally, and in order to be perfectly safe they may not repeatedly at present, till the future shall decide to the result; on the other hand, the merchants here for the same reason of doubt feel hardly like urging sales of goods on unwilling purchases. The sale of immigration seems to be at the feud, far never since the settlement of the State had there been such influx of population as is now pouring in daily from all quarters, both by sea and rail. It is to be hoped that sufficient encouragement will be afforded in the way of employment, that all may be induced to remain as permanent settlers on the coast, as there certainly is room for all, and one of the greatest needs the coast has experienced has been the want of a working population. In order to meet the wants of many of the new comers, our merchants have established in this city a Bureau of Imigration, having in part for its object the furnishing information and employment to all who need assistance of that character, and they invite correspondence from all portions of the coast in furtherance of its objects; of this let all who are interested take no notice and govern themselves accordingly.
Wheat receipts are quite light and prices have shaded off slightly last week's quotations. Flour is quiet, the trade being almost entirely local, price steady. Barley has been quite active for the week, though at slightly lessened rates. Oats are firm with fair inquiry but light stock; the market is partly supplied from Oregon. Corn is without essential change in price, stock tight but sufficient to meet all present demands. Borkwheat is firm but in limited supply and fair prices are outmanageable. Eye is scarce and firm at rates last quoted. Potatoes are in good demand for both new and old crop and good prices are obtained all round; new are coming in quite freely, taking the place of the old, which are being rapidly worked off. Onions are scarce and high with active demand for all choice lots. Hops are nearly out of market. Receipts of the Spring clip of wool have been unusually large, thus far, and the general quality has been much above the average; there has been much activity to the market since the opening—as to Fall wool, sales are very light, nearly all the stock remaining on hand being of inferior quality and undesirable—consequently when sales are effected only the lowest prices are obtained. Dairy products are in free receipt, fully up to daily requirements, without over stocking the market or reducing prices below fair paying rates.
WHEAT—There is very little doing in the way of export. The principal buyers are millers, who are paying as high as $180 for choice lots—good shipping may be quoted within the range of $170/$175, and ordinary $155/$165 per cental. Sales noted during the week under review aggregate 22,000 sacks, in lots, within the range of our quotations.
RUPTURE,
MARKEN'S TRUSSES AT INDUCED PRIORIES.
NEW METHOD WITH ANOTHER ADVANTAGE.
At this time payment is being taken in the Pacific Coast Bank Canada. In consequence of heavy fluctuations in recent months, it is necessary to continue in connection with all banking and other transactions with an interim bank account. In an interimation, which not only guarantees twelve per cent, per year all stockholders, but provides for their present dividends. The Twelve per cent. Consol were incorporated on the 21st of February for the purpose of transmitting a general business and selling making properties, city real estate and agricultural and other lands. In the States and Territories of the Pacific Count. Determined to do only a slightly limitate business, the Directors rejected the old method in vogue by mining companies generally, and adopted a new one which secures all parties who become shareholders equal advantage in the business transactions? By the provisions of the by-line.
A SIXKING FUND
In so be mind of one-ball the proceeds of the total capital stock, which shall be paid on the joint account of the original co-owners. The stock will be classified as follows: Stinking Fund, mining property, city real estate, and agricultural lands. Before any stock is issued in any class, the property will be appraised by the owners, and the mutual value returned upon the books of the Company. Shares for more than fifty per cent. of the valuation will be issued in any of the classes, and the amount of shares offered for sale in any one class, exclusive of the sales of stock in the Stinking Fund, will not be allowed to exceed $900, if sold at less than the par value of a dollar per share.
GUARANTEES OF SAFETY.
In regard to the Stinking Fund, which will constitute fifty per cent. of the par value of the stock, all money received as the proceeds of sales of stock on account of the fund will be deposited with some solvent banking institution, which pays interest on deposits invested in interest bearing stocks, bonds and other securities, which can be realized on in thirty days, and in no case will it be lawful for the directors or trustees to invest any money of the Stinking Fund in the purchase of stocks, bonds or other securities of any incorporation whatever, which shall have failed to pay interest or dividends for a period of six months preceding any proposed investment pertaining to the Stinking Fund of the company.
PAYMENT OF INTEREST.
The by-laws further make positive provision for the payment of interest monthly on all stock issued in each class at the rate of twelve per cent. per annum, payable on the 5th day of each month. Another important concession is that any shareholder has the option to tender immediately for payment at any price clearly that may be preferred. No assessment will be levied until the total stock of the Stinking Fund shall have been sold and paid out as provided by the by-laws. Indeed, so secure is the plan of the company that in case whole capital stock of the company should be sold immediately and a half on its total capital stock. Perhaps no other company in the world has ever been able to present so brilliant a certainty.

BARLEY.
We note considerable activity to the market—sales for the week, in lots, aggregating 1,000 tons, at prices within the range of our quotations, which are as follows: Coast feed, $1.42%@$1.47%; bright Bay, $1.52%@$1.60%; choice brewing, $1.00%@$1.65%, which latter is about the top of the market.
OATS.
The market demand is fair, but supplies are light, partly from Oregon, which are selling within the range of $2.00%@$2.20 per cental.
KNEY.
Is in good demand; receipts are light. There has been some advance in price, the present range being $1.25%@$1.37% per 100 lb. CORN. Receipts have been moderate, with little more inquiry. Small transactions are reported at an advance, quotable now at $1.50%@$1.54% for prime Yellow. White is very scarce and higher, quotable at $1.60%@$1.62%. BRAN and MIDLINGS. The mill prices have advanced to $2.10 for bran, and $5.00 for middlings. The demand is good.
HAY.
There is a fair supply of both new and old, with an improved demand and a tendency to higher prices. The cargo price on the wharf ranges from $10 to $18.00 ton, according to quality, there being an unusually wide range in prices.
STRAW.
A good article is saleable at 60%@60% per bale.
BEANS.
The demand has fallen off lately—supplies are large and prices weak at the following rates for jobbing parcels: Bayos, $2%@$2.37% per 100 lb. Pink, $1%@$1.19%; Red, $1%@$1.19%; White Pea, $2%@$2.37%; White Butter at $3%@$3.49%. HOPS.
There is no movement to speak of. Stocks are very light, and prices are easing off; $50% may now be quoted as the range.
HONEY.
There is no change to report. Small lots of new strained are received weekly from Los Angeles. Present stocks are much reduced and prices remain steady and firm at 18%@22%; for White Comb; dark do!@15%; Strained remains steady at 6%@10%, according to quality.
POTATOES.
The stock of old is very much reduced, the demand continues good for choice Humtoadt and Tomales, which are quotable at $2.25%@$2.37% per 100 lb. New are coming in freely and are jobbing at $2.50%@$3.00 per cental, according to size.
WOULD.
The receipts of the Spring clip have been unusually large, the total receipts for the past four weeks aggregating 41,000 bales. The market has been quite active since the opening of the season, and remunerative prices have been obtained. Sales for the week under review aggregate 1,500 thousand lbs Spring clip within the range of our quotations, which are as follows: Burry and heavy tree, 15%@16%; good condition shipping grades, 18%@22%; extra choice, 22%@22%. COTTON.
There is out little movement, and prices are merely nominal, say 12%@13%. Stock on hand held for higher figures.
PAYMENT OF INTEREST.
The by-laws further make positive provision for the payment of interest monthly on all stock issued in each class at the rate of twelve per cent, per annum, payable on the 5th day of each month. Another important concession is that any shares derive the option to take stock in payment for interest at par value in any class that may be preferred. No assessment will be levied until the total stock of the Ninking Fund shall have been sold and paid out as provided by the by-laws. Indeed, we secure the plans that in the capital stock of the Ninking Fund invested as provided, the proceeds would be sufficient to pay the interest for eight years and a half on the total capital stock. Perhaps no other company in the world has ever been able to present so brilliant a certainty.
DIVIDENDS.
Stockholders will not only be sure of their twelve per cent, per annum but that their surplus will be paid from the profits and sales of property and only consents that have been issued for property valued and entered on the books of the company. As there can be very little question that the transactions of the company may reach something handsome, the dividend projects should serve as a strong inducement to stock purchasers, for perhaps in no other direction can they be positive of receiving one per cent, a month for money invested, and almost a certain of large yearly addition.
A further provision can be made at any time by the company by setting guide the percentage agreed upon of the sales of the properties of the company. The main object of the directors is to incorporate a rise in earnings from business in mining and property than has hitherto obtained on this coast. They are therefore resolved to touch nothing but bona file investments, and to make it a rule to have nothing to do with speculative values. Every possible care will be taken to protect the treasury holders and the buying rate is set one-way. The company is at 36 Montgomery street. T.Phelps is the President, and W.S. Keymeynola the Secretary.

A MONTH-AGENDA WANTED E
POTATOES.—The stock of old is very much reduced, the demand continues good for choice Humboldt and Tomales, which are quotable at $25@$37% per 100 lbs. New are coming in freely and are jobbing at $25@$30 per cent, according to size.
WOOL.—The receipts of the Spring clip have been unusually large, the total receipts for the past four weeks aggregating 41,000 bales. The market has been quite active since the opening of the season, and remunerative prices have been obtained. Sales for the week under review aggregate 1,500,000 lb Spring clip within the range of our quotations, which are as follows: Burry and heavy tree, 15@18c @B; good conditioned shipping grades, 15@22c extra choice, 22@22c.
LOTION.—There is but little movement, and prices are merely nominal, say 12½% of 15c. Stock on hand held for higher figures.
HIDES.—Prices remain firm at our quotations—all that are offered being taken at those rates—the demand continues fair. The following are cash rates paid by dealers in this city: Dry, usual selections, 18@18c; wet-salted, 5g/¢c.
TALLOW—Stock on hand is still accumulating, and hard to work off, the demand being quite light—prices are merely nominal. Remained, of good quality, commands 6g/¢c, while large quantities of fair grade will bring only 6g/¢c. The present stock accumulations are reported at about 4,000,000 lbs.
SEEDS.—There is an active demand for many varieties, the oil-mill taking all the clean Flax offered at our quotations. We quote: Alfalfa, 15@18c; Canary, scarce, 12@18c; Flax, 3@18c; California Mustard duil; 15@22c.; Timothy, 7c @B.
CATTLE.—Our markets are abundantly supplied with all the varieties of meats of the best quality. The following are the wholesale rates: Beef, 3g/¢c, a carding to quality; Calves plenty at 5@18c; Mutton, 3@4c; pientful; Lambs, 5c; Hogs on foot, 6½%@7c; Hogs dressed, 8½%@9½%; the latter price for choice small ones.
POULTRY.—The market demand is fair, receipts are large, prices moderate. We give the range as follows: Hemis and Roosters, $7.00 @50 doz; Broilers, $4.00 @50 doz; Tweese, $2.00 @325 pair; Ducks, do., $7 @750 doz.; Turkeys, live, 22@24c @B.
DAIRY PRODUCTS.—The supply of Fresh California Roll Batter is about equal to the daily consumption, all the surplus being packed by the dairymen as fast as made—present prices being firm within the range of 21½%c, the latter price being for the production of the best dairies in Marin county. There is some Eastern here, but not offered on the market. New California cheese is coming in freely and stock is accumulating, selling at 16@18c. Fresh California eggs command 26%@27%, the demand being good, but there will probably be a decline in prices on the receipt of Eastern, large quantities of which are reported soon to arrive by rail.
GREEN FRUITS—California Oranges, $35.00 @40 doz; Tahiti Oranges, $30.00; California Lemons, $40 @45 @00; Limes, $15 @00 @20 @00; Sicily Lemon, hx. $15 @00 @17 @00; Cocoa nuts, 100 @110 @00; Bananas, $bh. $2 @50 @35 @00; Pineapples, dx. $6 @00 @80; Apples, com hx. $1 @51 @15 @15; do. choices, $2 @03 @93; Strawberries cheat of choice, $6 @09 @99; Cherry blossoms, $bh. $4 @36e; Gooseberries, $bh. $6 @99.
We take pleasure in calling the attention of our readers to the XXX Horse Medicine manufactured by H. Williams & Co., 8½ Brenham Place, San Francisco.
