An Irish editor congratulates himself that half the lives told about him aren't true. The late Gen. Shirr, V. S. A., was a physical curiosity, in that he never developed any teeth. An instructor asked a French girl why beer in French was feminine. She replied it was probably owing to the fact that the boys liked it so well. Carl Schurz promises to speak in New York on the Louisiana question when he returns from Europe. It is difficult to imagine what the question will be then. Discussions from St. Joseph, Missouri, state that the grasshoppers are utterly destroying the winter wheat crop there, as also in other parts of Missouri and In Kansas. A small boy in New Haven made a sensation for a short time by quietly transferring a card bearing the words "take one," from a lot of handbills in front of a store to a basket of oranges. A New Orleans woman's insanity induces her to shout "Stop thief!" whenever she sees anybody running in the street, and several staid old men, upon starting briskly for a horse car, have been chased and captured in consequence of her outcries. Wm. V. Robinson, of Bridgetment, New Jersey, has a minie-gall in his brain which he received on August 29, 1862. He is rarely troubled with it. The only inconvenience he suffers is a pain and giddiness when he works in the sun. He is a bottler by trade. "I'm a long road home you have," said Father Murphy to Tim, who had been drinking out of a tailor's thimble. "Ah, y尔 riv'rence," replied Tim, "it's not the length of the road that bothers me—it's the width of it, your riv'rence." An English nobleman of high rank has been obliged to sell estates which have been in the family for centuries, in order to clear himself of the difficulties in which his wife had involved him by her passion for gambling. An English nobleman of high rank has been obliged to sell estates which have been in the family for centuries, in order to clear himself of the difficulties in which his wife had involved him by her passion for gambling. The Duchess of Manchester is said to have lost £140,000. Mr. Agustin Daly, the New York theatrical manager, says that in Paris he has seen "colored spectators sitting side by side with duchesses," and he doesn't see why the same thing may not be done here. We would suggest that it would be necessary to first trot out the duchesses.—Rochester Union. An old vag stopped a pedestrian on a Detroit street recently, and asked for two shillings to purchase a dinner. "Can't do it," replied the pedestrian. "Well, one shilling, then?" "No—can't do it." "Well, gimme five cents." "Not a red." "A chew of tobacco." "No, sir." "Well," continued the vag, in despairing tones, "you will at least tell me whether you think we'll have another snowstorm this week." He got the man's opinion. Old Mother Hubbard: A photograph of a group in Connecticut, representing five generations of the Hubbard family, is on exhibition. The group consists of Mrs. Hannah Hubbard, aged 79; her daughter, aged 59; her granddaughter, aged 40; her great-granddaughter, aged 17, and her great-great grand-child, aged 1 year. By direction of the Director of the Mint, the coinage of the new twenty-cent pieces was commenced at the Philadelphia Mint on the 19th inst., and dies for the same piece were sent to Carson City and San Francisco Mints. The twenty-cent coinage at these Mints will be commenced at once. Professor Baird is to have an entire building at the Centennial devoted exclusively to an exhibition of fish and fish culture. He will exhibit upwards of 600 plaster casts of food fishes peculiar to the coast of America. The display will also include models of every description of fishing-smack boats, selnes, nets, and all the paraphermalia used in the catching, caring for and curing of fish. The Call speaks of an artesian well which had been sunk in Germany, three-quarters of a mile in depth, to find salt. More than half a mile of solid salt was discovered. This is the way valuable mines are now explored, only that with the improved diamond drill, fifty or sixty feet can be bored through solid rock each day, bringing up a complete core of the material penetrated. "Five cents fare for that child, madam," said a street-car conductor yesterday, as he opened the door and put his head in. "Very well," she replied, feeling in her pockets; "this is an orphan child, and I'm its guardian. I must have a receipt for all moneys paid out, and as soon as you write one I'll drop a nickel in the box." He shut the door, and leaned over the brake like a man in deep thought. Storey, of the Chicago Times, is in jail at last. That a man should have elandered almost everything and everbody of good and pure repute for years, and at last be sent to jail for what he said about a Chicago grand jury, reminds us forebly of one of those remarkable episodes of which we often read, wherein a man who has gone through a dozen battles unscathed, is at last kicked to death by a mule or killed by a falling tree. Among the papers of a Capuchin monk, who has just died, was found the following will: "I bequeathe, first, to the Abbe Michaud my brevary, because he does not know his own; second, to M. Jules Favre my frock, to hide his shame; third, to M. Gambetta my cord, which will prove useful one day round his neck; fourth, to M. Thiers his own work, that he may read it over again, and fifth, to France my wallet, because she may shortly have occasion for one to collect alms." The Indian Chiefs from the Black Hills Reservation are in Washington City, where they have come to talk about yielding the Black Hills for a consideration in money down or annuities. They have with them their own interpreters, in whom they have faith. Red Cloud said very plainly that they had had so many lies told them by the fellows out at the agency that they could not trust the general interpreters, therefore they had come to Washington to see the Great Father. Spotted Tail spoke in a similar manner. White Snow, for the Cheyenne, said he had come for a similar purpose. HOTELS ANAHEIM HOTEL, Cor. Centre and Lemon Sts. Anaheim, Cal.
