Anaheim Gazette SATURDAY...MAY 15, 1875. TRANSFUSION OF BLOOD. Few men in this country are better known to the general public than is General Frank Blair. A Democrat; when the rebellion commenced, he took the side of the Government, and was made a Major-General. When the war was over he was elected to the United States Senate, but he was not a Republican, and did not agree with many of the measures of the Republican party. He was put on the ticket with Mr. Greeley, for the Vice-Presidency. Defeated for that position, he also lost his health, and has been partially paralyzed for many months, and but little hope remained that he would ever recover his health. But, recently, a Doctor Franklin has decided to try the effects of transfusion of blood. As is well known, this rather new, starling and risky experimental treatment of disease has been tried occasionally, especially by French physicians, and sometimes, if not always, with success and beneficial results to the patient. General Blair had been so long in his reduced condition that the physician, failing in all other remedies to produce hopeful results, determined to try the transfusion of blood. First, two ounces of blood were drawn from the patient. Then a similar amount was taken from the veins of a healthy man, into a vessel, where it was allowed to remain a short time for the purpose of being oxygenized by the atmosphere, but not long enough to commence coagulating. It is then sucked into an exhausted receiver, and, through a tube, injected into the system of the patient through an opening of a vein in his hotel. ANAHEIM HOTEL, Cor. Centre and Lemon Sts. The undersigned, having been duly appointed Manager of the Planters' Hotel, by BENNETT & PAGE, who have purchased from Frank R. Lafaucherie & Co., all their right, title and interest in the house and personal property of the above well-known house, would respectfully solicit the patronage of its former friends and the travelling public. It will be the aim of the present management to make the hotel a Live Success, And by a rigid supervision over every department with the view of adding to the accommodations and comforts of guests, enhance still further the married popularity it has enjoyed in the past. All accounts due, the Planters' Hotel I am payable only to the under-signed said accounts having been assigned over We have read of experiments of this nature, but in all other cases which we have noticed, the blood was taken from one of the lower animals—a sheep in one, if not most cases—and transmitted directly without any exposure to the atmosphere. After a week had passed over, four ounces of blood were injected or transfused in a similar way. The effects are reported to be of a decidedly encouraging character. The injection of the blood is guided and measured under the eye of the physician, by means of a scale of fine lines on the side of the exhausted receiver. It has been believed for a long time that healthy blood, transferred into the system of an exhausted patient, taking the place of the worn out or impoverished blood of the patient, must have a beneficial effect. And, although the amount injected is but a trifle in proportion to the usual amount in the system of a healthy person, yet it may prove the turning point in the case, and like a new and healthy seion engrafted upon an older stem, gives new life and vigor to the whole. Although a few ounces are but a trifle in amount, yet it must be recollected that it possess many times in a day through the system. The effects upon the patient in the case referred to, appears to be very marked. A favorable change was soon noticed: General Blair exhibiting increased consciousness, and his articulation had improved. If this system of recuperating should prove a success generally, would it not be an interesting study to note what effects other than in renewed health, the transfusion of blood would cause? Is there any such differences in the blood of different animals as to work a change in the character of the patient? If so, the physician might recreate the man mentally as well as physically. For instance: Frank Blair has been accredited with a good deal of the leonine character. He has been a man ready to fight upon occasion, if not even to seek the occasion. And yet he would scarcely be called quarrelsome. Now what would be the effect of substituting new blood, the blood of a healthy sheep, for his own? Suppose some mild-mannered, non-combatant Quaker were renewed, rejuvenated, or re-made by the trans-fusion of the blood of a lion or bulldog into his veins, until he was a man in all other respects, but with the blood of a lion or a bull-dog? Would it make any difference, change his disposition, character, or impulses in any respect? Probably not. And yet we say of a child, he is of his father's DIFFERENT WAYS OF PILING WOOD. They tell of some extraordinary Cincinnati wood sawyers. Old Mr. Crabbapple is very much pleased with a gentleman whom he has engaged to saw wood. "When he plies the wood," said old man Crabbapple to his friend, "if one end projects beyond the others he pounds it with the axe." He's a slouch," replied old Stubble; "you should see my wood-sawyer. When he gets the wood all piled he takes off the rough, projecting ends with a claw-hammer saw." "Does he? Well, he couldn't pile wood for me," broke in old Spikenburg; "my sawyer piles the wood carefully; then goes over the ends with a jack plane, sand-papers them down, and puts on a coat of varnish before he thinks for his pay." Then they all went into the Grand Hotel before Syntax could tell how his wood-sawyer silver-plated all the ends of the wood and nailed a handle on the end of every stick to pick it up by.
