WIT AND HUMOR.

"Dons our constant chatter disturb you!" asked one of three talkative ladies, of a sober-looking fellow-passenger in a coach. "Mo, ma'am, I see been married night on to thirty years," was the maid reply.
An excited Waterbury workman caught up a pail of water to extinguish a fire in a factory, the other day, but perceiving that the water was hot he emptied it, filled the pail with cold water and put out the fire.
He was there.—A lady was telling a friend from the country of a very grand party she had given recently. "We had two generals, one judge, a popular author and a play-writer." "Yes," chimed in her wicked son, "and there was a deputy-sheriff, too, who said he wanted to see dad, and they went out before supper and dad hasn't got home yet."
An Arkansas applicant for a school-teacher's position being asked if he favored corporal punishment, replied: "Not much, Mary Ann; but if any one of the chaps saws me, I'll just grub up a young white oak and wallop him, you bet."
A precocious boy in an up-town family was asked which was the greater evil of the two, hurting another's feelings or his finger. He said the former. "Right, my dear child," said the gratified questioner, "and why is it worse to hurt the feelings?" "Because you can't tie a rag around them," explained the dear child.
A gentleman walking behind two school children the other day, heard the boy inquire, "Will you be at the party tonight?" "I shall be there," answered the miss, "but I may as well tell you now that your love is hopeless. Mamma is determined, papa is set, and it isn't right for me to encourage your attention. I can be a sister to you, but nothing more. Therefore, you needn't buy me any more valentines or give me any more gum."
III, Samuel, has you moved yit?" inquired one colored man of another whom he met at market recently. "No, I'se in Ice signals in the North Atlantic.
A very beautiful and very useful system of ice signaling has been recently adopted by one of the Canadian steamship lines which promises to give great safety and security to passengers crossing the Atlantic. The company has issued to all its commanders an ice chart and tallying ice signals by the use of which steamers passing each other can learn when and where dangerous bergs and ice fields have been encountered. The ice chart is divided into degrees of longitude and half degrees of latitude, nearly making squares, each of which has a separate literal designation. This in each section of the chart consists of two letters representing two flags of the commercial code, and when the corresponding flags are hoisted by a passing steamer they indicate to the passing ship the exact position of the ice met. The ensign hoisted above these means berg ice, and the Union Jack field ice likely to imperil navigation. The flags are, of course, only serviceable in the daytime; but at night the ice signals are made by means of Column's Chatham lamps. The whole system is of extreme simplicity, both in the chart and the code; and easily enables the steamer, after passing through the ice track near Newfoundland, to communicate to the steamer approaching it the precise place of peril, and therefore the imminent necessity of extreme caution in nearing that point. The adoption of this or some similar code by all the transatlantic steamship companies cannot be too urgently sought after, and it is a wonder they have not, for their own safety, long since devised one. Great as has been the advances in modern navigation, no navigator has yet found any means of detecting the presence of an iceberg until he has approached far within the circle of great danger. The fact that the floating ices of the Atlantic select a pathway crowned by the world's commerce and upon which their stealthy movements are concealed by fog must always make them the objects of terror to the mariner.—Star in the West.

"Wall, I did make up my mind to, but you see the family next door, and the family on the corner, and de family 'cross the street, have left dere woodpiles out doors, and I doesn't desire to change."
WAS WILLING TO SPARK A PATTERN.—The other day a lady of this city went to pay her respects to one of the latest arrivals on the list of babyhood, when the following colloquy took place between her and a little four-year old sister of the new comer:
"I have come for the baby now," said the lady.
"You can't have it," was the reply.
"But I must. I came over on purpose," urged the visitor.
"We can't spare it all," persisted the child, "but I'll get a piece of paper and you can cut the pattern — N. Y. Mail.
A High Church Episcopal Bishop in England was very much opposed to any one praying without a book. As he was riding out on a certain day, his horse took fright, ran away, broke the sulky and broke the Bishop's leg. The Bishop was in great pain and in fear of dying, and called for some one to pray with him. There was an honest Christian man, one John Rodgers, who lived near, who was sent for, and as he saw the situation of the prelate, he was deeply affected. The burden of his prayer was as follows: "Seeing you have taken the bishop in hand, to humble him, O Lord! make thorough work. If breaking one leg won't answer, O Lord! break'tother one, too."

"In August, 1689, the regiment I belonged to, landed at Gosport, having been brought down from Gravesend in that grand troopship, the Himalaya. I had not been on shore two hours when I was ordered on duty as a field-officer of the day, and the countersign sent me was 'Cream.' A sergeant of Marines was also sent to me, as a guide to the different guards I had to visit. Among the rest was one, to reach which I was obliged to embark in a boat kept for the purpose, and land on a wharf.
Having, however, approached within about thirty yards of the shore, a voice redolent of the "Emerald Isle" saluted me.
"Who goes there?"

Our TELL-TALE LIPS.—I have observed that lips become more or less contracted in the course of years, in proportion as they are accustomed to express good humor and generosity, or peceviness and a contracted mind. Remark the effect which a moment of ill-temper or grudginess has upon the lips, and judge what may be expected for an habitual series of such movements. Remark the reverse and make a similar judgment. The mouth is the frankest part of the face; it can't in the least conceal its sensations. We can neither hide ill-temper with it, nor good; we may affect what we please, but affectation will not help us. In a wrong cause it will only make our observers resent the endeavor to impose on them. The mouth is the seat of one class of emotions, as the eyes are of another; or rather, it expresses the same emotions, but in greater detail, and with a more irrespressible tendency to be in motion. It is the region of smiles and dimples, and of a trembling tenderness; of a sharp sorrow, or a full breathing-joy, of candor, of reserve, of anxious care, or liberal sympathy. The mouth out of its many sensibilities may be fancied throwing up one great expression into the eye—as many lights in a city reflect a broad luster into the heavens.—Leigh Hunt.
A very decent looking respectable man, about thirty-five years of age, who carried on some small business in a neighboring town, a widower, and a Wesleyan, knocked at my door. He was then a perfect stranger. The man-servant opened it. "I want," said the stranger, "to speak with one of Mr.——'s female servants."
"Which?" "Oh, it does not signify which." The announcement was made in the kitchen. "I'm sure I won't go," says one. "Nor I," says another. "Then, I will," said the nurse, and straight she went to the door. "Do you wish to speak with me, sir?" "Yes, I do," said the stranger; "I am a widower, and I hear a very good character of Mr.——'s servants. I want a wife, and you will do very well." "Please to walk in, sir," said the nurse. The man was really in earnest. In due time he married the woman; and I verily believe that neither of them had any reason to repent the choice thus singularly made. She fell into his ways—had a good voice, and joined him in many a hymn—thus manifesting their happiness and their thanks, while he was busy about his work, and she rocked the cradle. I represent them as I saw them; and I doubt not their whole life was comfortable to the scene.
SHE WANTED MORE—A CONJUGAL DISPUTE—There was a door between the two rooms, and as they raised their voices she could not but hear the lady say, "I tell you, my dear, that I must have $8,000 next year. It is absolutely impossible with this $5,000 that you allow me to make any respectable appearance. I cannot do it." She began to speak angrily when her husband remonstrated. Accordingly, the boat rowing slowly, I answered in as good an Irish brogue as I could muster, "Crame."
To my surprise, the centry roared out, "Halt boat! Be J——s, that's not it."
Upon my soul," was my reply, "I've got no other."
Be the powers," was the answer, "ye'll have to get another. But tell me, are you one of the "Country Down."
Faith, I am," replied I.

All's well.
On landing I found a fine young Tipperary man, six feet high, who with a grin said, "Musha, sure, how mighty soon you remember the countersign!"

It is absolutely impossible with this $5,000 that you allow me to make any respectable appearance. I cannot do it." She began to speak angrily when her husband remonstrated. "My dear, I have given you all I can. I have taken all I dare from my business without really crippling it." "I tell you, sir," she said with increased vehemence, "I tell you that I really must have $8,000 for my dress. I cannot dress as others do unless you give me this."—Boston Post.
"PIZENED."—An old fellow prowling through the alley by the Moffat building yesterday came upon a lot of half decayed oranges which had been just thrown out. He was sorting them over when a boy came along, and taking in the situation in an instant he shouted:
"Them's put there to pizen hogs, mister, and if you bite into one of 'em you're a dead man!"
The old fellow moved off, and the boy sat down and stuffed himself until he was orange-colored clear around behind his ears.—Detroit Free Press.
TOUCCHED HIM.—In a street-car yesterday a boy about seven years old made his mother much trouble by climbing on the seat; asking questions and making remarks about passengers. She whispered to him four or five times without any good results, and finally leaned over and said:
"Now, young man, if you don't behave yourself you can't go with me Sunday to see your brother's grave."
That touched him on a tender spot, and he at once subsided.—Detroit Free Press.
AT LAST.—The spelling school furors has been of great help to at least one Detroiter. He has been courting a girl for three years past and hasn't the courage to speak the mind. As they were seated on the sofa the other night she referred to the spelling school excitement and added:
"Matrimony is an awful long word to spell, isn't it?"
He leaned over, grasped her hand, and the next morning he had arrangements made to be married on the Fourth of July.—Detroit Free Press.

SAN FRANCISCO MARKET.
In reviewing the general market for the past week we can find but little to add to our remarks of last home. All that pertains to the failure of crop prospects must be matter of conjecture. Represents from the different situations of the State are conflicting as to salts of damage to growing crops from various causes, and many of them are heights to be exaggerated; as present we see no reason to change the views we have been expressed, viz., that the crops of all descriptions will be fully up to the average of the two pearls seasons in quantity and quality. The file of immigration continue strong from all the Western States, the daily increase in our population being estimated at 400 persons per day, the total net gains for the three months by rail and by sea being over 10,000 person-
Receipts of wheat from the interior are diminishing daily, causing thereby a material advance in the price within the week. The demand both for milling and for export continues good. Tonnage is abundant. First-crain carrying ships can be chartered to Liverpool direct at $25.5k, which is an advance over previous rates. Flour is quite active, the demand being chiefly for export; rates for the firm grades have been advanced, while superfine and country brands continue low as heretofore quoted. Oregon is sending down large quantities by steamer and sail vessels. Barley is unchanged in price, with a fair inquiry. Oats are in large supply. We have large receipts by sea from Oregon which keep prices down to a nominal rate. Corn is in fair demand at our quotations. Buckwheat is firm at the late advance, with light stock in market. Rye is without change with but little inquiry. Potatoes have advanced still further in prices for the old crop, which is concentrated in few hands, and, by reason of reported injury to the new crop by the late cold snap, holders have it all their own way. There is a large margin on onions—inferior are plenty and cheap; choice have appreciated in value and bring a good price—Oregon sending us large quantities by every steamer from the Columbia River. The stock of hops is nearly exhausted, and holders ask high prices. In Fall wool there is no improvement as regards price, the stock being quite large and nearly all of inferior quality. The Spring clip continues to come forward quite freely for the season, and finds a ready market at satisfactory prices, the general quality being superior, fine and long staple, for which there is a good Eastern demand. Dalry products are in free receipt, fully up to daily requirements, without overstocking the market or reducing prices below fair paying rates.
WHEAT. The export demand continues fairly. Holders are firm in their prices, and strong in their confidence of being able to dispose of all their remaining stock at present or improved rates. The range of prices may fairly be given as follows: Choice Milling; $170@180; Ordinary do; $165@170; Choice Shipping qualities; $1@2167%; Inferior; $145@155. Latest Liverpool quotations are: For average per ct, 9s 4d@9s 6d; for Club, 9s 5d@9s 10d. We hear of but few transactions for the week under review.
FLOUR. There is a steady demand for standard extras and superfine for export, with a all been received from the East (where it
