The resolutions of Fairview Grange, in regard to the new Postal Law, are enthusiastically endorsed by the Press throughout the State. Mrs. W. R. Olden was a passenger on the steamer Orizaba for San Francisco. Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Chase were also passengers on the same steamer. The U. S. Coast Survey party, under command of A. W. Chase, have commenced the work of sounding in Newport harbor. Halberstadt & Co. are gradually getting their branch lumber yard at Anaheim into shape, and will soon have building material on hand of every possible variety. It awakens a faint recollection of the home of his youth. The following is a list of shipments from the Anaheim railroad depot during the month of March: 149 sacks beans; 150 sacks barley; 49 pipes wine; 461 sacks rye; 34 sacks wheat; 217 bales hay; 82 bales wool; 25 boxes eggs. At a meeting of the Hotel and Building Association, held on Monday evening, no business was transacted except to adjourn until this evening in order to allow bidders further time to hand in their proposals for furnishing brick. The Clerk was directed to communicate with the Supervisors of San Diego and San Bernardino counties in relation to having a correct survey of the boundary lines between said counties, no such survey ever having been made. L.Seebold, C.E., was authorized to make a county map for the sum of $1,500, said map to contain all roads, road districts, school districts, and all other things to constitute a complete map of reference. The Board adjourned until the first Monday in May. A Narrow Escape.—A terrific combat took place on Monday, between Messrs. W.Carter and Jonathan Watson, and a noted bear, known as "White Face," which has long been the scourge and terror of the Santiago mountains, which resulted in serious though not fatal injuries to Carter, and the death of his bearship. The gentlemen were traveling through the mountains in search of pasture for their flocks, when they suddenly came upon the huge grizzly, which immediately attacked Mr. Carter, knocking him down before he could draw and cock his pistol. The bear made two terrible bites at his breast, tearing his flesh in the most horrible manner, and immediately pursued Mr. Watson, who had retreated in order to procure time to prepare his rifle for action. Mr. Watson fired a ball from his Henry rifle, which lodged behind the fore shoulder of the infuriated brute, but produced no effect except to enrage him still more. Another shot entered his thick hide without avail. At the third trial the rifle missed from its deflector before an election is ordered. That gentleman will remove to his new quarters in Dreyfus' building during the coming week. George B. Davis, of the Alden Fruit Preserving Works, has completed his tour of inspection of our section, and, as we predicted, he is more than pleased with the beauty and fertility of the country. The land about Tustin City particularly captivated him. John P. Zeyn and F. A. Korn have formed a coppartnership under the firm name of F. A. Korn & Co., and will ship wine and brandy to the Eastern States. Casey, formerly of Orange, is their agent, and has met with great success in the various States through which he has traveled. The bark Camden arrived at Anaheim Landing on Wednesday evening with a cargo of lumber consigned to Griffith & Lynch. The Captain of the bark had received instructions from the owners to discharge his cargo at the Landing, but a telegram was received from the consignee ordering him to discharge at San Pedro. THE SPELLING EPIDEMIC.—The spelling epizoot has reached Anaheim. It will be seen by reference to our advertising columns, it is proposed to have a grand orthographical tournament in Enterprise Hall, on the evening of April 21st. It is expected that our lawyers, doctors, preachers, teachers, printers, grangers and others that eventful eve will, like true nights, buckle on their armor and take a tilt at the lingual monstrosities that infest our spelling books. These old-fashioned spelling schools, after having gone into desuetude for a quarter of a century or more, have again come into fashion. During the past winter almost every city, village and hamlet throughout the land has had a spelling contest. These contests have furnished an inexhaustable fund of amusement, and no doubt have greatly profited those taking part in them. As every editor knows, the art of spelling is one of the "Lost Arts." The receipt of a correctly spelled communication for the press is an event that brings joy to the editorial sanction. Such communications are as rare as angels' visits. If the spellingmania lasts long enough to reform a new of the many bad spellers, ambitious to see themselves in print, editors no others will have cause to rejoice. The spelling match of the 21st will give our spelling sharps, if any such there be among us, a chance to display their orthographical acumen. The school children from the Anaheim and neighboring schools will take part in the contest. Music will enliven the occasion and help to soothe the sorrows of the vanquished. Refreshments will be furnished to buoy up the sinking courage of the contestants. The words to be spelled will be selected from Swinton's Word Book, and will be words in common use. Terms of sale: Monthly Installments CHURCH MEETING.—A meeting of the citizens interested in the organization of the Episcopal church was held at Enterprise Hall on Wednesday. Satisfactory reports of the efforts made to obtain funds for the church building were given, and the ladies have taken upon themselves the charge of raising the further amount necessary for the completion of the edifice, which will be commenced at as early a date as possible. Application is to be made to the Bishop to create an Episcopal Mission. The Trustees of the Church property, elected at this meeting, were Messrs. H. Kellogg, W. R. Olden, Oscar George, S. A. Sheffield and Dr. Jas. Ellis. A FINE PARTY.—The Dancing School Exhibition on Saturday evening last was largely attended, and the spectators indulged in many encomiums over the proficiency of the pupils. The Orange folks are endeavoring to induce Mr. Thompson to open a school at that place, and, if a suitable hall can be procured, he will gratify them. The dancing school is now held on Tuesday and Saturday evenings. RUNAWAY.—As Mr. C. R. Short was riding out with some friends on Saturday last, near Orange, an accident happened to their buggy, rendering the horses unmanageable. The carriage was overturned, precipitating the inmates to the ground, injuring several of them, none, however, fatally.
