SATURDAY...APRIL 10, 1875.
The Rome correspondent of the Journal Des Debats writes that the Pope will take up his residence in the United States if it should become impossible for him to remain in Rome. It was with a view to such an emergency that Archbishop McCloskey was made a Cardinal.
About 4 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon, a terrible explosion of Giant Powder took place in San Francisco. The scene of the explosion was in the building on Harrison street, occupied by Mr. Risdon, the contractor for removing Rincon Rock. It is believed that nearly a dozen lives were lost, and the number injured is many more. The loss by fire will exceed half a million.
The latest attempt to change the manner of electing the President, is to abolish the office of President altogether. A member of the Illinois Legislature has introduced a resolution instructing the Senators to urge an amendment to the Constitution of the United States providing that the executive power of the Federal government shall be vested in the Cabinet; which shall be selected by the House of Representatives, and shall resign or call a new election whenever the House passes a resolution of want of confidence. The purpose, as before stated, is to abolish the Presidency, held for a fixed term under popular election, and confer it on a person selected by the lower branch of the National Legislature.
On last Tuesday a municipal election was held in Santa Barbara, the great contest being for the office of Mayor.
STOCK-MEN MOVING.
As soon as the wool can be sheared, the majority of the sheep owners in this part of the county will be moving out in search of pastures for their flocks. Already the wise ones have had their agents exploring the mountain sections in search of grass and water. Many contemplate a permanent change of location, thinking that sheep-raising in Los Angeles county, without the security of land, has become a thing of the past. Not a few flocks will be driven across the desert this summer, bound for the pasture lands of Arizona. Others will secure some mountain ranges until another winter shall give better sustenance for their sheep on the road, and will then wend their way thither. Messrs. Errington & Lynch, successful sheep-raisers in this section, have lately returned from a tour through the southern portion of New Mexico, and being satisfied with the prospect offered for grazing in that locality, are now purchasing a large number of sheep to take there. Many of the occupants of the Stearns' Ranchos will follow in their wake, as the area which can be leased on those ranchos, for pastures, is rapidly decreasing, and the new ditch projects will soon bring large quantities of land, now used for stock, under cultivation. Lower California, too, holds out some inducements for the wool-raisers, but the insecurity of life and property deters many from going in that direction. We have been over some ranges in that section, which would answer admirably for sheep ranges during the summer months, and there are doubtless many places where the stock could be wintered in the valleys. Sheep can be easily kept in portions of San Diego county, during the winter, and driven into the mountains of Lower California during the summer, as there are large ranges there unoccupied. Mr. Tole from Memphis
On last Tuesday a municipal election was held in Santa Barbara, the great contest being for the office of Mayor. It would seem as if a bloody chasm yawned in the midst of the city, as of the candidates for the Mayoralty one represented the "Up Town" interests, and the other the "Down Town." The latter faction gained the day by electing their representative, Jarett T. Richards, a prominent lawyer, and the "Up Towners" are correspondingly "down" in the mouth. This case of Santa Barbara is not an isolated one. We venture to say that if it is ever again necessary to hold a municipal election in Anaheim, the office of Mayor will be contested for by a partisan of "Los Angeles Street" and a representative of the interests of "Centre Street."
The best way to treat a disagreeable subject is to dispose of it in a very few words. The frost on the nights of Monday and Tuesday was the most severe that has ever been felt in this county. Whilst the damage done to the grape crop is considerable, it is much less than the damage done two years ago. The late sown barley suffered considerable, and the rye that was far enough advanced has also succumbed. But as is generally the case, the losses will not nearly approximate the wild estimates made during the bitter disappointment immediately succeeding the visitation of the destroyer. The storm was felt all over the State, and in the upper counties the damage to the crops is much greater than here. As the old saw says, "It's a good thing it is no worse than it is."
The agent of the Anaheim Lighter Company gives notice to-day, that the steamers Orizaba and Mohongo have ceased to call at Anaheim Landing, and requests that shippers, desiring to receive their merchandise through that port, have their packages plainly marked, "via Anaheim Landing." A week ago we indulged in a pean of praise to the Goodall, Nelson & Perkins' Company for their promise to increase the steamship which shall be selected by the House of Representatives, and shall resign or call a new election whenever the House passes a resolution of want of confidence. The purpose, as before stated, is to abolish the Presidency, held for a fixed term under popular election, and confer it on a person selected by the lower branch of the National Legislature.
MEETING OF THE PRESBYTERY.
Eds. GAZETTE.—The Presbytery of Los Angeles met at San Bernardino on Thursday, April 1st, and continued its session until Saturday night. Nearly all the ministerial members were present, but few of the Elders appeared.
Rev. F. L. Nash, of San Diego, preached the opening sermon.
Rev. John Marquis, of Westminster, was chosen Moderator.
Rev. S. B. King, of Westminster, Rev. Mr. Cameron, of San Bernardino, Rev. A. F. White, of Los Angeles, and Rev. J. M. Allis, of Anaheim, having lately come to this part of the State, were received as members of this Presbytery.
Rev. John Marquis was appointed Presbyterian Church at the Indiana Colony, near Los Angeles, was reported as organized, with 22 members.
Reports from churches showed a commendable growth, and a bright outlook. Many of our churches need church edifices.
The new church at Santa Barbara will soon be completed. The dedication of the church and the installation of the pastor elect—Rev. E. Grahame—will occur in May or June. An arrangement will be made, it is hoped, with Rev. Dr. McLaren, of Detroit, Michigan, to supply Wilmington and vicinity temporarily. Dr. McLaren is one of the first ministers of Michigan, and is spending a short season in Santa Barbara.
The Presbytery voted "no" on the overture sent down from General Assembly upon the question of term or life service of the Eldership. This vote was a tie, which, by standing rules, means a negative.
Dr. A. F. White, of Los Angeles, was elected Commissioner to General Assembly, which meets in Cleveland, Ohio, in May. Judge Thompson, of the same city, was chosen Lay Delegate.
A sermon was preached Friday night by Dr. Phelps, of Santa Barbara.
On Saturday evening a popular meeting was held at which short speeches were made by different ones.
THE agent of the Anaheim Lighter Company gives notice to-day, that the steamers Orizaba and Mohongo have ceased to call at Anaheim Landing, and requests that shippers, desiring to receive their merchandise through that port, have their packages plainly marked, "via Anaheim Landing." A week ago we indulged in a pean of praise to the Goodall, Nelson & Perkins' Company for their promise to increase the steamship service on the Southern route, but this withdrawal of two steamers has led us to a change of heart. Neither the agent of the Lighter Company, nor any of the Trustees, can assign any reason for the change, nor are they aware whether the deprivation will be only temporary. We hope that the courteous agent, Mr. McLellan, will inform us why his Company seeks to emirrass our shippers by curtailing the transportation facilities, which at best have never been adequate.
GOVERNOR PACHECO, says the Sacramento Record, has received the following letter from Miles Brothers, manufacturers of brushes in Brooklyn, New York: Some time since we saw in the papers that your State was overrun with squirrels. Now these little animals enter largely into the manufacture of brushes. The hair on their tails is the so-called camel's hair. The skins are imported from Germany and Russia by the hundred thousand. The price several years ago was $10 per thousand, but it has advanced until they are now worth $20 to $40 per thousand, and it is still advancing. We do not believe they are bothered much with squirrels in the old country and California need not be if it was suggested that the State offer so much a head (or tail) for them; or perhaps the farmers or their boys would take hold and kill them off. A market can be found for all that are killed. Should you think well of this you might have it published in some of the papers. No doubt many ways could be found for bringing the skins to market if this was generally known.

A correspondent of the Express says: Unable at the time when questioned to answer the enquiry, "How many inches English and American measure are equal to the Spanish vara of California?" I take this method of informing those who are interested in the question, that the Spanish vara of California is equal to thirty-three and three hundred and seventy-one thousand and seven hundred and twelve millionths of an inch, or expressed in numerals, is 33.371712 inches.
Mr. Toler is now in Los Angeles from Memphis. Our readers will remember that Gen. Forrest was announced as having made up his mind to come and settle in Los Angeles with a large colony. Mr. Toler is one of the party. He says that Gen. Forrest will not be on here until about May. He says, further, that he is now employed affecting arrangements by which immigrants can be brought on here from Memphis and Atlanta, and if he succeeds in inducing the railway authorities to accept reasonable terms he will be on here within the present year at the head of at least one thousand people. This is agreeable intelligence; and we shall gladly welcome this formidable accession to our population.—Express.
