Anaheim Gazette SATURDAY...JANUARY 2, 1875. Removal of Burs, etc., from Wool by Chemical Agents. The so-called method of cleansing wool, either raw or manufactured, from foreign vegetable matter, such as burls, straw, etc., is founded upon the well known fact that strong acids, especially sulphuric, when diluted and aided by heat, destroy vegetable matter much more readily than they do wool. This importance of the process is indicated in a measure by the numerous patents which have followed its introduction. The wool is first placed in a bath of sulphuric acid of three to four degrees Baume, removed from it to a centrifugal apparatus, and finally placed for a suitable length of time in a chamber heated to 212 degrees, where the vegetable matter is carbonized, while the wool remains uninjured. The adhering acid is removed by thorough washing. Careful investigations have been made by Duelaux, Lechartier and Ravlin, as to the conditions most favorable to the operation, and least liable to injure the wool. It was found that treatment of the wool with certain salts as chlorides, sulphates, etc., before the operation, with a view to protect it from the action of sulphuric acid, is not only worthless, but may even be injurious in some cases in the subsequent operation of dying. Among the large number of chemical agents patented for the destruction of the vegetable matter, sulphuric acid alone was found to answer in practice. Experiments made by allowing certain portions of wool simply to drain after the steeping in the acid, wringing out other portions, and treating others in the centrifugal machine before placing them in the heated chamber for carbonizing the vegetable matter showed that the employment of the centrifugal machine is necessary, not only for the most perfect preservation of the wool, but also for the best results in the subsequent operations of dyeing. A study of the relations existing between the degree of concentration of the acid, the temperature of the carbonizing chamber, and the time of exposure in the latter, with different kinds of cloth, indicated that within proper limits no difference whatever HOTELS PLANTERS' HOTEL, Cor. A SLIGHT MISTAKE.—Lord Macaulay, when a young and unknown man, was visiting Rome, and one night he went to see the Coliseum by moonlight. When alone under the dark arches, where it is as black as night, all of a sudden a man in a large cloak brushed past him rather rudely, as Macaulay thought, and passed on into the darkness. Macaulay's first impulse was to clap his hand into his watch-pocket; and sure enough he found that his watch was not there. He looked after the man, who he doubted not had stolen his watch as he brushed past him, and, peering into the darkness, could just distinguish the outline of a figure moving away. Macaulay rushed after him, overtook him, and, seizing him by the collar, demanded his watch. Macaulay could speak very little Italian, and understood none when spoken, so he was obliged to limit his attack on the thief to a violent shaking of him by the collar, and an angry repetition of the demand, "Orologio! Orologio!" (Watch! Watch!). The man thus attacked poured forth a torrent of rapidly-spoken words, of which Macaulay understood not one syllable. But he again administered a severe shaking to his captive, stamping his foot angrily on the ground, and again vociferating, "Orologio! Orologio!" Whereupon the detected thief drew forth the watch and handed it to his captor. Macaulay, satisfied with his prowess in having thus recaptured his property, and not caring for the trouble of pursuing the matter any further, turned on his heel ANAHEIM HOTEL.
