Southern Californian SATURDAY...OCTOBER 17, 1874 Kleinigkeiten. Mr. Otto Des Granges has twenty tons of baled barley hay for sale. Ten acres of land at Orange changed hands this week at $100 per acre. Rev. Mr. Loop will hold divine services at Enterprise Hall to-morrow at 11 o'clock A.M. The new firm of J. W. Clark & Co. propose to sell their goods at extremely small profits, and in order to do this successfully have discarded the credit system. Trains on the Southern Pacific are now running through to Bakersfield, and in consequence the down mail commenced on Thursday to arrive three-quarters of an hour earlier. A petition was forwarded to the Board of Supervisors early in the week asking action by them regarding the Anaheim Landing road. We suppose from no notice having been taken of it, that it must have arrived after the Board closed its session. See to-day's advertisement of a ruffle, to take place on Nov. 6th and 7th, at the Hote's. The prizes are on exhibition at the Anaheima Drug Store. Among them we notice especially the three oil paintings, which, though small, are perfect gems of art. We learn from the Ventura Signal that Rev. W. A. Knighten has assumed charge of the Methodist Church at San Buenaventura, to which he was appointed by the late Methodist Conference, and that he preached therein his first sermon on Sunday last. A desire to increase the circulation of the CALIFORNIAN led us this week through the whole of Orange, Santa Ana, and Tustin City and through a small part of Skowhegan. Result—Twenty-five new subscribers and the discovery of a new town. J. M. Gaillard, until recently in the employ of P. Davis & Bro., has rented the store on Los Angeles Street, formerly occupied by Heimann & George, and in a few days will open therein a general merchandise establishment. THE MARSTON CONCERTS. — Miss Fannie Marston, assisted by Messrs. Morse and Havell, will give a musical entertainment to-night at Enterprise Hall. The programme will consist of twelve selections of popular music, among which we notice the favorite ballads of "The Last Rose of Summer" and "Annie Laurie." The entertainment will be repeated on Sunday evening, but with an entire change of programme and embracing choice selections of sacred music, appropriate to the day. Miss Marston, although a young aspirant before the footlights, has already reached great eminence in her profession, and her performance during a recent tour through the Northern portion of the State has been invariably noticed in terms of glowing encomium. From the enthusiasm occasionally manifest in these notices, we are led to suspect that the eye, as well as the ear, of some bachelor Bohemian has been captivated by the fair songstress, and that the charm of a Siren's voice has acquired enhanced power from the omnipotent spell of Beauty. Be that as it may however, the lady possesses musical abilities of the highest order, and we bespeak in her behalf such an audience as will afford to the giver the same pleasure which lies in her power to bestow. [Since the above was in type we have been informed by the agent of the troupe that, if desired, a dance will follow the opening exercises of Saturday's entertainment.] AN INCONVENIENCE.—Our neighbors of Orange are much inconvenienced on account of an absence of mail communication with the outside world. They have a postmaster, qualified and willing to distribute the mails, when they arrive; but as Uncle Sam has forgotten to connect their post-office with any point on an existing postal route, the mails never come. For a short while the citizens of the village employed a carrier, to bring the Orange mail from Santa Ana, but it was found that this did not work well, and besides the tax was too heavy, borne as it was by only a few individuals. We would call the attention of the distributing office at Los Angeles to this inconvenience, and request a representation of the matter to the proper authorities. SANTA ANA ITEMS.—From our correspondent at Santa Ana we learn A desire to increase the circulation of the California led us this week through the whole of Orange, Santa Ana, and Tustin City and through a small part of Skowhegan. The following deeds were filed in the office of the County Recorder during the past week: W. C. Pendleton to S. C. Baker—20 acres at Orange; $600....W. C. Pendleton to E. R. Nicole—21 8-10 acres in Santa Ana rancho; $500....V. Elsible to Susanana Aticarn—1-3 of lot 27; block 33. Eternity street, Los Angeles; $100. The grading party at work on the railroad section between this place and Los Nietos are now encamped near Mr. Field's residence, and have completed their work to within two miles of the depot grounds. The track-layers have completed the section between Los Nietos and the San Gabriel river, and construction trains are now running to that point. The Schooner Lucy Ann, Capt. Hilgins, arrived at Anaheim Landing October 6th, from Umpqua with 150,000 feet of lumber for Halberstadt & Co. The schooner Golden Gate arrived on Wednesday from Santa Cruz with 140,000 feet of lumber, consigned to the same firm. The Golden Gate will be loaded back with 3,000 sacks of grain for San Francisco. Mendelson, of the Merchant Tailoring Emporium, was anxious to close out his business, and go at something else. But the people of Anaheim know when they have a good tailor and orders came upon him so thick and fast that he was compelled perforce to order a new stock of goods. These goods are now arriving and consist of every description of Fall and Winter stuff. Letters addressed to the following persons, were remaining in Anaheim postoffice, October 16th, 1874: Henry Bruce 2, Rita Barruel, C. Burry, Miss E. Clark, Miss Annie Collins, Jas. F. Dalton, N. D. Deyo 3, Jas H. Ellison, 2 J. E. Guthrie, A. Kohler, Mrs. A. Lotspict, J. A. Martin 2, L. Rostack. A letter addressed to J. B. Holaway, Gallatin, is detained for want of proper postage. Rev. J. M. Allis, who arrived by the last trip of the steamship Senator and who will conduct divine services at the Presbyterian church to-morrow, has been until recently in charge of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Lansing. His wife's failing health caused him to resign his pastorate at that place, and he comes to this const in search of a favorable location for his invalid partner. He will remain in Anaheim for a month, holding services on each Sabbath of that time with a view to a permanent occupation of the pulpit of the Presbyterian church, should such SANTA ANA ITEMS.-From our correspondent at Santa Ana we learn that: The friends of Mr. and Mrs. Hewitt gave them an agreeable surprise on Monday evening last. The occasion was the tenth anniversary of their marriage and much tinware was forthcoming in consequence thereof. After a tempting and cosy little supper all retired, feeling well satisfied with the evening's entertainment...A slight shower of rain visited us on Wednesday of last week.* Though unexpected, it did but little damage...A good share of the farmers in the vicinity are engaged in husking and preparing corn for the market...Mr. and Mrs. J. Hickey had the misfortune to lose their eldest child on last Saturday. LET OUT.-Owing to an unusual pressure upon our advertising columns, we have been compelled to omit two columns of advertisements already in type, and which will appear next week. Engene Meyer & Co., of the "City of Paris" store have secured one column in which to set forth the attractions with which their place of business abounds. A CARD. EL SOUTHERN CALIFORNIAN: — I have understood that certain parties, working in the interests of Newport Harbor, have been busily engaged trying to get up freight for schooners, which are expected to arrive in that "Harbor," with lumber, and in order to induce shippers to patronize said schooners, have represented that the steamers were charging $3 per ton freight on grain, and the Lighter Company $1.50, making $4.50 from Anaheim landing to San Francisco, which is an error of 50 cents per ton on steamer charges, and I think Mr. Me——is perfectly cognisant of the fact. The Lighter Co.'s charges $1.50 per ton on grain and the Steamers charge $2.50, making $4.09 lighterage and steamer freight. Those who doubt this statement will please call and see. JAMES D. OTT, Agt. Anaheim Landling. Coming to Anaheim. Montgomery Queen's Great Menagerie and Greens. From what we learn from our San Francisco exchanges, this is an institution worthy the attention and patronage of our people. Heads of families should take their children to see the members of the Creator. The manager is very large, comprising some fourteen dams of wild rays animals, including the largest elephant you brought to the Pacific Coast. Prominent in this great collection is a lioness and four wilde bears born at Placerville. Oct 21: an African liona very rare animal, the largest of Rev. J. M. Allis, who arrived by the last trip of the steamship Senator and who will conduct divine services at the Presbyterian church to-norrow, has been until recently in charge of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Lansing. His wife's failing health caused him to resign his pastorate at that place, and he comes to this coast in search of a favorable location for his invalid partner. He will remain in Anaheim for a month, holding services on each Sabbath of that time with a view to a permanent occupation of the pulpit of the Presbyterian church, should such relationship promise mutual benefit to pastor and people. All of the Sears', that were not already here, arrived from Texas yesterday. As the steamer stage, loaded with two or three generations of the family—there were about forty of them—drove into town, old lady Sears, the mother, grandma and great-grandma of the flock; caught sight of those whom she believed to be hundreds of miles away. We commenced with the intention to describe the meeting, but we give it up. The old lady evidently had the same feeling as the man who ate seventeen and one-half apple dumplings. It was too much sweetness at once. The Board of Supervisors held an adjourned meeting on Wednesday, at which the consideration of road matters generally and bridges especially was the order of business. It was determined to defer a decision in these matters until Oct. 28, when it will be decided regarding the reconstruction of the bridge over the New San Gabriel river, and also whether it will be advisable to construct the three bridges, required to make the Anaheim and Wilmington road passable during the ensuing six months. The Directors of the Bolsa Chica Wharf Company have received an official letter from Messrs. Northam and Robinson of the Los Angeles Land Company, enclosing a deed to the Wharf company for eight acres of land in La Bolsa Chica rancho, and pledging their company to subscribe for three hundred shares of stock, when that amount alone remains unsubscribed. As there are already 520 shares subscribed, negotiations are now in progress with these gentlemen, representing to them the importance of an early completion of the work, and asking for an unconditional subscription. Montgomery Queen's Great Menagerie and Circus. From what we learn from our San Francisco exchanges this is an institution worthy the attention and patronage of our people. Heads of families should take their children to see the wonders of the Creator. The menagerie is very large, comprising some fourteen dens of wild and rare animals, including the largest elephant yet brought to the Pacific Coast. Prominent in this great collection is a lioness and four whips born at Plaserville, Oct 24; an African lion, a very rare animal, the largest of the antelope species; an African zebra, the only thoroughbred one in the United States; an African black mongoose and two lions. Royal Bengal tiger, hunting kopari, white deer, capybara, or water hog cougar, hyena, kangaroo and a large collection of other animals and rare birds. The equestrian troupe is also one of the largest and finest, comprising artists of rare ability. Miss Molle Brown, a Miss of some fourteen years of age, executes the most daring and difficult feats, including a somersault, being the only female in America that does it. Leopard and Garaldine, the excelsior gymnasts; Mr Romo Sebastian, some result and bareback rider; Charles and Carrie Austin, lighting Zavave drillists; Signor Ferrucite, the man serpent; Mile Jeanatt Ellsler, tight rope artist; Mt Austin and Billy Burke, comical; together with a large number of other great at sea are included in this monster show. Two performances will be given each day so as to give ladies and children an opportunity to see its exhibition during the day and avoid the crowd at night. Those coming from the country can also take advantage of the afternoon performance, so that they can return home by daylight. The same performance will be given in the afternoon as at night. Remember that this exhibition is the same as exhibited at San Francisco a short time since. See pictorial posters and programmes for further particulars. To come off November 31, 1874. Until recently it was thought that the settlement was confined to the cities and towns but reliable accounts show that the rural districts are as much in earnest on the subject as the cities. Indeed the fact is not surprising when it is known that this is positively the last chance which can be given and at this Concert $250,000 in cash will be distributed to the ticket-holders in such prices or gifts as $250,000, $100,000, $50,000, $25,000, $20,000.
