Ohio and Indiana spoke on Tuesday the sentiment of their citizens regarding the policy, pursued by the Administration towards the Southern States, and by their Democratic majorities, given in two great strongholds of the Republican party, have most forebly expressed their condemnation of the conduct of a Government, which has constantly given its power and influence to the systematic oppression of a conquered people.
Brooks, of Arkansas, who wanted to be Governor of that State and attempted to enforce his wish et armorated before the Southern Republican Convention at Chatanooga, Tenn., on last Wednesday. Whilst uttering a bitter denunciation of the White League, he declared reconstruction a perfect success, and said he preferred a government of thieves to one of murderers. Brooks has evidently not allowed personal preferences to direct his judgment, as his comparison is doubtless made between the existing government under Baxter and the one which he failed to carry through.
Whilst the President and suite are "doing" the Western states, Secretary Robeson employs a few of his leisure hours in "stumping" it in New Jersey. He addressed a large audience at Patterson last week and in the course of his speech asserted that "neither the Administration nor its Chief would ever be found outside the Republican party, nor acting contrary to the established traditions of the country." After the speech Mr. Robeson explained the latter clause as referring to the third term. But suppose the Devil, in the gulse of the Republican party, should take its chief up on to a high mountain?

The State Grange lately assembled at Sacramento, held its business session with closed doors and its proceedings will only be made known through the legitimate channel of communication. We gather however from the opening address of Worthy Master J. M. Hamilton, published in the Sacramento Record, that the Order in California is in a thriving and healthy condition. At the last annual meeting of the State Grange the number of Granges was 101 with a membership of 3,168. Since that time 127 new Granges have been organized, making a present total of 231, and the membership has been increased to 18,500, equal to an increase of nearly five hundred per cent. In the course of a single year.
Affairs of State are getting to be considerably mixed in our neighboring territory of Utah. The United States Grand Jury at Salt Lake appears to have been fully alive to the imperative necessity of taking decided action towards removing that political and moral excersecence, which has for so many years defied the National authorities, going even so far as to indict one of their own number for perjury and inescible cohabitation and committing him to jail in default of bail; whilst on the other hand the Order of Enoch has been newly re-invested with the management of territorial affairs and Mormonism expresses its renewed determination to allow no interference with its peculiar institution.
The Viennese must possess rather a strong admiration for the great American people. The commissioners to the World's Exposition, supposed from their position to be representative men, first aroused this feeling by the exhibition of certain traits of character, based upon money-getting at any sacrifice, either of principle or pride. And now comes our accredited embassador to the Court of Austria, John Jay, who refuses to pay his house rent, and wrapping himself in the American Flag, claims exemption from the jurisdiction of the Courts. If "Slim Jim," or some other sporting notoriety could be induced to accept the secretary-ship in the Legation until its chief became proficient in the science of the "little joker," we doubt not that the Austrian cup would fill to overflowing.

Dr. McKaig, beloved pastor of a Chicago church, has been sorcely oppressed with doubt regarding the reliability of certain portions of the Old Testament, and the first stumbling block, which crossed his path, was the Biblical account of Man's First Transgression. His heterosoxy has been the occasion of much prayer and much disquietude in the presbyteries of his church; but as the reverend Doctor is outside of his doubts, a good and pious man, and withal of some considerable reputation as a man of mark, and as his congregation positively refuse to sit under another ministration, the probabilities are great that the church militant, of which he is the spiritual director, will become temporarily a church triumphant. All of which goes to prove that, despite his constant progress in every department of secular knowledge, as regards a higher power and a future state man, in the language of Goethe's scottling flend,
"1st so wunderlich als wie am ersten Tag."
It appears to be the general complaint along the whole of the Southern coast that the carrying capacity of the two lines of steamers, now plying between San Diego and San Francisco, is inadequate to meet the demands, which are constantly made upon them. Upon inquiry we find that the crowded condition of the warehouses at Anaheim Landing is attributable to this cause, and not, as has been heretofore supposed, to the cramped condition of the Anaheim Lighter Company. On its last trip the steamer Constantine was offered three lighter-loads of up freight, but refused to take more than one. And it appears that this is not the only time such a thing has happened, nor is the Goodall, Nelson & Perkins' line the only one in fault. The carrying capacity of the Pacific Mail is equally as inadequate, and necessitates the same course upon its part. We do not refer to this matter however to find fault, but in order that the blame for the slow removal of our exports may not fall upon innocent shoulders. As the case now stands the Anaheim Lighter Company is fully capable of handling with ease all the freight, which the present steamers will receive, and what we most need is at least three or four additional freight vessels.

A nearly one-half of the stock of the Society remains unsold; as it is the desire of the Directors to make the Society a favorite one with the people of the entire District; as the title to the grounds is perfect, and as the land which each share carries is of itself worth to each shareholder almost the par value of ashare, and as it is the intention of the Society to divide up the unsold stock on the 7th day of November next, notice is given to all residents of the District that they may purchase stock, as long as it lasts; at $70 per share, (the amount now paid by 14 assessments) and liable to $30 more assessments in the course of two or three years, or $100 per share, which fully pays up. And also many thousands acres of natural evergreen pastures suitable for Dairying. Good water is abundant at an average depth of six feet from the surface.
On almost every acre of this land flowing arganian walks can be obtained; and the more elevated portions can be irrigated by the water of the Santa Ana river. Most of these lands are naturally moist, requiring only good cultivation to produce crops.

I will take pleasure in showing these lands to parties seeking land, who are invited to come and see this extensive tract before purchasing elsewhere. WM. R. OLDEN. Agent.
