Southern Californian EDITOR. SATURDAY...OCTOBER 10, 1874 In the ranks of the Adventists there has occurred a schism during the past year. The seceders from the original sect, call themselves "Timista," and have fixed May 1st, 1874, for the date, at which Gabriel will blow his horn. Should their assertion have any foundation, worthy of credence, the public mind may rest at ease. The President will not offer himself for a third term. The San Francisco Real Estate Circular, advises the purchase by the State of the Island of Catalina, which will be sold shortly by the Trustees of the Lick Estate, for the purpose of erecting thereon a State Prison. The island contains nearly 40,000 acres, is well wooded and watered, and contains valuable mines and quarries, which the prisoners might be employed in developing, and which, judging from the result of an inspection by certain European engineers, will remain undeveloped unless by some such means. There is some prospect that the Alaskan purchase may yet be made profitable. A committee of three persons, chosen by the people of Iceland, is now in the United States for the purpose of spying out the land, and to make arrangements for the emigration on mass of their people. They desire a home, that is sufficiently cool, and imagine from all accounts that Alaska will prove just the thing. They propose to work the fisheries, engage in the lumber business and furnish sailors for the Pacific Coast trade. We are glad to note an intimation in our valuable contemporary, the Southern California of Anaheim, that it intends to change its name, on THE REASON WHY. As will be seen by reference to the proceedings of the Board of Supervisors, published in our local columns, the rate of taxation for the current fiscal year has been fixed at $2 16 on each one hundred dollars worth of taxable property. This is an increase over the last year's rate of six cents on each one hundred dollars. In order to prevent, however, any erroneous impressions, regarding the administration of our county affairs, we give at length the rate of apportionment made for the several funds: State: $64 - $10 School: 20 Current Expenses: 20 Hospital: 10 Road: 15 - 1-10 Jail: 1 Salary: 30 Interest on Sinking Fund of 1861: 16 Interest on Sinking Fund of 1869: 12 Interest on Sinking Fund of 1873: 4 Interest on Sinking Fund of 1874: 20 Gopher and Squirrel Fund: 5 Court House Fund: 4 Total: $2 16 Deducting from this amount the State tax of 64 9-10 cents it will leave for the rate of taxation for County purposes $1 51 1-19 on each one hundred dollars. This is actually a decrease from the rate, fixed for last year, of nearly nine cents. The State tax has been raised by the State Board of Equalization from fifty cents to the amount given above, and the probable reasons therefor are given by the Comptroller of State in a letter addressed to the Auditor of Los Angeles County, and in which he is notified that 22 3-10 cents of the State tax has been apportioned to the State School fund. This apportionment was made under the provisions of a law, recently enacted, which had for its object to make all property in the State to contribute its share to the support and building up of a more thorough system of education. No blame can be attached to the Board of Supervisors for the rate of taxation as... pose of spying out the land, and to make arrangements for the emigration on masse of their people. They desire a home, that is sufficiently cool, and imagine from all accounts that Alaska will prove just the thing. They propose to work the fisheries, engage in the lumber business and furnish sailors for the Pacific Coast trade. We are glad to note an intimation in our valuable contemporary, the SOUTHERN CALIFORNIAN of Anaheim, that it intends to change its name, on account of the confusion arising from another paper with the same title being published in Bakersfield. A journal so distinctively excellent as our Anaheim contemporary should have a distinctive cognomen.—L. A. Express. The issue of the 17th inst., will complete our fourth volume, and we commence the fifth under the name of "Anaheim Gazette;" the name under which the paper was originally published, and one which is less unwieldy and more appropriate than the present title. TIBURCIO VASQUEZ has again appealed to the public for funds wherewith to assist him in his forthcoming trial. A Spanish newspaper, published in San Francisco contains, the following caption from the cheeky robber: "It not being possible for me in my present condition to obtain money necessary to pay my lawyers for my defence and for the costs indispensable in the trial of my case, I entreat exceedingly the friends of humanity, principally my countrymen, to help me in making up the fund necessary for my defense. I appeal to all persons of philanthropic dispositions. They will eternally oblige me and will receive the heartfelt gratitude of one in disgrace. TIBURCIO VASQUEZ." THE New York Mail explains the indifference of the people about the "Third Term Question" in this way: First.—There is no hurry about settling this matter. When it becomes evident the people want General Grant for another term, and that he will accept, the question becomes a living one. Second.—The people are not afraid that they will wake up some fine morning, and find themselves obliged to vote for Grant for a third term. They feel a serene confidence in their ability to regulate their own conduct, when the time for nomination arrives. Third.—The people are not afraid of being led captive by the office holders who have only influence in proportion to their ability, character and accordance with the popular sentiments. The absolute and ridiculous failure of the late Andrew Johnson to control voters through his office-holders is not forgotten. A WET YEAR. Those old residents, who have given any attention to weather signs, have in all probability noticed that in this section there annually occurs a Southern gale of wind sometime in the month of October, but generally between the first and twentieth days of that month. It is also a noticeable fact that when this wind has been unaccompanied by rain, or when it has been followed with a slight shower, the winter following has been always characterized by a serious absence of rain; on the other hand when there comes flyst a shower, followed by wind, the ensuing seasons have always been of the most favorable nature. Remembering the old rhyme, which governed "ye ancient mariner" of the Nantucket fisheries, and which taught him that "When the wind 's before the rain, You can set your sail again; But when the rain 's before the wind, 'Tis time to take your topsails in." It would seem that this latter peculiarity is not characteristic alone of this coast. The scientist could no doubt explain the reasons therefor by reference to some fixed natural law, but we imagine that the popular mind inclines more readily to yield credence to those unreasoning assertions, which are based solely upon experience and observation. Predicating our prediction therefore upon the old New England rhyme, and upon the ipse dirit of our old residenters we look upon the shower of Thursday morning as a happy augury and prophesy for our farmer friends a most prosperous sea- Second—The people are not afraid that they will wake up some fine morning, and find themselves obliged to vote for Grant for a third term. They feel a serene confidence in their ability to regulate their own conduct, when the time for nomination arrives. Third—The people are not afraid of being led captive by the office holders who have only influence in proportion to their ability, character and accordance with the popular sentiments. The absolute and ridiculous failure of the late Andrew Johnson to control voters through his office-holders is not forgotten. We have learned from private sources that no attempt will be made by the managers of the Texas & Pacific railway to obtain aid from Congress until in March, after the newly elected members will have taken their seats, and only then after a strict count of noses. The present unsoundness of railway investments, caused by the growing disposition on the part of the States to hamper their operations with restricting enactments, has created among Congressmen a feeling unfavorable to an endorsement of the interest coupons of railway bonds. As a defeat in Congress would prove far more disastrous to the interests of the Company than its present state of inaction, and as the feeling, mentioned above, is likely to become even more general than at the present time, it is highly probable that active work will be indefinitely deferred upon the Southern Transcontinental road. In the meantime we hear rumors to the effect that the Southern Pacific Company is endeavoring to obtain a portion of the water front at San Diego, and that if successful their road will be extended from Anaheim Southward to San Diego at an early date. This will effectually cut off the Texas Pacific from the Southern Coast counties, and will force them in the future either to adopt a direct line to San Diego, or to connect with the Southern Pacific in the vicinity of Anaheim, the nearest point on the latter road from San Gorgonio Pass. AN INDICATION OF GROWTH. To the returning absentee the large addition to the growth of the Santa Ana valley, which has been made within the last eighteen or twenty months, would be apparent at a glance, but to the constant resident, who has witnessed one by one the arrival of the new-comers, the increase is not so readily noticeable. The Great Register of the County, the different schools, and other similar sources of information are at the command of those statistically inclined, but to the general observer there is no such certain means of acquiring a correct idea of this magical increase as can be obtained by a visit to the lumber yards, which are now supplying the country demand. Dealers inform us that it is almost impossible to form any calculation regarding the demand even of the immediate future, and that though constantly in receipt of cargo upon cargo, shipped in as rapid succession as the capacity of the saw-mills will admit, they find great difficulty in keeping a well-assorted stock upon hand. These facts, when considered with the present high prices of lumber and the knowledge that each buyer contracts his purchases to the least possible amount, afford most convincing proof that the thorough settlement of the whole of the Southern portion of the county is not a speculative contingency, but that it is solely a question of a few more years. AROUND THE COUNTY. The Irish Literary Club of Los Angeles will give a ball on the 26th last. Marshall's Japanese Troops are performing in Los Angeles.
