IABYSSINIAN SLAVES.
The Abyssinian girls are remarkably pretty, with large eyes and delicately-shaped features. These girls are brought down from the Galla country by the slave dealers from Abyssinia. That beautiful country, which had we not wantonly deserted it, might have become of great importance, is now a prey to anarchy. The opposing tribes are only too happy to sell their female prisoners to the Arab slave-traders. These people bring down the young girls in gangs by various routes, but the principal outlet is the Red Sea, about Massowa. A great market is at Gallabat, the frontier town of Abyssinia. There I have seen them crowded together in mat tents, waiting for purchasers from those commissioned to procure slaves by the wealthy Arabs and Turkish officials. At Gallabat a handsome young girl of sixteen is worth about £15, but the same girl at Cairo would fetch £40 or £50. The Abyssinians are a much advanced race compared with the negroes of Central Africa. The women are very affectionate and devoted to those who show them kindness. Thus, as they combine beauty with devotion, they are much sought for, and command a high price in the market. They are seldom purchased by common people, as their price is too high, and they can not earn money by bodily labor like negresses, being too delicate and unable to sustain fatigue. Although they are generally termed Abyssinians (Habesheeo), I have never met with a true high-caste Abyssinian girl—these would be Christians; whereas all I seen have been Gallas—a Mohammedan race. Many of these poor girls die from fatigue on the desert journey from Gallabat to the sea-coast. Those who reach Khartoum, or the towns of Lower Egypt, are sold to the wealthy, and generally take a high position in the harems, often becoming the wives of their purchasers. In the Soudan I have met several charming Abyssinian ladies, who, having married European residents, have become perfectly civilized; proving the race is capable of ACTUAL BUSINESS.

"The blood is the mathematical or any one that should From the blood we can the painful and sorrow."
The last instance that has come to our knowledge, in which enterprise and self-possession were admirably mingled, occurred at the recent execution of a criminal in Washington Territory. Just as he was about to be swung off, and after he had remarked to the sheriff that he had nothing further to say, a real estate agent, whose office was in his hat, forced himself to the front and up the steps of the scaffold, and jointly addressing the criminal and the sheriff, said: "If the gentleman who occupies the platform will kindly yield for a few minutes, I would like to make a few remarks upon the cheap homestead lots at Dobson's Hole I am now offering for sale." The polite request was assented to, and after a brief summary of the advantages presented by the locality, the sheriff resumed his duties, pulled the cap over the "gentleman's" countenance, and permitted him to drop.—Harper's.
The Grangers of California are now making arrangements for the organization of a Grangers' Homestead Association. It is estimated that about one thousand persons come into the State from the East every week; that a large portion are seeking homes, and that many of them are Grangers. In order to purchase lands at the cheapest prices, it is proposed that the association shall buy large tracts, which may be obtained at from two to ten dollars per acre, on ten years' time and at low rates of interest, this land to be distributed among members of the Homestead Association at cost. The principal place of business of the association will be Santa Barbara, which of course will be a great advantage to that county and southern California.
Here is another characteristic anecdote of Phil. Kearney, who lost his left arm in Mexico. At Fair Oaks, while standing in a very tempest of death, with his sword uplifted in command, Gen. O. O. Howard had his right arm carried away. That night, after Howard had suffered amputation, and was lying spent and racked with pain in a box-car which was to take him to would be Christians; whereas all I seen have been Gallas—a Mohammed race. In the Soudan I have met several charming Abyssinian ladies, who, having married European residents, have become perfectly civilized; proving the race is capable of great advancement.—Macmillan's Magazine.

FRUIT—The market is supplied with a choice assortment of Fruit. Some cling-stone Peaches from the mountains are coming in now, which are very handsome. Grapes of every variety and of excellent quality are in plentiful supply. Apples and Pears sell readily, excepting some of the common varieties of Pears, which never sell to advantage while Bartiest and Seckel are in market. There is considerable inquiry now for Dried Fruit for shipment East. Prices vary very much, according to the style of package, as well as the mode of drying. Mr. E.D. Waters, at this Fair, is taking family orders for his superior products as follows, all packed in boxes of 10 and 20 ba: Apples, 25c; Apricots, 30c; Pears, 30c, etc. Dried Fruits by the Alden evaporating process are attracting much attention. The immense saving in freight in transporting these goods to distant points is worthy of careful consideration. To illustrate: One case of Alden Onions, weighing 88 ba gross, is equivalent for all culinary purposes to 350 ba, or 5 bags of fresh. Then again: One case of Alden Peas, weighing gross 43 ba, is equivalent to and will go as far in family use as 7 cases of Canned Peas, weighing 350 ba. The same rule will apply to all the Fruits and Vegetables prepared under this process. The apnexed data are convincing proof of its cheapness and economy:

ACTUAL BUSINESS PRACTICE.
It is safe to say that no mere theoretical course of instruction, however perfect of its kind, can be depended upon to impart a reliable knowledge of the intricacies of business and book-keeping. Theory, to be sure, must form the foundation where we build; but to obtain a satisfactory course of business training we must go beyond this and have actual practice. This discipline will prepare the student for the participation in commercial transactions as no mere text book theory ever can. By its aid young men are enabled to achieve success on business principles.
The system of Actual Practice as carried out by HEALD'S BUSINESS COLLEGE has reached a degree of perfection, and forms one of the most thorough and complete courses of business training ever introduced into any institution. This, in part, accounts for the remarkable success of this school, and its popularity among people of the whole Pacific coast. By its aid, young men are enabled to enter upon the duties of an active and useful life. In order to carry out this system, the school-room has been fitted up to represent a miniature world of business. There are in active operation banks, commission houses, jobbing and importing establishments, wholesale and retail stores, etc. In all of these establishments an actual business is carried on by the student, who acts in turn as clerk, salesman, book-keeper, cashier, agent, merchant, broker, and banker. In these various capacities he makes out all varieties of business and legal papers, and writes up notes, drafts, bills, statements of accounts, orders, receipts, invoices, accounts sales, certificates, bills of lading, contracts, deeds, leases, bills of sale, articles of partnership, etc. As a merchant he buys sells ships, consigns, orders, barters, insures, and keeps complete sets of books, showing a concise and systematic record of his entire business transactions.
As a banker he receives and pays out deposits, makes collections, effects loans, discounts mercantile paper, buys and sells bills of exchange, issues certificates of deposit and keeps the books of the bank, issuing and transferring stock, and entering up the results of each day's transactions in the proper books.
This is only a short description of the practical workings of the ACTUAL BUSINESS DEPARTMENT, and can convey but a faint idea of its merits. This department, to be fully appreciated, must be seen; and the proprietors cordially invite all feeing an interest in the cause of practical education to call at the College, and witness the miniature world of business in operation.
For full particulars regarding the College, Course of Study, Expenses, etc., call at the College Office, 24 Post Street, or address for circular E. P. HEALD, San Francisco, Cal.

"The blood is the life." This is as true as a mathematical or any other scientific proposition, and one that should influence every physician. From the blood we derive our strength and mental capabilities. When this source is corrupted, the painful and sorrow-producing effects are visible.

DISEASES OF THE BLOOD.
By R. V. PIERCE, M. D., of the World's Dispensary, Buffalo, N. Y.
Tetter, Salt Rheum, Scald Head, St. Anthony's Fire, Rose Rash or Erysipelas, Ringworms, Pimples, Blotches, Spots, Eruptions, Pustules, Buils, Carbuncles, Sore Eyes, Rough Skin, Scurf, Serofolous Sores and Swellings, Fever Sores, White Swellings, Tumors, Old Sores, and Swellings.
"The blood is the life." This is as true as a mathematical or any other scientific proposition, and one that should influence every physician. From the blood we derive our strength and mental capabilities. When this source is corrupted, the painful and sorrow-producing effects are visible in many shapes. From our blood our systems are built up and kept in repair. The strength of our constitutions and our powers of endurance, and the withstanding of disease-producing agencies with impunity, depend largely upon the condition in which the blood is kept. If it holds in suspension or solution vile festering poisons, all organic functions are weakened thereby. Settling upon vital and important organs, as the brain, lungs, liver, and kidneys, the effect of these poisons in the blood is, many times, most disastrous. Hence, it behooves every one to keep the blood in a perfectly healthy condition, and the more especially does this apply at this particular season of the year. When you purify your blood to cure Salt Rheum or any Erysipelas humor, you not only cure those diseases, but you put your system in such an improved condition that you are not so liable to any other disease. No matter what the external or exciting cause may be, the real or direct cause of a large proportion of all chronic or lingering diseases is bad blood. The multifarious forms in which it manifests itself would form subjects upon which I might write volumes. But as all the varied forms of disease which depend upon bad blood, a few of which I have enumerated at the head of this article, are cured, or best treated, by such medicines as take up from this fluid and excrete from the system the noxious elements, it is not of practical importance that I should describe each minutely. For instance, medical authorities describe about fifty varieties of skin disease; but as they all require for their cure very similar treatment, it is of no practical utility to know just what name to apply to a certain form of skin disease, so you know how best to cure it. Then again, I might go on and describe various kinds of Scrofulous Sores, Fever Sores, White Swellings, Enlarged Glands, and Ulcers of varying appearance; but as all these various-appearing manifestations of bad blood are cured by uniform means, I deem such a course unnecessary. Thoroughly cleanse the blood, which is the great fountain of life, and good digestion, a fair skin, buoyant spirits, vital strength, and soundness of constitution will all return to us.
The Liver is the great depurating, or blood-cleaning, organ of the system. Set this great "housekeeper" of our health at work, and the foul corruptions which gender in the blood and rot out, as it were, the machinery of life, are gradually expelled from the system. For this purpose my Golden Medical Discovery and Purgative Pellets are pre-eminently the articles needed. They cure every kind of humor, except cancer from the worst scrofula to the common pimple, blotch, or eruption. Great eating ulcers kindly heal under their mighty curative influence. Enlarged glands, tumors, and swellings dwindle away and disappear under the influence of these great resolvents. The system being put under their influence for a few weeks, the skin becomes clear, smooth, soft, and velvety, and being illuminated with the glow of perfect health from within, true beauty stands forth in all its glory.
The effects of all medicines which operate upon the system through the medium of the blood are necessarily somewhat slow, no matter how good the remedy employed. The cure of all these diseases, however, is with the use of these most potent agents only a matter of time.
I do not wish to place my Golden Medical Discovery in the catalogue of quack patent nostrums by recommending it to cure every disease, nor do I so recommend it; on the contrary; there are hundreds of diseases that I acknowledge it will not cure; but what I do claim is that there is but one form of blood disease that it will not cure, and that disease is cancer. I do not recommend my Discovery for that disease yet. I know it to be the most searching blood cleaner and LEDGER CO., 114 Monroe St., Chicago, IL.

Most medicines which are advertised as blood purifiers or liver medicines contain either mercury in some form, or potassium or iodine variously combined. All of these agents have a strong tendency to break down the blood corpuscles, and debilitate and otherwise permanently injure the human system, and should therefore be discarded.
My Golden Medical Discovery, on the other hand, being composed of fluid extracts of native plants, barks and roots, will in no case produce injury, its effects being strengthening and curative only. Sarsaparilla, which used to enjoy quite a reputation as a blood purifier, is a remedy of thirty years ago, and may well give place, as it is doing, to the more positive and valuable vegetable alternatives which later medical investigation and discovery have brought to light.
Both Discovery and Pellets are sold by all first class druggists in all parts of the world.
DOCTORS COULDN’T HELP HIM.
John H. Wilson, Esq., Meigsville, Morgan Co., O., writes: When I was 12 or 15 years of age, I took what is called King’s Evil or Scrofula, and by constant doctoring it would heal in one place and break out in another. It also broke out in my left ear. I sent ten miles for the first bottle of your Discovery, which did me more good than all other medicines I ever used. I am 28 years old, and doctored with five doctors; not one of them helped me so much as one bottle of your Discovery. I am well and able to do a good day’s work.
SALT RHEUM AND EREPTIONS CURED.
Mrs. A. W. Williamsa, Claverack, Columbia County, N.Y., writes: I had been afflicted with Salt Rheum in its worst form for a great many years, until I bought your Golden Medical Discovery, and took two bottles and a half, and was entirely cured. From my shoulders to my hands I will entirely covered with eruptions, also on face and body. I was also afflicted with Rheumatism, so that I walked only with great difficulty, and that is entirely cured.
HIP-JOINT DISEASE CURED.
J. M. Robinson, West Grove Station, Iowa, July 14, writes: My wife first became lame nine years ago. Swellings would appear and disappear on her hip, and she was gradually becoming reduced, and her whole system rotten with disease. In 1771 a swelling broke on her hip, dis-
