SATURDAY...OCTOBER 2, 1874
Kleinigkeiten.
Every body, who went to Los Angeles last week, returned with one of Diamond's latest silk-hats.
School Superintendent Peek was in town in the early part of the week, looking after school matters.
We insert to-day the professional card of Dr. J. H. Yocum, who has located himself permanently at this place.
Track-laying on the Anaheim extension was commenced on Thursday. The grading force are now between Metcalf's and town.
The Board of Supervisors will meet on Monday. The Santa Ana bridge and the rate of taxation for 1874 will be the principal topics for discussion.
J. M. Wright, recently teacher of the school at La Ballona, has been appointed to the charge of the school in Santa Ana school district. He assumed his new position on Wednesday.
A general meeting of the stockholders of the Bolsa Chica Wharf Company has been ordered to be held on next Saturday at 1 O'clock. Business of much importance will be presented.
Letters addressed to Miss Mary Jones are detained for want of proper direction, no State or county being given. The following letters are unavailable: L. Robinson, Santa Ana; J. R. Beecher, Tustin; C. Travis, Orange.
Rev. W. A. Knighten, has been assigned by the Methodist Episcopal Conference to the Ventura Station of that church. Rev. A. Bland will succeed him in the Orange ministry during the ensuing year.
Mrs. Cunze, a daughter of Mr. L. Parker, was bitten by a rattlesnake on Thursday. She was promptly placed under the influence of brandy, and although suffering much from the effects of the bite, no serious consequences are apprehended.
Certificates of stock, by-laws, receipts, bill-heads, letter-heads, cards, posters and every imaginable kind of printing done at the Southern California Court.
The McDonald Case—The cold blooded killing of his wife by John McDonald is still fresh in the memories of all, and the fact besides that public sentiment was so outraged by the brutality of the act that, but for a prompt and decided action on the part of Sheriff Rowland, the murderer would have been called to account for his crime before the tribunal of Judge Lynch. Last Monday McDonald was placed on trial before the District Court, and hardly had the jury been empanelled before it was discovered that the indictment found against him by the Grand Jury was seriously defective. A motion was made by the acting District Attorney to withdraw the case from the jury and refer it to the Grand Jury. This motion was over-ruled by Judge Sepulveda, as offering another assistance to the eventual escape of the criminal, and the jury was instructed by him that "the indictment in this case, found on the 18th day of August, 1874, accuses John McDonald, the defendant herein, of the crime of murder, by wilfully and maliciously, and of his malice aforethought, killing and murdering one Louisa McDonald, and the prosecution show by their own proof that the name of the deceased was Eliza McDonald, showing thereby a variance between the proof and the indictment, and the Court, deeming that this variance is material, instructs you to render a verdict of not guilty by reason of such variance." Unfortunately however the jury appears not to have paid sufficient attention to the explicit instructions of Judge Sepulveda and rendered a verdict as follows: "We the jury, find the defense t, John McDonald, not guilty as charged in the indictment."
Upon the discharge of the jury the Court ordered that the case be re-submitted to the next Grand Jury of the County of Los Angeles, and that the defendant be remanded to the custody of the Sheriff. Defendant's counsel then moved that his client be discharged from custody upon the grounds that nothing appears in the verdict, as required by statute that it was rendered on account of variance between the indictment and the proof, and that the Court was not authorized to go beyond the language of the verdict, and that the defendant has passed through a Constitutional jeopardy." This motion was over-ruled however and the defendant was remanded to the custody of the Sheriff.
Conference to the Ventura Station of that church. Rev. A. Bland will succeed him in the Orange ministry during the ensuing year.
— Mrs. Cunze, a daughter of Mr. L. Parker, was bitten by a rattlesnake on Thursday. She was promptly placed under the influence of brandy, and although suffering much from the effects of the bite, no serious consequences are apprehended.
— Certificates of stock, by-laws, receipts, bill-heads, letter-heads, cards, posters and every imaginable kind of printing done at the Southern California office in a workmanlike manner and at low rates. Our type are all new and of the latest design. Call and see specimens.
— It has been rumored that the Southern Pacific railway was about to sink for artesian water near the old Adobe station on the San Joaquin. Mr. Chas. E. French of that rancho informs us that the rumor possibly originated from the preparations, now being made by the San Joaquin Company, to bore at that place.
— It was announced early in the week that the steamer Senator would carry passengers from San Francisco on its down trip this week at $5 per head. It was also reported that the Taber would resume the opposition business, but since then it has transpired that the Taber has been "interviewed," and the passenger tariff remains unchanged.
— The following deeds were filed in the office of the County Recorder during the week: R. Helman et al to W. T. Ashil undivided of N W of N E of N W of section 16 T 4 S R 10 W, 10 acres, $1,500...J. Fristech to N. O. Stafford—N W of section 10 T 5 S, R 10 W, 160 acres $1,000...Mutual deeds of partition between J. West et al., of certain lands in Sepulveda tract, Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana.
— List of letters at Anaheim post-office uncalled for during the week ending Oct 1st: Manual Arballo, Manzo Bernardo & Bro., G. Cota, E. M. Cole, Jesus Corella, Paul Carterry, William Callahan, G. W. Freeman, J. W. Gibson, James Hamilton, F. Hildelrandt, Geo. Heffner, H. Hutchings, A.Kohler, M. List 2, E. H. Mix, Milton Messix, J. Robinson, Thomas M. Shaw, Mrs. C.A. Staunton, A. Slocum,Miss Mary Smith Preston T. Stewart, Wm. L Sidwell, J. Thompson, J. Tibbits, R. Turnbull, J. M. Wright.
— The gentleman, of whom we write, was not like Mr. Milton Perkins, who possessed an insane idea to threat every white male citizen he met upon the street, but he did express his willingness loudly and forebly to box all male citizens, white or yellow, for the drinks, and all of this was done early on Sunday morning. His line of conduct did not get him into jail, but he found out before nine o'clock A.M. which barkeeper kicked the hardest.
— It is with emotions of the most polignant regret that we can only chronicle as the result of the saturnalia, which disgraced Los Angeles street on last Sunday, one man slightly cut and one shot, not seriously jury of the County of Los Angeles, and that the defendant be remanded to the custody of the Sheriff. Defendant's counsel then moved that his client be discharged from custody upon the grounds that nothing appears in the verdict, as required by statute that it was rendered on account of variance between the indictment and the proof, and that the Court was not authorized to go beyond the language of the verdict, and that the defendant has passed through a Constitutional jeopardy.-This motion was overruled however and the defendant was remanded to the custody of the Sheriff in accordance with the order of the Court. It is rumored that Judge O'Melveny of the County Court will issue a venire for a special Grand Jury, returnable immediately, by whom the legal irregularities of the indictment can be rectified.
ORANGE ITEMS.-We learn from our correspondent at Orange that: Mr. Knighten returned on Tuesday. He will soon leave again for Ventura, where he will be stationed during the coming year....Mr. Jenkins has his new house nearly completed. He expects five families to settle near him in a few months.....Mr. Herward reports obtaining twelve pounds of grapes from Museat cottings one year old, and twenty pounds from roots two years old....The building of the hotel is progressing finely. They expect to get a roof on in thirty days....The Grangers have strong hopes of getting their co-operative store in working order soon....The residence of Mr. Joseph Beach is rapidly becoming one of the beautiful sights of Orange. This is not so much on account of the architectural beauty of the building, although it is a nice, cosy, little cottage, but its attraction consists in that it is embowered in a luxurious profusion of semi-tropical trees and shrubbery of every description....Most all the Orange people take the southerns CALIFORNIAN. Moral: They have sense.
TUSTIN CITY CORRESPONDENT writes to us that: Our post-office changed hands this week. Mr. H. H. Dickerman takes charge, and the mail will hereafter be opened at his store. This transfer seems to please every one....I hear of new land sales every day. Mr. W. W. Martin has sold his home place to one of the new arrivals, and will build again in the town, and a town it will be one of these days....Mr.E.R.Nieoles sold a few days since twenty acres of his farm to Mr.M.C.Baker.of Los Angeles....The hotel is putting on a new coat of paintwhich improves its appearance very much....Most of our farmers are busy husking corn, and laborers are in great demand.
SANTA ANA ITEMS.-Our correspondent at Santa Ana sends us the following items of news: Camp meeting closed on Monday last.During a portion of time the evenings were unfavorable for,a large attendance, but nevertheless much spirit was manifested and much good was realized....The weather here for the past few days has
possessed an insane idea to treat every white male citizen he met upon the street, but he did express his willingness loudly and forebly to box all male citizens, white or yellow, for the drinks, and all of this was done early on Sunday morning. His line of conduct didn't get him into jail, but he found out before nine o'clock A.M. which barkeeper klecked the hardest.
—It is with emotions of the most polignant regret that we can only chronicle as the result of the saturnalia, which disgraced Los Angeles street on last Sunday, one man slightly cut and one shot, not seriously however. The hoodlums, participating, would undoubtedly have obtained the thanks of the entire community if they had finished up the day by cutting each other's throats, but as they never leave undone what they should not do, and never do anything that they should, they didn't. It may gratify some however to learn that the man shot cannot sit down on account of the peculiar locality of the wound.
—Monday and Tuesday were field days for the legal luminaries of Anaheim, and the field of battle was in Justice Johnson's court at Santa Ana. Ah Hoo was the defendant and Ah Soo was the complainant, or it was just the other way; but what's in a name to a mind conscious of its own integrity? McDonald probably thinks there is a great deal, and—however as we do not wish to emulate the weakness of a friend, we return to the relation of the sorrows and tribulations of Ah Hoo and Ah Soo. One of them was accused by the other of having beaten him, and gouged him, and drawn a deadly weapon upon him and otherwise treated him to a few of those "spurs which patient merit of the unworthy takes" but which are repugnant to the manly bosom of a proud Calestial. The accused repelled with defiant scorn the base accusation, and "right here they hitched." All the lawyers, some on one side and the balance on the other, went over and on Monday there was a trial before the Judge Solus and on Tuesday there was a trial by jury, and on all the charges the defendant was acquitted. The minds of those two Celestials are now filled with admiration of the "Mellecan man's" law, which compels him, who administers the beating, to pay his lawyer, and which with strict impartiality exacts a similar penalty from the beaten.
SANTA ANA ITEMS.—Our correspondent at Santa Ana sends us the following items of news: Camp meeting closed on Monday last. During a portion of the time the evenings were unfavorable for a large attendance, but nevertheless much spirit was manifested and much good was realized....The weather here for the past few days has been very warm, quite as much so as any I have experienced this year....Mr. R. E. Hewitt returned overland from the North on Thursday of last week. He found much of interest on the route, and believes that manner of traveling much more preferable than that of steamer.
THE BALL.—The fashionable ball night in Anaheim is, unfortunately for the CALIFORNIAN, on Friday, and owing to this night having been selected by the managers of the Cajon School Ball we were reluctantly forced to abstain from an active participation in the festivities of last evening. However we devoted a few moments to a brief inspection of the ball room Just before going to press, and the regret, already experienced, became a thousand more polignant as we behold the evident enjoyment of all. Socially the affair was a decided success, and we trust that some pecuniary benefit has resulted to the school district.
—Rev. Mr. Mosher will hold divine services at the Presbyterian Church tomorrow morning at 11 o'clock.....Episcopal services will be held at Enterprise Hall to-morrow at 11 o'clock.

Quartz Mills and Channel Mines.
There is one peculiarly about the miner of California at present which has been frequent noticed. Whether the quartz mills are whirled in the tunnels, in the place digging on the earth, the ravins, galeas, and canes, the miners are all investing a portion of their share change in tickets for the Last Grand Concert of the Public Library of Kansas which takes place November 8th. Indeed they are not singular in this respect, for with $2,500,000 in cash to be distributed, and one prize to every five tickets, and the prizes (20,000 of them) in all) ranging from $29,000 to $64, the whole country is rushing to be in time for a share this grand distribution.
The Idea of a Universal Medicine is last realized in Dr. Walker’s California Vinegar Bitton. This concentrated essence of the finest medicinal herbs and roots in the Western hemisphere, eradicates all diseases which have not undermined the sources of vitality, and in chronicle Indication, Nervous Headache, Constipation of the Liver, Rheumatism, Gout, General Debility, and innumerable narcotics and cautious disorders, it is a specific absolute and infallible.
