Southern Californian SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 1874. Kleinigkeiten. Only one hundred and eighty shares of stock in the Bolsa Chica Wharf remain unsubscribed for: Rev. W. A. Knighten is absent in San Francisco, attending the sessions of the Methodist Episcopal Conference. The suit of A. B. Chapman vs W. H. Potts will come up for trial before Judge Sepulveda on Tuesday. Mr. Dreyfus pioneered in the vintage season yesterday at his works in the "Schenk" vineyards. Mr. J. M. Casey will return by the outgoing steamer to his home in Iowa. Wednesday will be Independence Day with the Mexican portion of the population. The Board of Directors of the Bolsa-Chica Wharf will hold an adjourned meeting on Monday at 2 P.M. at the office of the President. Mr. Theo Reiser has commenced the excavation necessary for the foundation of a brewery building upon his lot on 4th South street. Irev. A. M. Campbell, President of Wilson College, Wilmington, will deliver a lecture on the subject of Education at Enterprise Hall on Wednesday evening next at 8 o'clock. Two of our livery stable men attempted to revive the manly art of self-defence yesterday evening. Judge Bailey will see whose fault it was at nine o'clock this morning. The following deeds have been filed in the office of the County Recorder during the past week: Leonard Parker to Heimann Koster—20 acres in rancho San Juan y Cajon de Santa Ana; $300. Gen. John Baldwin of Los Angeles has recently resumed the practice of his profession, Civil Engineering. We take pleasure in commending him to the public as a thoroughly competent engineer. Blanken's Celebrated Semi-Tropical Bitters cheers the sad, revives the old, makes weariness forget his toll, and fear her danger, and is sold at a ridiculously low price at the Anaheim Jewish New Year—In our house of last Saturday it was stated that the Jewish New Year had commenced at sunset of the evening preceding. In this we erred; for the correction of this error, and for the information given below we are indebted to the courtesy of Mr. M. A. Mendleson. The New Year commenced last evening at sunset, and in accordance with the Jewish Calendar we have now entered upon the year 5635. Two days, commencing yesterday evening at sunset and ending Sunday evening at the same hour, are devoted to those religious ceremonies, used by the members of the faith, to commemorate the time when the Angel of the Lord slew the first-born of each Egyptian family. To-day and to-morrow at 8:30 A.M. the members of the Jewish Church, residing in and around Anaheim, will meet at the house of Mr. Cohen where religious services will be held under the direction of Messrs. Mendelson and Cohen of this place and Mr. Kolsky of Orange. This month and the first few days of the next are prolific in religious holidays. On the 14th will occur the Fast of Guedalyah; on the 21st will be "The Day of Atonement;" and on the 29th and 27th will commence Sucot, a festival which will occupy nine full days and during the conclusion of which occur the evening called Sheminee Aseret, and the day called Simhat Torah, or the time when the Chosen People of Israel received and accepted the Good Book, presented them by their Divine Ruler. The three days, being respectively the first day of the New Year, the Day of Atonement, and Sheminee Aseret, are considered from traditionary usage the most holy of all the days of the year. The Talmud teaches that on the first of these days (to-day) the whole human race is brought one by one before Deity; that in the second each one is judged and his futurity is determined; and that on the last day (Sheminee Aseret) the recording angel writes down in the Great Book of Fate the verdict regarding each individual existence. DISTRESSING ACCIDENT—On Monday morning last there occurred at Westminster one of those accidents, which at times happen seemingly for no other purpose than to make more inscrutable the ways of an All Wise Providence. A Mrs. Goldsworthy of FILED in the office of the County Recorder during the past week: Leonard Parker to Heimann Koster—20 acres in rancho San Juan y Cajon de Santa Ana; $300. Gen. John Baldwin of Los Angeles has recently resumed the practice of his profession, Civil Engineering. We take pleasure in commending him to the public as a thoroughly competent engineer. Blanken's Celebrated Semi-Tropical Bitters cheers the sad, revives the old, makes weariness forget his toll, and fear her danger, and is sold at a ridiculously low price at the Anaheim Drug Store. Stewart & Co. are engaged in boring a deep surface well in Mrs. Koll's vineyard on Palm street. It will be laid with double pipe, and will only need additional depth to be transformed into an artesian well. He not only allowed us to help yourself, but actually assisted us to pick them. There were nearly a dozen different varieties. And Mr. Korn said he had another kind. But they were at the other end of the vineyard. Certificates of stock, by-laws, receipts, bill-heads, letter-heads, cards, posters and every imaginable kind of printing done at the Southern California office in a workmanlike manner and at low rates. Our type are all new and of the latest design. Call and see specimens. Divine Service will be held at the Catholic Church on to-morrow morning at 10 o'clock....Divine Service will be conducted at Enterprise Hall to-morrow at 11 o'clock A. M. by Rev. Mr. Loop of San Gabriel....Prayer meeting and the reading of the Scriptures at the Presbyterian Church tomorrow morning at 12 o'clock. It will be seen by reference to our advertising columns that the management of the Planters' Hotel has again undergone a change, C.C. Higby retiring from the firm. The establishment will hence-forward be under the sole charge of "Frank" Lafauchelle, who knows well the role of "mine host." Messrs. Cowan and Estes of Anaheim are engaged at Los Angeles in the pleasing occupation of assisting Judge O'Melveny to clear his criminal docket. Their special business this week was in seeing whether Manuel Sepulveda did it. He didn't do it, which was perjury. San Juan Capistrano was aroused from "Camouka" and the even tenor of its way a few nights ago by the occurrence of quite a large fire. Four large stacks of barley, just ready for the thresher, and belonging to Mr. Henry Charles, were totally destroyed. The fire is supposed to have been the work of an incendiary. The County Board of Examiners granted a second grade certificate to Mrs. Mary E. Martin, and a third grade certificate to Miss Sylvia Hartley, graduate of Mr. J.M. Guinn's department. We understand that Mrs. Martin will take charge of the Orangethorpe school, and Miss Hartley that of Cajon district. DISTRESSING ACCIDENT...On Monday morning last there occurred at Westminster one of those accidents, which at times happen seemingly for no other purpose than to make more inscrutable the ways of an All Wise Providence. A Mrs. Goldsworthy of that place was engaged in house-cleaning and was working in a room which contained upon a rack near the door a gun. The ramrod of the gun had been left accidentally projecting beyond the barrel, and so much so that a violent puff of wind, suddenly causing the door to shut, dislodged thereby the gun from its position, and threw it down upon the floor. One of its barrels, loaded with buckshot, was discharged by the violence of the fall and the contents passed through a partition into an adjoining room, thence through a barrel of ashes and thence into the head of an infant child of this unfortunate lady, killing it almost instantly. A Silver Wedding...On Wednesday afternoon last, the friends, acquaintances, children, grand-children and children soon-to-be of Mr. and Mrs. H. Werder gathered together under the family roof-tree of that excellent couple in order to witness the ratification of those solenan words in which twenty-five long years ago a youth and maiden had pledged each to the other, to bide together until Death should come between. It was a joyous anniversary for the silver bride and bridegroom, for each succeeding year had but served to renew in still closer bonds the tie, formed in the far away Fatherland; and right merrily did the guests do honor to the day whilst partaking of the goodly cheer of their worthy hosts. As the silvery cords of their wedded life gradually assume the golden life gradually assume the golden life gradually assume the golden life gradually assume the golden life gradually assume the golden life gradually assume the golden life gradually assume the golden life gradually assume the golden life gradually assume the golden life gradually assume the golden life gradually assume the golden life gradually assume the golden life gradually assume the golden life gradually assume the golden life gradually assume the golden life gradually assume the golden life gradually assume the golden life gradually assume the golden life gradually assume the golden life gradually assume the golden life gradually assume the golden life gradually assume THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS...The Board of Supervisors met in regular session on Monday. Votes for Supervisor of First District were canvassed, and Gabriel Allen was declared elected. Total vote 273. Sealed proposals for building two bridges over the Wilmington and Anaheim road, and over the Anaheim and Spadra road were ordered to be advertised. The resignation of H.M. Mitchell as Public Administrator was accepted. The 28th day of September was set for the location of the Santa Ana river bridge. Proposals for building a bridge over New River near the Telegraph road were ordered to be advertised for Tuesday Oct., 6th was appointed to hear arguments pro and con regarding the location of the New River bridge upon the Telegraph road. The Board then adjourned until the first Monday in October. of its way a few nights ago by the occurrence of quite a large fire. Four large stacks of barley, just ready for the thresher and belonging to Mr. Henry Charles, were totally destroyed. The fire is supposed to have been the work of an incendiary. The County Board of Examiners granted a second grade certificate to Mrs. Mary E. Martin, and a third grade certificate to Miss Sylvia Hartley, graduate of Mr. J. M. Guinn's department. We understand that Mrs. Martin will take charge of the Orangethorpe school, and Miss Hartley that of Cajon district. Our young friend, Ernest Parker, succeeded the other night in shooting and killing a large wild cat, which for some time past had been depredating upon his mother's chickens. As Ernest is a very good boy generally and as so young a lad deserves some credit for his watchfulness and care over his mother's interests we say to him "Good boy, and very well done." The Los Angeles and San Bernardino Land Company somewhat resemble that actor of olden time, who wore his mask so long his features took its likeness. The application of this remark is, as Captain Cuttle would say, in the bearing thereof, The Los Angeles and San Bernardino Land Company say they shortly intend the construction of the big ditch and they actually believe what they say. Somebody, who lives in, around or near Anaheim, is fond of Currants, and of this especial weakness a distant friend of Somebody is cognizant. The consequence was that a box of currants under charge of Uncle Sam, started for Anaheim, and that a currant jam arrived on Thursday night, on which evening everybody was the recipient of Somebody's currants. In all the news there was nothing but jam. The new administration at the Planters' will be ushered in this evening by spreading a free lunch. It is needless to say that all the delicacies of the season, and a good many not in season, will be set forth for the delection of the public. "Frank" knows that the turnpike road to people's hearts is through their mouths, and everybody knows that he knows it. And then besides Dick Barham waits upon the bibulously inclined, and all of Watsonville, that can get there, will be "thar or tharabouta." A. A. These are questions which the great American public has right to ask, and it has also the right to expect a candid and satisfactory reply. The preparation is a mild and gentle saline cathartic, alternative and tonic, and is most carefully prepared in the form of a snow-white powder, containing all the wonderful medical properties of the far-famed Seltzer Springs of Germany. Of its effects, those who have tested the preparation are the best judges, and they decide over their own signature, that the preparation will promptly relieve indigestion, regulate the flow of the bile, cure every species of headache, tranquilize the nervous system, refresh and invigorate the weak, mitigate the pangs of rheumatisms, neutralizes acid in the stomach, cleanses and tones the bowels, assists the falling appetite, curse the heartburn. If you are a sufferer, give this remedy one trial, and it will convince you of the above facts. Sold by all druggists. Los Angeles, Ca Orders From the Country Solicited. E. E. FISHER. L. W.
