CEO. C. KNOX...EDITOR.
SATURDAY...SEPTEMBER 12, 1874
Something like the final result of an agitation of slavery issues, as forebodied by the great statesman, Henry Clay, during the first discussions of that question in 1843, is beginning to cast lengthening shadows over our national future. Secretary Bristow's effort to re-organize the Secret Service Bureau in the Treasury Department and the President's order for an armed occupation of certain of the Southern States are strongly suggestive of a tendency to an undue influence of the military power.
The object in view in the organization of the Band of Hope, which has recently commenced to bestow beams of comfort and gild the black horror of the benightedness of our City of the Angels, is "to induce children to grow up without forming an appetite for liquor or tobacco"; and, when these hot-house exudations from the Gradgrind school reach their full maturity, they too can pray upon occasion, talk of heaven, turn up their goggling eyeballs, rail at vice, dissemble lie, and preach" moral miscegenation and local option.
That liberty is sometimes allowed to pluck justice by the nose under the admirable workings of the California Code was well illustrated in the trial of one Moore, arraigned before our County Court during the past week for assault with intent to murder. The Code allows a jury the power to pass upon a prisoner's sanity, and subsequently to decide in regard to his criminality. In the case in question both of these acts were performed by the same Jury. After a decision that the prisoner was perfectly sane, a ver-

ABOUT THE ANAHEIM BRANCH.
We present to our readers this week an outline map, showing the route which will probably be adopted by the Southern Pacific Company in passing through Anaheim and extension. We say probably because a right of way through the lands of every owner upon the line has not yet been obtained although no serious difficulty, except in the case of H. Werder, presents itself. Mr. Werder's vineyard, as will be seen by reference to the map, is cut diagonally in two almost equal portions, and although his lands will be materially
A SAN FRANCISCO Grand Jury has ignored the charges against De. Young for assault with intent to murder. This charge had been made in consequence of De. Young's attack upon Napthaly near the post-office buildings in San Francisco some months ago. Judge Stanley of the County Court, commenting upon this action upon the part of the jury, says: I am unable to account for the ignoring of the charge by the Grand Jury upon any hypothesis consistent with a proper understanding of or a due regard for the obligations of their official oath by those Grand Jurors, whose action resulted in the dismissal of the charge." The case will be presented to the next Grand Jury.
In President Stillson's address at Milwaukie on Wednesday during the opening exercises of the Wisconsin State Fair he briefly made mention of the consolidation of railroad interests and the centralization of an immense wealth which has caused such an alarm among the citizens of the North-western States. Whilst charging that railroad corporations have been guilty of much bad faith and have done much to bring about present difficulties, he at the same time admitted that great aid had been rendered by them in the commercial development of the country, and enunciated the axiom that whilst the people should always tenaciously protect their rights, they should never forget justice. Summing up he said: "All, we should ask, is the fair line as between producer, consumer and carrier, and let us endeavor to solve this question of cheap transportation wisely, dispassionately, and in strict justice to all."
We glean from the Los Angeles Express that a Presbyterian Convocation, held in San Francisco last week, after outline map, showing the route which will probably be adopted by the Southern Pacific Company in passing through Anaheim and extension. We say probably because a right of way through the lands of every owner upon the line has not yet been obtained although no serious difficulty, except in the case of H. Werder, presents itself. Mr. Werder's vineyard, as will be seen by reference to the map, is cut diagonally in two almost equal portions, and although his lands will be materially enhanced in value by the adoption of this route, still the present damage presents itself undoubtedly to his mind much more apparently.
The road will enter the extension of Anaheim at the South-west corner of the tract belonging to D. W. C. Cowan and crossing immediately the Anaheim Landing wagon road, will pass diagonally through ten-acre tracts belonging to Helman & George, A. Heimann, and J. M. Guinn. At the North-east corner of Mr. Guinn's property the road intersects the foot of Centre Street extended and thence through the lands of Tim Boege, Jno. Adams, C. Wilkins and H. Boege to West street. Up to this point the right of way has been permanently secured. The line then cuts off the south-west corner of Cahill's vineyard, and runs thence through the lands of H. Werder, Ben Dreyfus and Helmann & George to the depot location on lots 27 and 26, belonging to the Land Company. A strip of land 500 feet in width and 2200 in length has been donated to the railway for depot purposes. The railway will traverse an air-line from Los Nietos depot to the Anaheim terminus, and will be 16 1-10 miles in length. Grading has been completed as far as Sproule's farm in Sycamore Grove, and is being pushed rapidly ahead. Without further and unforeseen hinderances occurring to prevent, the Company propose to have the road completed and within running order within the next sixty-days.
AN IMPORTANT QUESTION.
The number of brick buildings, which are now in the course of erection in Anaheim, and the impossibility of changing their locations after completion except at a great expense naturally brings to the surface the subject of proper boundaries to those valuable tracts of land, whose central situations necessitates the construction of permanent improvements. The subject promises to be one of much future vexation, not alone on account of a negligence which has resulted in the
WE glean from the Los Angeles Express that a Presbyterian Convocation, held in San Francisco last week, after devoting a portion of their time to Spiritualism avowed their belief in the supposition that the Spiritual world is allowed to hold communications with the living, but at the same time asserted that this privilege was only accorded to devils. The whys and wherefores of these sapient conclusions are not mentioned, although our informant devotes some little space to a refutation of the latter clause of this additional article of faith. Probably the better disposition of the subject would be to consider it as a conundrum, give it up, and console ourselves with the reflection that we can not well be punished if we should occasionally step without the narrow road "since all our guides dispute which is the way."
JOHN C. HOGAN of Compton furnishes the Express of Los Angeles with certain interesting statistics regarding the artesian wells of Florence and Compton. We condense from his communication that there are around Compton, West of the railroad sixteen wells, which are flowing, and thirteen, which up to the present time have from various causes proved failures; that around Compton and East of the railway there are sixteen flowing wells out of nineteen attempted; that in the vicinity of Florence there are twelve flowing wells and four with water near the surface. This list, Mr. Hogan states, is not complete but is accurate. All items regarding flowing wells are of much interest to the farmers, and especially those whose inclination turns towards the cultivation of Semitropical fruits. We would be much pleased if some of our Westminster and Coyote creek friends would furnish us with information of a like nature regarding their section.
The number of brick buildings, which are now in the course of erection in Anaheim, and the impossibility of changing their locations after completion except at a great expense naturally brings to the surface the subject of proper boundaries to those valuable tracts of land, whose central situations necessitate the construction of permanent improvements. The subject promises to be one of much future vexation, not alone on account of a negligence which has resulted in the total destruction of all original corners, but chiefly on account of the impossibility of reconciling inaccuracies in an original survey, made over land valued at two or three dollars an acre, and whose prospective value promised never to exceed the sum of one hundred dollars per acre. It can be easily understood that a practical error of a few feet more or less, allowable by custom and usage in land surveys in California, would be a matter of no moment in property of so little value; whereas with the market value of a front foot of the same land reaching in the neighborhood of one thousand dollars the question immediately becomes of most serious import. Some time ago a suggestion was made by the CALIFORNIAN regarding the permanent settlement of this question. This suggestion recommended the adoption of the two thoroughfares, Centre and Los Angeles Streets, as bases upon which to reconstruct a plan of survey, which would more nearly conform to boundaries, as they actually existed, and in this manner the threatening evils of litigation might have been averted without visible or actual injury to the pocket of any one interested. It appears, however, that the majority of opinion inclines in favor of having the corners and boundary lines of the original survey re-located. As the locality of an original corner is only known to one person, the engineer in charge of the survey, it becomes a necessity to employ him as the only means possible whereby the original boundaries can be relocated. All interested are agreed that this work must be done, and we would suggest that it is not only a matter of prudence but economy that the work be done as quickly as possible, for the value of services rendered will no doubt be regulated by the value to those interested of service performed.

The most surprising thing that has happened at Orange for a long time was when Mr. Hartley obtained an inexhaustible supply of good water after digging a well 75 feet deep. At least that is the only item we gather this week. It is singular, but whether the singularity consists in digging such a depth, or in getting water at all we are to free to confess our ignorance. At any rate the fact is really so, and it is a great thing for—Mr. Hartley.
