Resignation.—The following letters which have been handed to us for publication explain themselves:
SANTA ANA, Aug. 21st, 1874.
T. J. Seully, P. Yorba and T. Yorba,
Trustees of the Santa Ana School District; Gentlemen:
I herewith tender my resignation as teacher of the Santa Ana school to take effect at the end of this school month, about the 27th of Sept., if no time is lost. Private business of importance demands my presence in Pennsylvania about the middle of Oct. Permit me to offer you all my sincere thanks for the uniform kindness and courtesy that you have always extended to me; also for the hearty and cordial support which you have given me in the administration of the school during the five years and a half it has been under my charge. With best wishes for the advancement of the school, I remain your most obedient servant,
W. M. McFADDEN.
SANTA ANA, Sept. 3d, 1874.
W. M. McFadden, Esq.
DEAR SIR:—It is with regret that we accept your resignation of our school; and in behalf of the Board of Trustees and patrons of the district, I extend you their thanks for the interest you have taken in the school during the five and a half years that you have been engaged as our Teacher, and for the progress that has been made under your instruction.
T. J. SCULLY,
School District Clerk.
Miraculous Escape.—A few days ago as Mr. John Azbill was descending a peak of the Santa Ana in company with his father-in-law, Mr. Burris, they had occasion to pass close along the top of a cliff, descending almost perpendicularly over fifty feet. Upon arriving at the difficult point of passage Mr. Azbill, who was in advance and laden with a large buck, cautioned Mr. Burris about making a missepet. He had scarcely turned and started on, however, before hearing a noise he looked back and to his horror saw the old gentleman falling, surrounded by a cloud of dust, created by his struggles to regain his footing. As quickly as possible he descended the cliff, expecting to find the mangled remains of his companion, but by good luck the old gentleman had fallen upon a bed of leaves, the only spot where he could have done so without death resulting instantaneously. Ev-
The Bee, published at Delavan, Minn., desires information as to the whereabouts of William McNish, supposed to be somewhere in this State.
A second assessment of $5 per share has been levied upon the capital stock of the Bolsa Chica Wharf Company.
Charlie Wright is in town again. He has been rusticizing, or mining, or doing something of that kind away up in Bear Valley.
Alexander Henry has obtained a fine flow of artesian water at a depth of 320 feet. Being desirous of trying for a still greater flow he proposes to go still deeper.
An adjourned meeting of the Board of Directors of the Bolsa Chica Wharf & Forwarding Company will be held on Monday next at 2 o'clock P.M.
Hunters report deer very numerous in the Santa Ana mountains. Mr. John Azbil returned a few days ago with eight, the result of an afternoon and morning hunt.
A very neat two-story residence on 1st North Street is being constructed under the charge of P. C. McKinnie. Its owner is Mr. Ferdlinand Backs of the firm of Backs Bro's.
The damage suit of Wilson vs. Marquis, on trial on Saturday last before Justice Clark, and in which the jury failed to agree, has been set for a rehearing on the 26th of the pres at month.
The following deeds were filed in the office of the County Recorder during the last week: A. B. Chapman to D. W. C. Dimmock—20 acres at Orange; $500……A. Robinson to Wm. N. Snobly—54 acres in rancho Los Coyotes; $703.
Mr. Chris Higby, of the Planters', returned on Wednesday from a brief visit to the Panamint mines. He is enthusiastic in his description of the untold wealth, now being extracted from the different working shafts of that district, and has for inspection many exceedingly rich specimens.
Certificates of stock, by-laws, receipts, bill-heads, letter-heads, cards, posters and every imaginable kind of printing done at the Southern California office in a workmanlike manner and at low rates. Our type are all new and of the latest design. Call and see specimens.
Cards have been received by friends in Anaheim announcing the marriage at Treviso on July 26th of Herman W. Helman of Los Angeles to Miss Ida Heimann. Miss Heimann is a cousin of the Messrs. Helmann of the well known firm of Helman & George. The happy couple are expected to arrive at Los Angeles about the middle of the present month.
We would call attention to the advertisement of Messieurs Roques & Gagneur, Restauranturs, who have recently leased the premises, formerly occupied by the Challenge Restaurant. M. Gagneur is an experienced French cook and promises his patrons to give to the new establishment a reputation equal to that acquired by the old one under the hands of M. Felix Pouchet.
JUBILANT. The settlers on the lands, embraced within Hoffman's survey of Las Bolsas rancho, and for the possession of which they are engaged in litigation with the Los Angeles and San Bernardino Land Company, were shown the lines of Las Bolsas rancho as defined by the Mexican surveyors who gave juridical possession to the original grantee, or at least such lines as are claimed to have been the original bounds of the grant. The persons who gave them this information are two aged Mexicans, Juan Baptiste Manriquez and Manuel Duarte by name, and both over seventy years old. One of them claims to have been the surveyor who defined the lines and both profess to have been present on that occasion. They have each made an affidavit to the above effect before Judge Clark, wherein the citizens of the "Devil's Elbow" are much rejoiced and jubilate greatly.
A PLEASANT VISIT. Tuesday morning we had the pleasure to receive a most agreeable visit from Mr. Painter senior partner of the firm of J. B. Painter & Co., Type-founders, of San Francisco. There was one feature in Mr. Painter's visit, that was especially noticeable, and that was his departure from the general style of conversation, used by tourists, who consider it the thing when interviewing a native to indulge in nothing but climate, soil and resources, and this is more particularly the case when the native happens to be a country editor. Mr. Painter, who in all probability has experienced the same infliction, carefully avoided heavy subjects, either upon science or business, and in consequence he has left behind him only the remembrance of a most pleasant hour.
SANTA ANA ITEMS. We have received the following items of information from our Santa Ana correspondent: Nothing worthy of much notice seems to have taken place since my last... Threshing still continues in this section of the county. There seems to be an abundant yield, and many on account of want of room are compelled to haul their produce to the landing for proper storage.... R. P. Boswell, for a number of years a resident of Anaheim, died on Monday last at Azusa, at which place he had been living for about two months. His remains were brought to Anaheim on Tuesday, and in accordance with a request made before death, he was on Wednesday interred by the Anaheim Masonic Lodge, of which he was a member.
Last evening the night wind wafted to our listening-car the evidence that the youth and beauty of Anaheim were worshipping at the shrine of Terpsichore, or, in plainer English, that Enterprise Hall was the scene of a social dancing party, gotten up by the young folks of the town, and that they were having a most delightful time.
Westminster will soon lose the distinction, which has been given to it as the artesian water section of the Santa Ana valley. Since the advent of Messrs. Stewart & Co., practical experiments have shown that it is possible to obtain artesian water at any point. The firn, above alluded to, besides having a thorough knowledge of all the details of their business, are supplied with the best and latest improved tools, and can bore to any required depth.
The Californian has been well remembered this week by its country friends. Monday Mr. Goodel of Coyote creek brought up a mammoth watermelon, measuring 72 inches in circumference one way and 51 inches the other. The next day Mr. L. Parker sent a few luscious and large peaches, the fruit of trees only three years from threeseed, which was followed on Friday morning by a present from Mrs. Parter of apples and peaches of unusually large size, and from the same young trees.
SANTA ANA ITEMS.—We have received the following items of information from our Santa Ana correspondent: Nothing worthy of much notice seems to have taken place since my last....Threshing still continues in this section of the county. There seems to be an abundant yield, and many on account of want of room are compelled to haul their produce to the landing for proper storage.....The fruit season is here, but we who live beyond the limits of the bearing belt have much difficulty in procuring enough to satisfy the appetite. Peddlers are seen in town two or three times a week, but the quantity is usually insufficient to supply the public demand ....Corn is ripening rapidly on the highlands, and the farmers are busily engaged in pleking.
FINE WOOL—Mr. John C. Hill has kindly left at the office of the California for a few days a most beautiful sample of wool sheared from a Cotswold ram, belonging to Landrum & Rogers of Watsonville. These gentlemen, who are the largest breeders of the Cashmere or Angora goat in this State, have determined to confine their attention exclusively to the goat business. They intend therefore to dispose of their entire stock of pure Cotswold sheep at an early date. Mr. J. F. Barham of Santiago Caifon made a purchase of bucks from them last year and was much pleased therewith.
LETTERS AND PACKAGES.—The following is a list of packages which were remaining in Wells Fargo & Co.'s Express on Friday, Sept. 4th, 1874: W. R. Olden 3, S. Hamilton 2, F. R. Lafancherie, Clark & Austin, J. W. MoFadden, Henry Sharp. Letters addressed to the following persons were also remaining on that date: W. Kittredge, Miss Ida Struck, P. Granet, D. Davis, Sarah Davis.
RELIGIOUS SERVICES.—Divine services will be held at the Catholic Church on Sunday, September 19th at 10 o'clock A.M....Rev. Mr. Loop of San Gabriel, will conduct an Episcopal service on to-morrow at 11 o'clock A.M. at Enterprise Hall....Rev. Mr. Mosher, of Wilmington, will presen at the Presbyterian Church to-morrow morning at 11 o'clock, and at 7:30 in the evening.
