The impression very generally agrees that the export requirement this year will be much less than last year. At this writing there is some demand for superfine for the outgoing China steamers, the very low rates an inducement to shippers; yet most of the Chinese merchants, who are the leading purchasers, buy extensively as the rates demanded by local millers. DAIRY PRODUCTS—The receipts of fresh Roll Butter are about equal to the daily consumption, selling readily at 22½¾¢; the latter for extra choice; firm at our quotations with a prospect of an advance soon. California kg Butter is selling at 27½¾¢; pickled Rolls, 32½¾¢. Receipts of tab and firkin Butter by rail from Iowa and Illinois have been quite large during the month. Sales have been quite free within the range of 18½¾¢, according to quality and condition. Eastern Cheese are in good supply; Jobbing at 18½¾¢. Eggs—fresh California are scarce and farm at 22½¾¢; 3000 dozen Oregon, just received, sold at 22½¾¢. PRUDIN—Tropical varieties are quite plentiful and are slow of sale. Cherries are scarce; a few arrived on the last stromer Drum Oregon. Gooseberries are out of market. Panches are flooding the market; Early Crawford sell as $810 lb basket; Hale's Early and Barberry, if choice, being $500 lb basket; white common can scarcely be sold though offered to puddles at 22½¾¢ basket. Pies are also hard to sell—very plentiful. Bartlett Pears are coming forward in small quantities. Apples of better quality are taking the place of small inferior trash lately rushed into market, and with difficulty worked off. Plums promise to be a very large corn, and the surplus would pay if dried. The comet will start under their auspices July 20, and return December 14, 1991, which is "at least forty years quicker than any other comet can do it in." Twain mentions as a mark of their public spirit that the fare will be but $2 for every 50,000,000 miles traveled, which is surely a fair price.
