Southern California SATURDAY...AUGUST 8, 1874. Kleinigkeiten. Divine Service will be held at the Catholic Church on August 23d. The suit of Irvine Flint & Co vs Monreal has been set for September 16th at 2 P.M. The next session of the Anaheim Public Schools will commence on Monday next. Mr. J. K. Tuffree returned from San Francisco on Tuesday, much improved in health and full of business. The Strobel Homestead will be sold at public auction on August 22nd. See advertisement of the administrator to that effect. The Anaheim Water Company need more money. See notice of assessment of twenty-five cents per acre, payable to the Treasurer, H. Werder Esq. The District Council of Patrons of Husbandry for Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties will hold a session at this place on Tuesday of next week. Though lost to sight, Crum has not been forgotten, as will be seen by the number of suits, instituted against him in Justice Bailey's Court, and to defend which he is cited to appear. The new crop of grain is coming in thick and fast to the Landing. The agent reports that over twenty thousand sacks have been received up to the present time. Mammoth oranges are not the only fruit which Mr. Hartung's vineyard yieldeth. A very acceptable lot of huge pears found their way into our office the other day from that place. C. R. Short of Orange claims the champion pumpkin of Los Angeles County. It is eight feet four inches in circumference one way, and six feet the other, and weighs one hundred and fifty pounds. The first assessment upon the capital stock of the Bolsa Chica Wharf and Forwarding Company has been ordered by the Board of Directors. It is payable at once to W. R. Olden, Secretary of the Company. A Petition—A petition is being circulated for signatures, representing to the Board of Supervisors that an appropriation has been made by the Legislature to construct a bridge across the Santa Ana River, and asking for the appointment of a committee from their number to select a suitable location. Between now and the season of the year, when a bridge becomes necessary for the purpose of communication, there is barely time to enable the work to be completed. An appropriation of $20,000 has been made to build the bridge. This amount is ample if the Board of Supervisors act under professional advisement and adopt the shortest crossing and an economical design. We see that in the matter of the San Francisco Caion road, proposals have been invited. This road is directly valuable to but few residents of the County, whilst the absence of the Santa Ana bridge would inconvenience a large proportion. We do not hesitate, therefore, that the Board will act promptly upon the suggestions of the petition. DIRECTORS' MEETING. The Board of Directors of the Bolsa Chica Wharf and Forwarding Company held a called meeting on Saturday for the purpose of opening and acting upon proposals for the construction of the wharf. A full Board was present. The following proposals were received: D. G. Sorenson, $30,000; J. U. Crawford, $28,900;—Sallisbury, $28,200. As Mr. Sallisbury's proposal was the lowest, and as he had presented with it the names of good and substantial bondsmen, his bid was accepted. Upon motion Messrs. Fischer, Olden, and Dicken were appointed a committee to draw up and ratify a contract with Mr. Sallisbury for the performance of the work. An assessment of $5.00 per share was ordered, and that notice to that effect should be published in the CALIFORNIAN. The Board then adjourned to its next regular meeting. TERMS OF CONTRACT. The terms of the contract, entered into between the Wharf Company and Mr. Sallisbury are as follows: Mr. Sallisbury agrees to build a wharf 2,000 feet in length and 10 feet wide, according to the specifications, adopted by the Board of Directors of the Company; the Company agrees to pay him therefor $5,000 upon the completion of 500 feet, an addition- AROUND THE COUNTY Oil has been struck in claim in the San Fernando A Water Election will Wilmington to-day. The Local Option合同 and Old Los Nietos is described as partaking excitement, which has no elections elsewhere. Some informality in total result can only be terminated after a canvassed fruit which Mr. Hartung's vineyard yieldeth. It is payable at once to W. R. Olden, Secretary of the Company. —Gen. Banning was the guest of Gabriel Allen Esq., of Newport, on Monday and Tuesday. Our type are all new and of the latest design. Call and see specimens. —Arthur Lewis, a youth as yet to fortune and to fame unknown, determined to go into the pyrotechnic manufacturing business this week. He accordingly went to work, and the fireworks went prematurely off. In a dark room Arthur is deliberating upon the reason why. —Mr. A. Lobe, connected with the house of Wangenheim. He was arrested in Los Angeles by City Marshal Warren on a charge of burglary, convicted of the same, and taken to prison by Sheriff Rowland. —the Los Angeles Express is incorrect in stating that Mr. D. Lewis, of El Monte, is the only farmer in the county who makes a specialty of raising hops. Mr. John B. Raine, living about two miles North-east of this place, has been for several years engaged in hop culture. He has over twenty acres in his hop plantation. —B. F. Smith, of the Richland Meat Market, has had his hands full for the past month in supplying the harvesters of Richland, Santa Ana and Tustin City with meat. From the number of men employed and the number of pounds of beef, required to keep up of the work. An assessment of $5.00 per share was ordered, and that notice to that effect should be published in the CALIFORNIAN. The Board then adjourned to its next regular meeting. TERMS OF CONTRACT.—The terms of the contract, entered into between the Wharf Company and Mr. Salisbury are as follows: Mr. Salisbury agrees to build a wharf 2,000 feet in length and 10 feet wide, according to the specifications, adopted by the Board of Directors of the Company; the Company agrees to pay him therefor $5,000 upon the completion of 500 feet, an additional $3,000 on the completion of 1,000 feet, $4,000 more after 1,800 feet has been constructed, $8,000, additional when the entire wharf is received, and the balance, being $8,200 forty days thereafter. Mr. Salisbury further agrees to construct each section of the wharf at his individual risk until finally completed, and to complete the same on or before the first day of next December. EXCURSION TO CATALINA.—How charming a thing it is, especially during the sultry summer, to lay aside the cares of business and hit away to some bright little isle in a blue summer ocean! This is just what a party of ladies and gentlemen of Anaheim contemplate doing about the latter part of the present month. A vessel has already been chartered to convey the party to Catalina Island; but as its carrying capacity is large, we have been requested to announce that any one desirous of partaking in the trip may leave word at this office. It is proposed to remain on the Island about four days, or longer should the members so decide. The cost of the trip will be very small compared with the enjoyment anticipated. INJUNCTION DENIED.—It will be remembered that a man named Ephraim Gay, has endeavored for a couple of weeks past to delay and retard in every manner possible the construction of the Bolsa Chica Wharf. Failing to obtain any responsible bondsmen to back him in his offer to build the company's wharf, he instituted suit against the company and asked the District Court to enjoin them from awarding the contract to any one except himself. The question was argued pro and con before Judge Seulveda on Thursday, who after a careful hearing refused to grant the injunction and dismissed the suit. BOARD OF SUPERVISORS. — The Board of Supervisors met on Monday. Present — Supervisors Hinds, Evey and Griffith. The petition of John Fischer and others for a road through Brea Cañon was laid upon the table until the September meeting. The petition of R. Egan and others for road at San Juan Capistrano was referred to the Road Commissioner. Bids for building road in San Francisco quao caution were ordered to be opened on the 17th day of August. The Board adjourned until August 17th. CHEESE DAIRY. — Mr. John H. Meyers of Los Coyotes is engaged in completing negotiations with the Los The Los Angeles Express is incorrect in stating that Mr. D. Smith, of the Richland Meat Market, has had his hands full for the past month in supplying the harvesters of Richland, Santa Ana and Tustin City with meat. From the number of men employed and the number of pounds of beef, required to keep up their lick, he estimates the grain crop of that section, unusually large. Mr. Delos Morton, who has lately arrived from the oil regions of Pennsylvania, has bought sixty acres of land adjoining that of Mr. L. Parker, which he will at once commence improving. A contract has already been awarded to P. C. McKinnle for the erection of a handsome dwelling house. We acknowledge the receipt from M. Gray, 623 and 025 Clay Street, San Francisco, of the following pieces of music: "Ninette," "Polly," and "How He Loves Me Best." This is the only house on the Pacific Coast that publishes and engraves its own music, and is par excellence the music store of California. Mrs. L. Parker has brought us a specimen of a grafted Siberian crab apple, measuring five inches in circumference. The root was only planted one year ago last March, and we consider it a wonderful growth even for this wonderful country. A prominent nursery man, of Illinois, who has been visiting the lady mentioned, states that under the most favorable circumstances, it would require three years to acquire a similar growth in his State. Green Mountain 3d, the thorough bred ram recently purchased by J. E. Bacon of Capistrano, was bred by Jno. H. Sprague of Waltham, Addison Co., Vermont, and was sired by Green Mountain 2nd, popularly known as the Sprague Ram, he by Hammond's original Green Mountain, by Gold Drop, by California Lamb or "Old Alas" by Sweep-stakes. His pedigree is fully stated on page 121 of Randall's "Practical Shepherd". We were shown a sample of his fleece, not fully grown, but sheared on account of chating, caused by travel. It is of superior quality and weighed 29l pounds. CHEESE DAIRY. — Mr. John H. Meyers of Los Coyotes is engaged in completing negotiations with the Los Angeles and San Bernardino Land Company for the purchase of "Los Coyotes" house and the wet tule lands around it, with the intention of establishing at that point a cheese dairy upon quite an extensive scale. Mr. Meyer represents an association, furnished with ample capital to make the project a most valuable addition to our industrial resources. SURPRISE PARTY.—On Thursday evening last the friends of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Richards united in paying them a social visit. Although the worthy couple were not expecting so many at one time, they proved themselves equal to the occasion. Music was produced and an adjournment made to Enterprise Hall, where the hours were merrily and pleasantly passed in "tripping the light fantastic." ACCIDENT.—Mr. Fitzgerald, a friend of Mr. E. F. Cahill, and at present visiting that gentleman; met with a serious accident on Thursday. He was riding a bronco, which threw him violently to the ground. Local Market Reports.
