Domestic Produce.
We this day present our readers with the statistics of the harvest year 1872-4. Our tables of receipts and exports of Flour, Grain, Wool, etc., will be found exhaustive, and to which the attention of the reader is invited. The total malt value of the Wheat and Flour exported in twelve months was $19,603,725, against $19,109,711 the year previous. In making this statement, it should be remarked that a year ago we had considerable old stock of Wheat carried into the new year, while at the beginning of the present harvest year stocks of old Grain and Flour were well high exhanced, leaving empty granaries on July 1st, 1874. Our total demand exports by one for the harvest year of 1872-8 surpassed $14,199,648, against same period in your previous $24,000,000. The difference, though small, is more than made up by the very great increase of shipments everland, the value of which is not at our disposal.

FARM AND GARDEN.
FIG CULTURE—Dr. Strensel of Alameda County, who has devoted much time and consideration to the cultivation of the fig, furnishes the following article on the subject for the California Horticulturist:
The tree of the Garden of Eden, producing one of the most luxious fruits, should be more largely cultivated in California. No fruit tree is easier propagated, longer lived, or more thrifty under ordinary care; none a more prolific or abundant bearer. The fruit, wholesome and nutritious, is easily preserved for future use by drying, and is thus adapted for a staple article of food in our favored clime.
The fig tree thrives best in a rich, mellow soil, and requires a copious supply of water during mid-summer, on any of our uplands or dry soils, to produce large and well-ripened fruit. It is propagated from cuttings of the previous year's growth, or by sprouts from stool-plants or around the butt of a tree. These last are partially rooted already, and will make a fine growth during the first season, and begin to bear the following year. This very facility of propagation appears to be a barrier to the further improvement of the fig by the production of new and choice varieties from seed, which calls for the best efforts of our nurserymen in that line. Considering the great difference in the quality of the fruit and in the growth of the trees of the same variety, when raised under favorable conditions, it is presumed that the seedlings would also vary, probably with great improvement both in size and flavor of the fruit.
The fruit on the fig tree forms in the axilline of the leaves. The so-called first crop is on the previous year's growth; the second crop is developed with new wood during the season, and is checked only by lack of moisture in the soil, or by the autumnal frosts. This peculiarity of growth induces long and straggling branches, disturbing the symmetrical beauty of a tree, and by which its vitality and power to produce fruit are also impaired; but with a lil-

APPLETON'S AMERICAN CYCLOPEDIA.
NEW REVISED EDITION.
Endlessly rewritten by the ablest writers on every subject. Prided from new type, and illustrated with several thousand drawings and maps.
The work originally published under the title of Two New American Cyclopodia was completed in 1875, since which time the wine circulation which it has attracted in all parts of the United States, and the digital information and refinement of social life. Great wars and consequent revolutions have occurred, involving national changes of peculiar moment. The civil war of our own country, which was at its height when the last to home the old work appeared, has happily been made up, and a new commercial and industrial activity has been commenced.
Large accents to our geographical knowledge have been made by the indisputable explorer of Africa.
The great political revolution of the last decade, with the natural re-alt of the lapse of time, have brought into public view a multitude of new men, whose names is curious to know the artificians. Great battles have been fought and important stages maintained, of which the data is as yet preserved only in the newspapers or in the transient publications of the day, but which ought now to take their place in permanent and methodical history.
In propering the present edition for the press, it has assumed the information to the latest possible dates, and to furnish an accurate account of the most recent discoveries in science, of every fresh production in literature, and of the newest inventions in the practical arts, as well as to give a succinct and original record of the program of political and historical events.
The work has been begun after long and careful preparation with the assistance of remuneration for carrying it on to a successful termination.
None of the original starotype plates have been used, but every page has been printed on new type, forming in fact a new Cyclopodia, with the same plan and company as its predecessor, but with far greater preliminary expenditure, and with such improvements in its composition as have been suggested by longer experiments. The illustrations which are introduced for the first time in the present edition have been added, not for the sake of pictorial effect, but to give greater lucidity and force to the explanations in the text. They embrace all branches of science and of natural history, and depict the most famous and remarkable features of architecture, architecture, and art, as well as the various processes intended for instruction rather than embellishment, no paints have been spared to enhance their artistry.
