Last week we hazarded remarks on ginseng, coupled the suggestion that an amount worth three times that amuse the best quality in the main consumption. We can conceive no reason why the district boring our coast range Sierra Nevada should not genial for the growth of the ble plant as those which the Allegheny Mountains is indigenous, or the high Tartary, between latitudes 41° north, where it is four wild state, and eagerly so at the expense of much Ginseng root at one dollar seems to us a far more product, where it can be compared than potatoes at two decentral. The experiment worth trying; it is not coined, if successful, would most important addition value of our domestic Exports of ginseng to China the East, via San Francisco 1873 amounted to 219,088.
The Committee on County Boundaries recorder the indefinite postponement bill to create Orange county signing as reasons that the delegation from Los county in the Senate and were opposed to the bill, and the least of it, the shape in came before the Senate questionable. It was adv parties who were not rejoining the county, and all this mitted in evidence before committee. The bill was in postponed. —Succ. Record.
Proposed New County of Orange.
Though the matter of county is "done for," we make for the following article from the Papa Daily Register of March 18th. The editor of that paper is James A. Gardner, formerly province of the Southern California and we are certain that his name in "Orange" will appreciate readily effort in their behalf. We friend Gardner all sorts of charity; and hope that in our effort at division we shall have ample assistance.
We notice that the residents of Southern portion of Los Angeles county are petitioning the Legislature to set them off from the old land and give them a separateization of their own, under the laws of Orange. The cause of the owners is an eminently just one. County of Los Angeles, as at present existing, is about 90 by 130 acres in extent, and is divided by town, interest and sentiment into separate business centres—
The Gum Tree.
In view of the immense number of gum trees being planted in the vicinity of Anaheim, we are careful to collate every item concerning their culture. The following by Dr. William Gibson, of Alameda, sounds like pretty sensible advice, and we recommend it to persons planting these trees:
"Don't trim them. The eucalyptus, in its natural localities, attains a height of from thirty to forty feet, with a diameter of forty inches. The first two years of its growth from the seed are largely employed in making root. Cut off its side branches, and you cut off the organ which supply the root with food. Dwarf the root, and you produce an ill-shaped, ungraceful tree, which having no firm hold in the ground, is liable to be blown over by every high wind. Our gardeners ball up the roots of the eucalyptus like a mass of worms, and sell them in this condition; the purchasers dig a hole and cover them up. They grow awhile, blow over, are trimmed, rosette and replanted, to look as much like a eucalyptus as a jackass does like
Notice that the residents of southern portion of Los Angeles county are petitioning the Legislature to set them off from the old city and give them a separate location of their own, under the Orange County of Orange. The cause of the owners is an eminently just one county of Los Angeles, as at present existing, is about 90 by 130 acres in extent, and is divided by ten, interest and sentiment into two separate business centres—Angeles and Anaheim. These cities have the business of their native portions of the county by distinct one from the other, which has its separate seaport, even their business with the world is not done through some channel; Anaheim and Constituency shipping through Kim Landing; Los Angeles and Northern portion going through part of San Pedro. These are all divisions, the two sections divided by a river, and will always so. The city of Los Angeles with its bulk of population lies under the present state of an absolute control over the remote southern portion of county, in which it has no intercept to collect taxes, and takes care to keep the public offices with her own men, and spend dollar of the public money in improvement of its own parcel of the county. The port will be segregated is about 50 long by 25 in width. It employs the large and flourishing element of Anaheim. Westminster Santa Ana, Richland, Tustin Capistrano and others, and is constantly able and ought to be used to govern itself and spend taxes within its own borders; heartily sympathise with the owners in their cause, and hope prayers will be granted. Los Angeles would still have a county 90x90 miles in extent, with an abundance of population and wealth to import its own government. It no interest in the seeding except to absorb its revenue, ought to be made to let go its land and give the new community a place to start out for itself."
At week we hazarded a few skins on ginseng, coupled with suggestion that an effort be made to cultivate it in this State, now give the amount exported high San Francisco to China during the year 1873. It was valued at one dollar per pound, but is three times that amount for best quality in the markets of Pompton. We can conceive of branches, and you cut off the organa which supply the root with food. Dwarf the root, and you produce an ill-shaped, ungraceful tree, which having no firm hold in the ground, is liable to be blown over by every high wind. Our gardeners ball up the roots of the eucalyptus like a mass of worries, and sell them in this condition; the purchasers dig a hole and cover them up. They grow awhile, blow over, are trimmed, reset, and replanted, to look as much like a eucalyptus as a jackass does like a philosopher. The hole for a eucalyptus should be always from eighteen inches to two feet square, and of like depth; it should be filled to within eight inches of the top with good vegetable mold or compost; the roots should be spread out so as to have no twisted accumulation; and the tree, when planted, should be about an inch below the earth line. So planted, it will rarely blow over.
Tobacco and Ramie.
Tobacco culture is becoming one of the industries of the southern part of the State. The Culp factory at Gilroy is an established success, and recent experiments bear out the assertion that the land and climate of that portion of California are especially suited to the cultivation of tobacco. The latest case brought to our notice, is that of a gentleman who, after learning the Culp process by working a year in the establishment, leased thirty acres of land and set it out in tobacco. With his own labor and that of two Chinese men, and paying ten per cent. royalty to Mr. Culp he cleared $10,000 on the crop, or over $300 per acre. This was at Gilroy, where the land was not considered by experts as equal to the moist bottom and mesa lands of Los Angeles. Facts like these should have weight with men of capital seeking investment. We learn that the small experiments made at Los Angeles in ramie are shortly to be followed up by very extensive planting. Ramie is indigenous to most localities, and the experiments have shown that the bottom lands of Los Angeles are admirably suited to its growth.
Transplanting Trees. — If we were asked the question what causes the greatest number of failures in removing trees, we should unhesitatingly answer, allowing the roots to become dry while out of the ground. Especially is this the case with the conifer or cone-bearing family, and in fact, all trees with persistent or evergreen leaves. Despite the oft-
At week we hazarded a few rocks on ginseng, coupled with suggestion that an effort be made to cultivate it in this State. Now give the amount exported through San Francisco to China during the year 1873. It was valued at one dollar per pound, but is worth three times that amount for most quality in the markets of Pompton. We can conceive of reason why the districts neighing our coast range and the Nevada should not prove as useful for the growth of this valuation as those which border on Allegheny Mountains, where it is dangerous, or the high lands of Maryland, between latitudes 30° and north, where it is found in a estate, and eagerly sought for the expense of much privation. Long root at one dollar a pound is to us a far more desirable product, where it can be cultivated, and potatoes at two dollars per gallon. The experiment is really trying; it is not cost much, if successful, would make a very important addition to the stock of our domestic products. Parts of ginseng to China from East, via San Francisco, for an amounted to 219,088 pounds.
The Committee on Counties and County Boundaries recommended that definite postponement of the plan create Orange county, asking as reasons that the entire location from Los Angeles city in the Senate and Assembly opposed to the bill, and to say least of it, the shape in which it may before the Senate was rather reasonable. It was advocated by states who were not residents of county, and all this was subordinated in evidence before the committee. The bill was indefinitely approved.—Sac, Record.
Transplanting Trees. — If we were asked the question what causes the greatest number of failures in removing trees, we should unhesitatingly answer, allowing the roots to become dry while out of the ground. Especially is this the case with the coniferous or cone-bearing family, and in fact, all trees with persistent or evergreen leaves. Despite the oft-repeated cautions of our leading horticultural writers—amounting in many instances to earnest pleading—the careless practice hinted at is still adhered to by a large proportion of our planters, including many whom we fear really know better. Scarcely a day passes during the spring and autumn months that we do not notice trees and plants laying out waiting until the workmen are ready to set them, although exposed to the combined influences of wind and sun, which invariably causes rapid evaporation to take place. In the majority of instances the nurseries are obliged to bear the burden of the failures—"for was not the planter careful in setting his specimens? hence previous disease must have been the cause." Friends, never let the roots of your trees dry for one moment when out of the ground. You might just as well keep your favorite Cotswold and Durham from the water trough and expect them to thrive. Tramping the soil firmly preserves the roots moist after the planting, and a slight mulch over the surface completes the work in a satisfactory manner.
It is estimated that 1500 sheep folded on an acre of land for twenty four hours, or one hundred for fifteen days; would manure the soil sufficiently to carry it through a four years rotation.
