A foreign journal refers to the story of a great speculator who floated a company for working a salt mine of inexhaustible extent, which turned out to be the sea.
The Inter-Ocean, speaking of the Courier-Journal says: "We never see one of its jokes that we are not reminded of George D. Prentice—reminded that he is dead."
When Brown, the mind-reader, told a Boston girl to place her mind on some particular thing, she looked around for an extension-table as the only thing large enough to hold it.
The Winnemucca Silver State says from four to six cars, all filled with emigrants form the East, pass that place daily, and not a single soul ever stops there, except to purchase a glass of "tangle-leg."
They say that "Long John" Wentworth of Chicago, is to be married, and Pullman is knocking out the partition between two sections of a sleeping car, in preparation for the bridal trip.
The London Advertiser says that the subject of christening ships with bottles of wine is about to be taken up by the temperance people, who assert that the rolling of vessels at sea is mainly caused thereby.

ANAHEIM HOTEL,
Cor. Centre and Lemon Sts.
Anaheim, Cal.
THE undersigned would respectfully call the attention of the traveling public to the superior accommodations afforded at the ANAHEIM HOTEL.
I will endeavor to maintain its well known reputation as the only FIRST-CLASS HOTEL South of San Francisco.
NICE SUNNY ROOMS and especial care given to the comfort of invalids
All Stages arrive at and depart from this House.
Alexander H. Stephens thinks the Democratic party are around "plugging" their melons before they are ripe, and that in 1876 when they gather the fruit they will find it all rotten.
When a Chicago woman answered the door-bell and was informed that her husband had been drowned, she sank down and whispered: "And the bill for $80 worth of false hair is to come up at four o'clock—ooh-hoo-ooh!"
An Iowa man has applied for a divorce on the ground that his wife is an invalid. They began life in a vine-embossomed cottage. It was at the wash-tub that she caught a severe cold. He drives a charcoal wagon and expects to be happy in heaven.
Senator Morton, of course does not like the President's hard-money views. He goes so far as to say that the repeal of the Legal Tender Act would be a national calamity, in his opinion, and he is greatly surprised that the President should have recommended it.
The Buena Vista Vinicultural Society of Sonoma have made about 200,000 gallons of wine this season, and the quality is more promising at this season of the year than at any previous vintage. They have now 400,000 gallons of wine in cask and 100,000 bottles of champagne on hand.
A friend, who had a promising felon of 36 hours growth on his hand, informs us that at the suggestion of a neighbor, he applied as a remedy salt saturated with turpentine, which, in the language of the person prescribing "knocked the felon higher than a kite." This is a remedy worth knowing.—Napa Register.
Professor Purser believes that the moon, in revolving around the earth, and drawing the tides behind her, causes the latter to act as a brake on the revolution of the globe, and he considers that it may be mathematically shown that this action is slowly but surely checking the earth's speed of rotation, so that the days and nights are gradually lengthening. In a thousand million years or so they may become each a month long.
An erring husband, who had exhausted all explanations for late hours, and had no apology ready, recently slipped into the house about 1 o'clock very softly, denuded himself gently, and began rocking the cradle by the bedside, as if he had been awakened out of a sound sleep by infantile cries. He had rocked away for five minutes, when Mary Jane, who had silently observed the whole maneuver, said, "Come to bed, you fool; you! the baby ain't there."
A teacher, wishing to improve the occasion, said to the boys at the conclusion of a strawberry festival, "Have you enjoyed these berries to-day?" "Yes, sir," "yes, sir," came up from all sides, with unmistakable heartiness. "Well, children, if you had seen these berries growing in my garden," and had slipped in through the gate without my leave and picked them from the vines would they have tasted as good
He had rocked away for five minutes,
when Mary Jane, who had silently observed the whole maneuver, said,
"Come to bed, you fool, you! the baby ain't there."
A teacher, wishing to improve the occasion, said to the boys at the conclusion of a strawberry festival, "Have you enjoyed these berries to-day?" "Yes, sir," "yes, sir," came up from all sides, with unmistakable heartiness. "Well, children, if you had seen these berries growing in my garden, and had slipped in through the gate without my leave and picked them from the vines would they have tasted as good as now?" "No, sir," was the prompt reply. "Why not?" "Because," said a wide-awake boy, "then we shouldn't have had sugar and cream with 'em."
A strange incident is reported from Lyons. On the 17th of October two young people were married. Within two hours of the time at which the ceremony took place they became insensible, and have remained so ever since. The Lyonese doctors have exhausted their science in this case; and the luckless pair, though yet alive, are evidently sinking from mere starvation. There can be no question but that some narcotic of the most violent class has been given them—probably as a joke. A young man, apprenticed to a chemist, has been arrested on suspicion, but it is believed that several of the marriage guests bore a part in the affair, which was meant as a joke only.
Nothing more clearly indicates the increased interest in "Mormonism" among the thoughtful portion of the transient and resident community of this Territory than the continued and constantly increasing demand for the Book of Mormon, translated by the Prophet Joseph Smith from the plates revealed to him by the angel. To meet this demand we have just published a new, neat and cheap edition of this, the most remarkable literary production of modern times, which is now for sale at this office. It is bound in English Imi., a strong and useful style of binding, with embossed sides and back, and is sold at one dollar and fifty cents per copy. We shall have further advice to keep the Book of Mormon constantly in stock, so that all orders, whether by mail or otherwise, can be promptly filled—Salt Lake News.

MEDICAL
VINEGAR BITTERS
Grateful Thousands proclaim VINEGAR BITTERS the most wonderful Invigurant that ever sustained the simiting system.
No Person can take these Bitteries according to directions; and remain long unwell; provided their bones are not destroyed by mineral poison or other means; and vital organs wasted beyond repair.
Billions, Remittent and Intermittent Perenns which are so prevalent in the valleys of our great rivers throughout the United States, especially those of the Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri Illinois, Tennessee, Cumberland Arkansas, Red Colorado,Brazos Rio Grande Pearl Alabama Mobile Savannah Roanoke James and many others with their vast tributaries throughout our entire-country dipping the Sunnoy and Autumn; and remarkably so during seasons of unusual heat and dryness; are invariably accompanied by extensive derangements of the stomach and liver; and other abdominal visceres. In their treatment,a purgative exerting a powerful influence upon these various organs; is essentially necessary. There is no cathartic for the purpose equal to Dr. J. WARDING's VINEGAR BITTERS; as they will specially remove the dark-colored vascular matter with which the bowels are located; at the same time stimulating the secretions of the liver; and generally restoring the healthy functions of the digestive organs.
Fortify the body against disease by purifying all its fluids with VINEGAR BITTERS.' No epiphanie can take hold of a system thus fore-armed.
Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Heallache in The Shoulders,Coughs.
ST-1860-X YEAR OLD Homestead Tonic
Plantation Bitters
In a purely vegetable preparation composed of various influences upon these various organs, is essentially necessary. There is no cathartic for the purpose equal to Dr. J. Walkin's Vinegar Bitters, as they will specially remove the dark-colored vascular matter with which the bowels are loaded, at the same time stimulating the secretions of the liver, and generally restoring the healthy functions of the digestive organs.
Fortify the body against disease by purifying all its fluids with VINEGAR Bitters. No epidemic can take hold of a system thus fore-armed.
Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Headache, Pain in the Shoulders, Conghes, Tightness of the Chest, Dizziness, Sour Eructations of the Stomach, Bad Taste in the Mouth, Bilious Attacks, Palpitation of the Heart, Inflammation of the Lungs, Pain in the region of the Kidneys, and a hundred other painful symptoms, are the offspring of Dyspepsia. One bottle will prove a better guarantee of it merits than a lengthy advertisement.
Scrofula, or Kiner's Eryll, White Swellings, Ulcers, Eryptioms, Swolled Neck, Goitre, Scarification, Inflammation, Indent Infirmations, Memorial Ailctions, Old Sickness, Eruptions of the Skin, Sore Eyes, etc. In those cases in all other constitutional Diseases, WALKIN'S VINEGAR Bitters have shown their great curative powers in the most obstinate and intractable cases.
For Inflammatory and Chronic Rheumatism, Gout, Billions Remitted and Intermittent Feveres, Diseases of the Blood, Liver, Kidneys and Bladder, these Bitters have no equal. Such Diseases are caused by Vitiated Blood.
Mechanical Diseases. Persons engaged in Pans and Minerals, such as Plumbers, Types-setters, Gold heaters, and Miners, as they advance in life, are subject to paralysis of the Bowel. To general against this take a dose of WALKIN'S VINEGAR Bitters occasionally.
For Skin Diseases, Eruptions, Tetter, Salt Rheum, Biotoxin Spots, Pimples, Pustules, Bolt's Cobenbars, King worms, Scald-head, Sore Eyes, Eryptiads, Ich Seuris, Discollections of the Skin, Humors and Diseases of the Skin of whatever name or nature, are literally drug up and carried out of the system in a short time by the use of these Bitters.
Pin, Tape, and other Worms, burking in the system of so many thousands; are effectually destroyed and removed. No system of medicine; no vermifuges; no antihistamines will free the system from worms like these Bitters.
For Female Complaints, in young or old, married or single, at the dawn of womanhood, or the turn of life, these Tonic Bitters display so decided an influence that improvement is soon perceptible.
Cleanse the Vittated Blood whenever you find its impurities bursting through the skin in Pimples, Eruptions, or Sores; cleanse it when you find it obstructed and plugged in the veins; cleanse it when it is foul; your colings will tell you when. Keep the blood pure; and the health of the system will follow.
