Anaheim Gazette SATURDAY NOVEMBER 28, 1874 Kleinigkeiten. Highly & Cullum have lost a horse, for the recovery of which they offer a reward of twenty-five dollars. The case of Devoe vs Barham was dismissed from the calendar on Monday last in accordance with a previous order of the District Court. Fifty Anaheimers have been admitted to be in Los Angeles on Tuesday next as trial jurors in the murder case of the State vs McDonald. There will be a tin wedding Santa Ana-wards on Monday night. And lots of folks from Anaheim are going over to see how it's done. A private letter from Orange tells us that Geo. L. Pierce, one of the most estimable citizens of that burgh, is confined to his bed with a serious attack of fever. Do not forget that the regular meeting of Fairview Grange will be held this afternoon at the usual hour and that business of much importance will be presented. Mr. Callisher, of the firm of Calisher & Co., left for San Francisco on the Orizaba. He will return in a few days with a large and complete stock of winter goods. Among the arrivals during the week were Mr. Ben Dreyfus from San Francisco, Henry Clark Esq. from Panamint, and two newly married couples returning from their bridal tour. We know of nearly a dozen cottages, now in course of erection in Anaheim, and still it is almost an impossibility to rent a house. Houses here are rented first and built after Mysterious. Just about daylight on Thursday morning, or a little before that time, a shot was fired somewhere in the vicinity of Centre Street; and that shot passed through the Eastern wall of the residence of P. C. McKinnie and about eighteen inches above the sleeping occupant of a room in the second story front. The bullet was found in the further side of the room, and evidently was fired from a patent cartridge pistol. The mystery of the matter is the line of direction taken by the ball in passing through the wall of the house. The wall is twelve or fourteen inches thick and the point of entrance in the second story is about twenty feet from the ground. The bullet passed through in a direction parallel with the plane of the earth and directly at right angles to the wall of the building. If it had been fired from any point near by, its line of passage would naturally have formed an acute angle with the wall, passing upwards; the shot must therefore have been fired from a distance and in the air, and, in its downward passage encountering an obstacle, changed its course in the manner described above. This theory is the most reasonable, besides being the more satisfactory; because it shows that there was no evil intent upon the part of the unknown "shootist," and again it is a forcible illustration of the evils attendant upon early rising. If the individual, who fired the shot, had remained in bed to a seasonable hour, the hole in the wall would not have been made; or if the occupant of the room had been an early riser, he possibly might have been killed. THANKSGIVING DAY. The early rains, the farning successes of the past year, the near approach of railroad communication with Los Angeles and San Francisco, and the general Letter From Ed. Gazette. The Senator left San Francisco for Anaheim Landing yesterday. It is advertised to start on its return trip on Tuesday next. The Wm. Taber will leave Wilmington for San Francisco to-day. The annual meeting of the stockholders of the Anaheim Lighter Company will be held on the first Monday in next month. A Board of Trustees will be elected, and the annual reports of officers and agent will be presented for inspection and action. Letters addressed to the following persons, are detained for want of postage stamps: Thos. A. Garey, L. F. Baker, and George Lord. And one, addressed to Francisco Sepulveda, of Wilmington, is detained because the stamp upon it has already been used and erased. The social of the Anaheim Band on Thursday evening was as usual a most pleasant affair, although we regret to say that there was not so large an attendance as would naturally be expected. This was doubtless occasioned by the gloomy and threatening appearance of the weather. Divine services will be conducted at the Presbyterian Church to-morrow at 11 o'clock A.M. and 7:30 P.M. by the pastor, J. M. Allis....There will be an Episcopal service at Enterprise Hall at 11 o'clock A.M....Mass will be held at the Catholic Church on December 18th at the usual hour. Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Russ, of San Francisco, were in town on Thursday and left again for Los Angeles on Friday morning. We understand that it is their intention to winter with their family in Los Angeles, and that they have secured apartments for that purpose at the Pico House. The ejectment suit of Irvine vs Monreal has been set for trial at 9 o'clock on next Thursday morning. The case had been placed on last week's docket; but the defendant having died days with a large and complete stock of winter goods. Thanksgiving Day.-The early rains, the farrowing successes of the past year, the near approach of railroad communication with Los Angeles and San Francisco, and the general indications of future prosperity in the Santa Ana valley have predisposed everyone to be literally and truly thankful. And Thanksgiving Day of the present year of our Lord was therefore kept in the good old New England style. Church in the morning, turkeys and cranberry-sauce at dinner, and the general relaxation from the cares of business, indulged in by the entire community, proved quite a change, and a pleasant one at that, from the evil days of the previous years of the present decade, when all, who thought fit to observe the day, did so with the lips and not with the heart. And whilst we are on the subject, it will not be amiss to say that it is with pleasure we notice the increased observance of that command of the Giver of All Good, which bids us to set aside one day of the seven for rest and the improvement of our spiritual welfare. Even considered merely from motives of policy, there is no measure more conducive to the promotion of the growth of new localities than a reverent observance of the Sabbath. Just So.-Julius Levy publishes a card in the Tulare Times saying that Morse, in company with Miss Fannie Marston, left Visalia without paying for the use of the hall.-Exchange. And we might add, regretfully, that Morse, in company with Miss Fannie Marston, left here without paying a good sized printing bill incurred at this office. The same is for sale, cheap.-Napa Register. And we add our personal regrets and our little bill to the above testimonials to the excellence of the Marston troupe. Taxes.-Sheriff Rowland will remain in Anaheim until this evening to collect taxes for the fiscal year 1874-75, now due. He can be found at the Planters' Hotel. Letter List. ANAHEIM POST-OFFICE. R. W. The case had been placed on last week's docket; but the defendant having died since the commencement of the suit, and it appearing to the District Court that the only parties at interest in the continued defense of the suit were defendant's attorneys, by consent of counsel on both sides, said attorneys were substituted in lieu of defendant, and the case was continued as above. —Chas. E. French, agent for the San Joaquin ranchos, offers for rental that portion of the San Joaquin, lying between Tustin City and the "Adobe Station." Much of this land is sufficiently moist to produce 'bountifully without irrigation,' as has been shown by previous years of cultivation. And besides active work will soon be commenced on a ditch, leading the waters of the Santiago creek to this locality, and which, it is expected, will be completed before the commencement of next Spring. —Rev. Gustav Borchard, the German Lutheran Pastor for Los Angeles and Anaheim, will preach to the Germans of this place to-morrow at 3 o'clock P.M. in the Presbyterian Church. All are invited, Protestants and Catholics. The subject of his sermon will be, "The night of sin in human heart, and the light of Christ." There will also be organized a German Sunday School and the parents are requested to send their children at 10 o'clock A.M. to the same church. It is the intention of Mr. Borchard to preach in Anaheim every alternate Sabbath. Letter From Orange. Ed. Gazette—No note of the news items or progress of Orange, it seems, has appeared in your columns for several weeks, and yet at no time has the place grown more rapidly or more interesting features marked its development. But I suspect the Orange people themselves are rather to blame for this neglect, each thinking his neighbor favored with more time than himself to attend to the matter. However in the future it is to be hoped that some one will see that our current events are properly noticed...A few weeks ago quite a stir was made by the prospect of the probable immediate extension of the railroad to this side of the Santa Ana river. The right of way was obtained, and route surveyed; but a delay in obtaining bridge material and the nearness of winter will probably defer the extension until another Summer. The road, I believe, has no subsidy beyond Anaheim, but the Company recognize the importance of this location—its rich, fertile soil. Its immense crops of grain and other produce requiring shipment, its rapid growth in permanent and thrifty settlers, and its importance as a semi-tropical fruit producing region. With regard to this latter consideration it is said by those whose experience and travels in California enable them to judge, that no where in the State can be found another place so favorable for the production of semi-tropical fruits. Not only is the soil most favorable, but the location is farthest South and so peculiarly situated as to unite those climatic influences most favorable to the perfection of these fruits. The mild delightful winters, where even the trace of frost is not often found, the equable summers, where excessive heat is ever mitigated by the constant welcome sea-breeze, afford a climate MISCELLANEOUS FASHION Livery, Feed, and Sale Stable, Centre Street, opposite Poplar Row.
