FARMERS' AND MERCHANTS' BANK OF LOS ANGELES. THE CAPTURE OF NEMA SANIB. The reported capture of Nena Sahib recalls one of the bloodiest episodes in history, the crowning horror of the Sepoy mutiny in India, and the justification of whatever of severity the English employed in suppressing the insurrection. Nena Sahib was the Chief of Bithoor, and leader of the mutineers who on the 7th of June, 1857, turned their guns against their officers and the English residents at Cawnpore. After the British troops under General Wheeler had held their intrenched camp for a week against the overwhelming force of the enemy, Nena Sahib offered them free passage to Allahabad if they would give up the treasure. To this proposition General Wheeler agreed, but no sooner were his men embarked on the river than a murderous fire was opened upon their boats, and those who were not killed were seized and re-conducted to Cawnpore, where the women were separated from the men and locked up in what had formerly been the Assembly-room. On the 15th June the Nena learned that Sir Henry Havelock was advancing with irresistible impetus, storming every obstacle in his path; and infuriated at the news the blightthirty minutes after it happened. CALLAGHAN's er were his men embarked on the river than a murderous fire was opened upon their boats, and those who were not killed were seized and re-conducted to Cawnpore, where the women were separated from the men and locked up in what had formerly been the Assembly-room. On the 15th June the Nena learned that Sir Henry Havelock was advancing with irresistible impetus, storming every obstacle in his path; and infuriated at the news the bloodthirsty wretch issued, through the Begum, an order to slay the entire company. In accordance with this order the Begum approached the building in which the Europeans were confined, accompanied by five men, each armed with a sabre. Two of these were Hindoo peasants, two were Mohammedan butchers and one was a member of the Maharajah's body-guard. They entered the building quietly and closed the doors behind them. Then ensued a scene of atrocious butchery which can only be imagined, for no one was left alive to tell the tale. It was like the last scene of the Nibelungen Lied, only there was here no resistance. Shrieks and scufflings were heard at intervals. Twice the Rajah's body-guard came to the door and exchanged his hacked and dripping sabre for a fresh weapon. So all that ghastly afternoon the sounds of slaughter rose at intervals from the interior of the building, and when at dusk the doors opened to permit the egress of the five panting and exhausted executioners, they left behind them a silence only broken by the feeble moanings of a few yet lingering wretches. They, at least, were permitted to survive till the morning, and as they lay there bleeding among the mutilated bodies of their relatives and friends, the gay music from Neva Saib's banquet hall was wafted in to them;for the Chief of Bithoor gave a ball and a supper that night, and the revel was prolonged and joyous. Next morning the doors of the slaughter house were opened, and the mangled remains of the victims were dragged out and cast into a dry well within the compound. The three who had survived entreated that an end might be put to their sufferings, and thus much mercy was accorded them.Their bodies were hurled into the pit,and the hellish deed was nitly completed by the slaughter of two beautiful,fair-haired children, who had inexplicably escaped up to that time, and were gazing benumbled with horror upon Great Reduction LUMBER!! The three who had survived entreated that an end might be put to their sufferings, and thus much mercy was accorded them. Their bodies were hurled into the pit, and the hellish deed was nitly completed by the slaughter of two beautiful, fair-haired children, who had inexplicably escaped up to that time, and were gazing, benumbed with horror, upon the ghastly spectacle in the well. The avenging army of Havelock entered Cawnpore on the 17th of June, the dastardly Nena not waiting to contest the place, and one of Sir Henry's officers wrote thus of what he saw: "I was directed to the house where all the poor, miserable ladies were murdered. It was alongside the Cawnpore Hotel, where the Nena lived. I never was more borrified. The place was one mass of blood. I am not exaggerating when I tell that the soles of my boots were more than covered with the blood of those poor, wretched creatures. Portions of their dresses, collars, children's socks, and ladies' round hats lay about, saturation with blood; and in the sword-cuts on the wooden pillars of the room, long dark hair was carried by the edge of the weapon, and there hung their tresses—a most painful sight. I have often wished since that I had never been there, but sometimes wish that every soldier was taken there, that he might witness the barbarities our country suffered. Their bodies were afterwards dragged out and thrown down a well outside the building, where their limbs were to be seen stalking out in gory confusion." Two hundred and five women and children perished in the Massacre of Cawnpore: the bloody tyrant who perpetrated the atrocious crime has escaped pursuit up to the present time, though the most persistent and vigorous efforts were made by the British Government to secure his capture. His immunity must be ascribed to the sympathy of the people among whom he sought refuge, and who regained him not as a murderer but as a hero. His fate, if the nags of his arrest be confirmed, cannot be doubted. The Government of India could not pardon Nena Sahlib, even though his execution were to be the signal for another mutiny—Sacramento Record. GAZETTE NO. 3 COMPARATIVE FOOD VALUE OF DIFFERENT PRODUCTS. The following stated value of straw and other agricultural products, as found by the analysis made by competent chemists, will be found of great interest and value to farmers, and may assist them in determining what crops to produce as food for stock. Land Commissioner Drummond has found J.K. Hardenberg guilty of the charges of malfeasance in office, preferred against him. From all accounts however, there are two sides to the question. There were 14,000 deaths in New Jersey in 1873, and 1,806 died of consumption. Hoboken was the unhealthiest city in the State, the death rate being one in twenty-six, while in Orange it was but one in 123. A correspondent writes from a Swiss town: "I was much amused on looking over a visitor's book at the inn to find that under the head of 'Occupation' two German girls had written, 'Looking for a husband.'" The British Museum has recently become possessed of a jasmin, a precious stone of exceeding rarity. The specimen is no larger than a pea, and flashes and glows with a lustre which seems to denote the presence of fire and flame. It cost $8,500. A bill has passed the Oregon Legislature which seeks to amend the divorce law to the effect that husbands and wives having no children may procure a divorce of separation simply by ceasing to live together. According to a recent German authority it is beyond dispute that America was discovered by a party of Buddhist priests in the fifth century. Whether they came on purpose to discover it or were cast upon its shores by accident is not stated. Marquis De Beaufillian died recently in Paris at the age of one hundred years. The Reign of Terror was among the recollections of his early manhood, and the Commune and Dan the events which marked the epoch of his closing years. The proposed tunnel under the channel between France and England is thirty miles long—about twenty miles under the water and five miles on each side of gradual approach. The long approach is made necessary by the great depth of the tunnel, which will be 200 feet under the bottom of the channel. In 1862 what was known as the "Wicked Bible" was printed and issued. It derived its title from the fact that the word "not" was accidentally omitted from the seventh commandment by one of the intelligent composers of the period, and an act of Parliament ordered the destruction of the entire edition. The tobacco growers of Virginia have been peculiarly unfortunate this season. In some of the counties where this product is extensively cultivated there will not be one-twentieth of the usual crop secured; in other counties the crop will seldom yield more than one-half or one-third the customary product. Always acknowledge all courtesies in a kindly spirit. Throw a bouquet and a card of thanks to a serenading SECURE THE TOOLS,—If all the reapers, growers and other agricultural machinery and tools used during the summer and wanted for winter use, are not cleaned up and carefully stored away out of the coming wet winter weather, no time should be lost by any farmer in the State in performing this important work. All the wood work of such machines and tools should be well cleaned and painted and the iron work, especially the working parts, should be well cleaned and oiled. A very little care and work in taking care of these things in this way will save a great deal of labor in accumulating means to pay for new ones. If there are any great leaks on the farms in California, the want of care of agricultural implements is among them. And if there is any class of care that will pay it is this—of care—for these same articles. The Monterey Herald says: Following is the tax lorry on every $100 worth of property in all the counties that we have been able to hear from: San Benito 21 40 San Jacqueline 1 48 Santa Clara 1 40 Marlin 1 46 Santa Cruz 1 65 San Luis Obispo 1 63 Monksey 1 65 Alameda 1 70 Contra Costa 1 80 Napa 1 91 Bette 2 00 Tulare 2 10 Los Angeles 2 16 Mariposa 2 30 Solano 2 80 Honoma 2 40 San Mateo 2 40 Twolamne 2 50 Yuba 2 60 Calaveras 2 80 A Strasbourg paper complains of the production of artificial wine at Kehl, where there is a large establishment much patronised by Strasbourg wine merchants, into which a grape has never entered. This colored and sweetened Rhine water is recognized by the Excelsior grape wine. In the Rheingau and the Palatinate there are hundreds of similar establishments. The Rhamnish and Alaskan wine-growers intend to urge the Englisch to pass a stringent law against the falsification of wine and other drinks. A deputation of Minnesippians are in England negotiating with the Agricultural Estates' Union for the emigration of farm hands to Mississippi. The tobacco growers of Virginia have been peculiarly unfortunate this season. Always acknowledge all courtesies in a kindly spirit. Throw a bouquet and a card of thanks to a serenading party, if not prepared to invite them in. If you haven't a bouquet or a card at hand, throw a boot-jack, or a brick, or anything of that sort, just to show your appreciation of the kindness intended. The Landstrum bill, to be introduced in the German Parliament, will divide the force into two classes; the first to comprise all the able-bodied men up to the age of forty-two, which will be 85,000 to the German army, and the second to include the rest. When this bill becomes a law the German forces without the second class, will number from 1,700,000 to 1,800,000. A second Austrian Arctic Exploring Expedition is being prepared to start next Summer. One-half the expedition will seek to advance to the North under Lieut. Payer, by way of Emm Greenland, and the other half, under Count Wilekes, will proceed via Siberia. The object of the expedition is to ascertain if the newly-discovered Franz Joseph Land is a landmark or an island. The details of a case of poisoning reported from Waltzen recall the findings of murderous science. The daughter of a physician in that place fell dead in her father's room, and it was asserted that she had died from poison. She had a suitor whose courtship was not regarded by her parents with a favorable eye, and she was alive a time, induced to contemplate marriage with another. The wedding was to take place in a week, when she took a walk with her former lover, at the end of which he left her at her own door, and then went down to his father's country place. He there confirmed that he had placed a strong poison, the smell of which alone will kill in the pocket of his beloved, knowing that as soon as she lifted her hand-held to her face a fatal result would follow. It appears from the event that he had not miscalculated the powers of the drug, the nature of which has not yet transpired.
