The average rate of slaughter among the miners in Great Britain is one human being to every 109,109 tons of coal excavated, or 1,038 lives during the year. America improves upon that, and kills a man for every 67,800 tons.

General Howard, of the Freedmen's Bureau, is to be prosecuted civilly and criminally, and before a Court Martial, for his defalcations. It is absolutely impossible to learn from his books how much the government has lost through him and the Young men's Christian Association, which is said to have shared in the plunder.
An unfavorable year should always be a profitable one for a good farmer; then he is to make money, if ever. In favorable years crops are abundant and prices are low. With rich, deep-plowed land, drought need not be feared, and average crops can be grown, which will bring two prices. It is the good farmer only who ever makes money.

Bazaine having been found guilty of the charges growing out of the capitulation of Metz, was unanimously condemned to death, and to be degraded from rank previous to execution. After judgment was rendered, all the members of the Court signed an appeal for mercy, which the Due Aumale immediately conveyed to President MacMahon. The sentence was by him commuted to twenty year's seclusion, and to bear the effect of the degradation from rank. The island of Saint Marguerite has been selected as the place of confinement.
I notice that California farmers are somewhat excited with reference to "Egyptian corn," the seed of which came out of the garments of a mummy. It is said to yield 70 bushels to the acre, and that two crops can be grown in a year. It resembles broom corn, and it is planted and worked like it, and when ground it is much like Indian corn. It is proposed that it take the place of barley. I will state that this corn was tried at the East several years ago, the seed having been sent out by the Patent Office, and that it was found not worth more than 10 cents a bushel. It is, in fact, an old fraud. Finally, always be suspicious of any product that produces two crops a year, and of a country where they can be grown—[An "Ohio Pioneer," in the New York Tribune.]

THERE ARE REMAINING UNSOLD MORE THAN TWO HUNDRED (200) shares of the stock of the SOUTHERN DISTRICT Agricultural Society.
Nearly THREE HUNDRED (300) shares have been taken upon which there have been paid $55, or $5 per share on eleven assessments.
