The tobacco trade is not lively during this weather. Brown's Broncial Troches hold the sway. Call and examine some of the excellent specimens of job printing, recently executed at this office. We understand that W. R. Olden has leased his farm and intends living in Anaheim. Query by an interested person: Was the rain in November the first Fall rain? The suit of Kraemer vs. Kraemer has been postponed until the March term of the District Court. The sheep men are in fine spirits. They have plenty of new feed, and all of their poor sheep are dead. A wool-growers' convention will be held at the Court-house in Los Angeles on Thursday, January 15th, 1874. Judge La Rue has returned from the mines in the Arlington district. He reports two feet of snow in that region. J. K. Tuffree can be found at the store of P. Davis & Ero, every day between the hours of nine and ten A.M. There was a terrible snowstorm on last Wednesday night—but it was on the mountains a hundred miles away. The suit of Harter vs. a Frenchman with an unpronounceable name, to recover the amount of a note, is set for Monday before Justice Clark. Young Calisher, who was fined $40 for an assault on Monday, was released and forgiven upon the payment of the costs of the suit. The time for the payment of State and County taxes expires on the first Monday of January. After that time five per cent will be added. Sin Se Wau has had a little unpleasantness with a "Melican" man, all about a shirt. The affair awaits Fischer offers for sale his property, adjoining Kroeger's vineyard. It has been divided into two and one-half acre tracts, and will be sold on the homestead plan. Payments to be made in monthly installments. The City fathers of Los Angeles require stirring up with a long pole. Why do they not light the Los Angeles river bridge at night? At present it is a most eligible location for the operations of a burglar or an assassin. In our report last week of the election of the Board of Trustees of the Anaheim Lighter Company, we included John Westphal among the gentlemen elected. D. Strodhoff was the one upon whom the honor fell. According to the report of the State Prison Directors, the county of Los Angeles has forty-four representatives in that institution. San Francisco, Santa Clara and Sacramento counties, are the only ones which exceed this number. "The cold chilly winds of December," seem to have a favorable effect on vegetation. Several peach trees have already commenced to bloom, and the blossoms on the strawberry plants give promise of an early appearance of that most delicious fruit. We are requested to announce to all concerned that the installation of the officers elect of Anaheim Lodge, No. 207 F. & A. M., will take place on Saturday, December 27th, at two o'clock P.M. The regular meeting will be held on the evening of the same day. Meers, Heimann & George are receiving a large lot of farming implements of every description. We understand that they will, hereafter, pay especial attention to the hardware trade. Mr. Heimann is now in San Francisco, making all the necessary arrangements. One should take care how he kills a flea. That very flea, according to the Darwinian hypothesis might be the father of something that might be the mother of something that might be the progenitor of something that would ultimately develop into a human being. We understand that at the next session of School classes we prising the most the present Graymembers of the sue the same case are taught in the Los Angeles examination class year of 1873. Vacation of three will be reopened of January, 1874. Anaheim is in possessing in Grammar School so thoroughly an instructor whose modest merit has forced alone from the connection with date, but from the county at large, we are averse to in the present in some public recourse and efficient community his due, and him. Sin Se Wau has had a little unpleasantness with a "Melican" man, all about a shirt. The affair awaits the arrival of a Chinese interpreter from Los Angeles. Rev. J. E. Miller, of the M. E. Church South, will preach in the Presbyterian church, the fourth Saturday in each month, at 3 o'clock P.M. The committee of arrangements for the Christmas Tree festival are requested to meet in Clark & Austin's reading room this evening at 7:30 P.M. Amongst the deeds filed in the County Clerk's office, we notice one from H. Bremermann to B. Cohen for 10 acres of land. Consideration, $87626. The Anaheim String Band have been regularly organized and are prepared to entertain proposals to furnish music for Christmas and New Year balls. We note in the passenger list of the steamer Orizaba, due to-day, the names of Mrs. Olden and daughter, Gustav Davis and wife and A. W. Steinhart. The brother of Dr. McCoy, of Westminster, and his family, arrived by the steamer Mohongo. Several other families from the East came with them and intend locating permanently at Westminster. THE EXAMINATION OF THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS. The Grammer School—Proficiency of the Pupil—a High School to be Organized—Anahaim's Good Fortune—General Remarks, wise and otherwise. The examination of the Grammar School of Anahaim, of which due notice was given in last week's issues was commenced on Thursday morning, continuing the whole of that day, and a greater portion of Friday. The attendance was quite large and showed that Anahaim was interested in the education of its rising generation. Classes in History of the United States, Physical Geography, Arithmetic, Grammar, Physiology, Natural Philosophy and Algebra were submitted to a severe and critical examination by Mr. Guinn. The pupils generally, showed a great proficiency and thoroughness in all these different branches, and acquitted themselves in a manner, which reflected much credit upon themselves, and exhibited to a marked degree the efficient management of their teacher. The Intermediate class, under the tuition of Miss Marquis, was also examined during the afternoon of Friday. The little ones were thoroughly posted in all their little studies, answered readily and without hesitation every question asked them, not only by the lady in charge, but by the audience as well. They, too, showed creditable proficiency, and did honor The Art and Photographic Gallery of V. "He left us when his manly heart With earnest hope was beating high; Too soon it seemed for us to part; Too soon, alas! for him to die. We have the tenement of clay, But aye the soul has passed away. Great spirit! we will weep no more, But lay our selfishness to rest; The Providence, which we adore, Has ordered all things for the best. Life's battle fought, the victory won, To nobler tolls pass on." SPECIAL NOTICES. The Intermediate class, under the tuition of Miss Marquis, was also examined during the afternoon of Friday. The little ones were thoroughly posted in all their little studies, answered readily and without hesitation every question asked them, not only by the lady in charge, but by the audience as well. They, too, showed creditable proficiency, and did honor to the exertions of Miss Marquis in their behalf. We understand from Mr. Guinn that at the commencement of the next session of the school, High School classes will be formed, comprising the most advanced pupils of the present Grammar School. The members of these classes will pursue the same course of studies as are taught in the advanced classes of the Los Angeles High School. This examination closed the scholastic year of 1873. There will be a vacation of three weeks, and school will be reopened on the 2d Monday of January, 1874. Anaheim is peculiarly fortunate in possessing in the principal of its Grammar School a gentleman, so thoroughly qualified to be an instructor of youth, and whose modest and unassuming merit has forced appreciation not alone from those parents, whose connection with him has been intimate, but from the citizens of the county at large. As a general rule, we are averse to public praise, but in the present instance we feel that some public recognition of his able and efficient conduct of school affairs is his due, and should be awarded to him. In this connection we can not refrain from expressing again our belief in the necessity of some change in the system of taxation for school purposes and the disposition of the school fund. We have every portion of our school apparatus complete except a supply of money. We have able teachers and abundance of school-room, but a scarcity of coin. This is the result of the present inefficient system; it requires a radical change. Christmas Goods.—Messrs. Clark & Austin have distinguished them- SPECIAL NOTICES. Clark & Austin have distinguished themselves this year in their preparations to make glad the hearts of the little ones. Santa Claus visited them this week and left behind him every description of toy imaginable, from a great big crying doll to a penny whistle. The older children have not been forgotten either. There are nice presents of all kinds, organs, albums and a vast number of other things, too numerous to mention. The best plan, however, is for every one to give them a call and see for themselves. Out of their large variety no one can leave unsatisfied. Almost a Fire.—On Thursday morning, a smoke was discovered issuing from the roof of Thompson's saddlery. Investigation proved that the portion of the roof surrounding the stove pipe was in flames. Fortunately, the fire had made so little headway that the efforts to subdue it were successful and, beyond a hole in the roof, no damage resulted.
