KNOWLTON VS. ANAHEIM.
In a long and elaborately written article from the pen of Professor Knowlton, entitled "Southwestern California" and published in the Resources of California, there appear certain remarks regarding Anaheim and its climate, which, based upon a theory that is contraverted by actual fact, are calculated to detract from the advantages really possessed by the section in question as a place of invalid resort.
Prof. Knowlton prefaces his article with the statement that his information has been acquired by "twenty day's travel and personal observation," and further along says that he states what he learned to be actual facts, either by personal observation or reliable testimony." The absurdity of acquiring any reliable information by a personal observation during a flying trip of three weeks duration over a country whose area is larger than almost any one of the Eastern States, is apparent at a glance. The "thoroughly reliable testimony" must have been given either by citizens of Los Angeles or San Diego, as the Professor did not honor Anaheim, or the section to which he devotes so large a portion of his space with his presence at all. The known antagonism which has always been exhibited towards Anaheim and its surroundings by the people of Los Angeles, and which can not be concealed, undoubtedly colors their opinions regarding this section, and would therefore be taken cum grano salis by a critical listener. As long as the Professor confined himself to his text books and to the description of what he actually saw he

Angeles or San Diego, as the Professor did not honor Anaheim, or the section to which he devotes so large a portion of his space with his presence at all. The known antagonism which has always been exhibited towards Anaheim and its surroundings by the people of Los Angeles, and which cannot be concealed undoubtedly colors their opinions regarding this section, and would therefore be taken cum grano salis by a critical listener. As long as the Professor confined himself to his text books and to the description of what he actually saw he is not only interesting, but reliable; but when he examines the valley of the Santa Ana river through the spectacles of its neighbors and enemies of Los Angeles, and asserte as facts the information so derived, he becomes unconsciously unjust.
After mentioning at some length the climatic advantages possessed by Santa Barbara as shown by the thermometrical record of the Santa Barbara Pres, after incorporating into his article the weather tables of the U.S. Signal Service at San Diego, Mr Knowlton publishes in full a letter from Francis S. Miles of New York to Chas. Nordhoff, in which Anaheim is favorably mentioned. We quote the Professor's remarks upon Mr. Miles' letter, premising that he, by intimation gives full credence to the record of a newspaper, undoubtedly interested in the development of its particular locality: "This letter gives no sign that Mr. Miles had seen any other place and climate than that of Anaheim. If that called forth such encomiums, an equal residence in either Santa Barbara or San Diego would have rendered him bankrupt in epithets. Though extremely pleasant in climate, Anaheim is too far from the sea and too little sheltered by mountains or high land, to claim equal uniformity with either of the two other places."
Mr. Nordhoff, an old friend and acquaintance of Mr. Miles, knew that the latter gentleman had spent years in the south of Europe, seeking a locality whose climate was conducive to the restoration of a constitution, impaired by pulmonary disease; he knew that this search had proved of no avail and that his friend, still seeking a health restoring air, had come to the Pacific coast; he knew that Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, San Bernardino and San Diego had been successively tried with no better result; and he knew that, at the time when the letter quoted was written, Mr. Miles had passed several months in Anaheim in search of the same object. That Mr. Nordhoff considered the opinion of Mr. Miles entitled to much consideration is evidenced by the publishing of this testimony in favor of an unknown place; this opinion will be accorded due credence by the invalid public, and will be accepted by them as correctly formed, when it is taken into consideration that it is

We are gratified to note that the mencement has at last been made to undertake the work directly the largest amount from the construction of the will throw into market a large portion of their most valuable lands which present unsalable on account of a means of irrigation same time, the benefits direct and which will accrue to the whole value of the Santa Ana river, are numerous to mention. It will aid and unite all the different waters at present existing on this river; it will economize and save water, now running to waste point of beginning; it will reduce several thousands of acres Kraemer and Yorba ranches; it into the country wealth and power; it will restore to the minima people that confidence in our triumph.
Diego had been successively tried with no better result; and he knew that, at the time when the letter quoted was written, Mr. Miles had passed several months in Anaheim in search of the same object. That Mr. Nordhoff considered the opinion of Mr. Miles entitled to much consideration is evidenced by the publishing of this testimony in favor of an unknown place; this opinion will be accorded due credence by the invalid public, and will be accepted by them, as correctly formed, when it is taken into consideration that it is the result of the personal observation and critical investigation of a gentleman who, in searching for the best health resort, was actuated by the strongest incentive possible—the preservation of his own life.
Let us compare, however, the temperature of Santa Barbara and San Diego, as given by Prof. Knowlton with the result of the observations of Mr. Miles. We quote in reference to Santa Barbara "Tables kept by the Santa Barbara Press, and copied by Nordhoff, show that the average temperature in Santa Barbara, for 1870-71, was 60.20 degrees." * * *
At Santa Barbara the coldest day of the year ending with March 1871 was February 22d when the temperature was 43 degrees; the hottest day was October 20th when the mercury rose to 92 degrees. Thus that year had a variation or range of 50 degrees a temperature." Consulting the tables of the U.S Signal Service, we find that in San Diego the average monthly temperature for the year 1872-73 was lowest in February. 1873, being 52.83 degrees and was highest in August 1872, being 68.95 degrees, with a yearly average of 60.08 degrees, and a difference between highest and lowest temperatures of 16.07 degrees. The coldest day in Anaheim occurred in February, 1873—a month which was much more severe throughout the whole state than its corresponding month in 1871—when the thermometer sink to 44 degrees, or two degrees higher than in Santa Barbara, while the warmest day was in October 1872, the thermometer reaching same time, the benefits direct and which will accrue to the whole water of the Santa Ana river, are numerous to mention. It will end and unite all the different waters at present existing on this river; it will economize and save water, now running to waste point of beginning; it will reduce several thousands of acres Kraemer and Yorba ranches; it into the country wealth and power; it will restore to the min people, that confidence in our turbines has been so badly snaken by these years, just ended. This begins already given to our future a new coloring; with the actual commencement of the work of construction, this tion of our hopes will begin.
THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC WAY
During the interest and excitement upon the campaign for just closed, but little attention to the doings of the Southern and in fact, the presence of their in the county was almost unkempt general public. The company had little trouble however. The section Florence and Gallatin has been a large force is at work on a port twenty-five mile section, lying Los Angeles. Nearly all the needed have been received at West and as soon as the iron arrives, will be commenced. From preparations there is no doubt that miles of road, which they are build in order to receive the sun them, will be completed by Feb. We say fifty miles" because opinion, the branch between A Compton will be offered as a section of the trunk line, and if the company will kill two birch trees. We can, therefore, reason that by this time next year between San Francisco and Anbe be almost entirely closed.
The lowest average monthly rain for the year 1872-73 occurred in January, 1873 being 57.33 degrees and the temperature was shown in March 1872, the average being 74 degrees with a difference of 16.67 degrees daily average of 67.02 degrees.
Connection to present records: States signal service at San Mateo and Mr. Miller, of this place, in the comparison between the two may be more fully made:
