Wheat Supply for 1873 and 1874
We have frequently called attention to the fact that the European demand for wheat regulates the price in America. This will remain true so long as Europe does not produce sufficient wheat to supply her own people and America produces more than her own people require for home consumption. We have also mentioned that had the surplus of California for this year been doubled or reduced one-half that such increase or reduction could not have affected the price of wheat in Liverpool, the great wheat market of the world, in any perceptible manner. The fact that Europe has the capacity, under generally favorable circumstances, to supply her own demand, and that each year is rendering it more probable that these circumstances will be brought about, admonishes California wheat growers to prepare to be independent of European demand by multiplying or diversifying our agricultural products. The present condition of wheat supply and demand the world over is such, in our opinion, as to warrant the expectation of higher prices than rule for the balance of the year 1873. Not only this, we believe the same condition will warrant rather more than a usual effort on the part of wheat growers of the State to produce a large crop for 1874. The London Times estimates that the deficit of home proture, come to no other than there is a deficiency wheat supply for that the crop of 1873 arily be drawn upon to bring the relation demand for the wo same condition in which 1873 found it. It is with one of the first that as the supply demand, just in that price of the article ap- accordance with this expect the price of avance until it reaches price, and there remi crop of 1874, in prosper shall reduce it. wheat supply and demand the world over is such, in our opinion, as to warrant the expectation of higher prices than rule for the balance of the year 1873. Not only this, we believe the same condition will warrant rather more than a usual effort on the part of wheat growers of the State to produce a large crop for 1874. The London Times estimates that the deficit of home production in Great Britain is eleven and a half million quarters, or ninety-two millions of bushels, or about twenty per cent above the average deficit of the last four years. The same paper and the Mark Lane Express both confirm reports previously received of short wheat crops in the United Kingdom, France and Hungary, and that but an average crop can be realized in Germany. The bread riots now in vogue in Paris show that France is likely to enter the field as an importer instead of exporter for the coming season. Germany will have no surplus, if she is able to supply her own wants, while Hungary will have considerably less than usual for export. It is evident from the foregoing facts that Great Britain must rely mainly on Russia and the United States to make up her deficit of ninety-two millions of bushels. Now let us see what that reliance is. The average export of wheat from all Russia for the years 1870, 1871 and 1872 was a little above fifty millions of bushels. On the 21st of June, T. C. Smith, our Consul at Odessa, wrote: "The present year promises to be the most productive anything like intelligence enough cultivation and dependence on nature sure, is not true of the lemon and lime orchard yards such as those of Titus, the famous Wine and a few others. I am of exceptions such as his success has grown from fact that they are exceeding the ranchmen and farmers They spread themselves altogether too thin. Their bitious to boast of how they own or hold insurgently they till it well, but how much," their motto. In the they generally attempt keep him constantly acres and make far from them, too. However, each man goes to manage from two acres, thereby excluding others who might work their own profit and advantage, as well.
The history of the Amendment tends to prove all the mutual aid of aive company system, with each man to do a greater than he could hope to alone. The more thriving successful colonists find acre lots more than though cultivate without course I am not now the raising of grain or the careful and thorough landed by those finishing the orange, the lemon,

ever known to Russia, the weather and the condition of the fields being all that could be desired up till now." Since that time contradictory reports have been received, and we regard the probabilities rather in favor of a crop below than above the average. The Agricultural Department estimates the crop of the United States for this year twenty millions short of last year. The corn crop of the great West is also estimated for this year as below the average, and will, therefore, decrease the amount of wheat for export. We can, therefore, come to no other conclusion than there is a deficit in the world's wheat supply for this year, and that the crop of 1874 must necessarily be drawn upon pretty heavily to bring the relation of supply and demand for the world up to the same condition in which the crop of 1873 found it. It is in accordance with one of the first rules of trade that as the supply falls short of demand just in that proportion the grape, the fig, the walnut and similar fruits for which this section is especially adapted and for which it has become most noted. For the ordinary farmer who has not means to hire help, the better plan is to reduce the quantity of his productions and improve the quality by cultivating less land and putting more work into and upon what he does cultivate.
Most farm and ranch buildings throughout south-western California and throughout the State, indeed, are small and shabby; they show an indifference to the personal comfort and health of the wife and family, that is anything but creditable to the gallantry and courtesy, for which the Californian likes to be praised. It is true that in such a climate they have less need of barns and stables than east, but that ought to leave them freer to build and beautify the house and its surroundings. Carelessness is one of the most marked characteristics of the country. The thorough careful cultivation
more, come to no other conclusion than there is a deficit in the world's wheat supply for this year, and that the crop of 1874 must necessarily be drawn upon pretty heavily to bring the relation of supply and demand for the world up to the same condition in which the crop of 1873 found it. It is in accordance with one of the first rules of trade that as the supply falls short of demand, just in that proportion the price of the article appreciates. In accordance with this rule we may expect the price of wheat to advance until it reaches the maximum price, and there remain until the crop of 1874, in prospect or reality, shall reduce it. What that maximum price may be we cannot undertake to say. This will depend upon the world's supply of coarser articles of food available. We expect to see wheat worth $250 per cental, and perhaps $3. With such prospects for the price of wheat, at least in the commencement of 1874, it is no difficult thing for the farmers of California to see where their profitable profits in farming lie for the coming season. We think they will be warranted in devoting a large breadth of land to wheat. From their experience of this year they would undoubtedly do so. But we wish they shall do so after a full understanding of the whole case.

Unthrifty Tilth.
The following is an extract from an article in the August number of the Resources of California, from the pen of Prof. Knowlton. Speaking of Southern California, he says: "In no part of the Union have I ever seen such complete absence of anything like intelligent and thorough cultivation and such complete dependence on nature. This, to be sure, is not true of the large orange, lemon and lime orchards and vine-ards such as those of Wilson, Roseitus, the famous Wolfskill place and a few others. I am not speak- exceptions such as these, whose success has grown from the very fact that they are exceptions, but of no reason men and farmers will."
anything like intelligent and thorough cultivation and such complete independence on nature. This, to be sure, is not true of the large orange, lemon and lime orchards and vineyards such as those of Wilson, Rose Citrus, the famous Wolfskill place and a few others. I am not speaking exceptions such as these, whose success has grown from the very fact that they are exceptions, but of the ranchmen and farmers generally, they spread themselves too much; together too thin. They seem amotious to boast of how many acres they own or hold instead of how thoroughly they till it. "Not how well, but how much," seems to be their motto. In the crops which they generally attempt, one man can keep him constantly busy on five acres and make far greater profit from them, too. Instead of this however, each man generally tries to manage from twenty to forty acres, thereby excluding five or six others who might work near him for their own profit and much to his advantage, as well.
The history of the Anabeim settlement tends to prove this. With all the mutual aid of the cooperative company system, which enabled each man to do a great deal more than he could hope to accomplish alone. The more thrifty and successful colonists find their twenty lots more than they can thoroughly cultivate without help. Of course I am not now referring to the raising of grain or stock, but of the careful and thorough cultivation demanded by those finer products, the orange, the lemon, the lime, the Mexican parts of the State.
Throughout most of this section the soil seems, indeed, to require no other fertilizer than judiciously applied water. This, with thorough and frequent pulverization of the soil to give atmospheric elements and influences full effect, has thus far proved amply sufficient to secure regular, abundant and satisfactory results. How long the soil will stand this constant taking out and never putting in, the majority seem rarely to think and seldom to care.
