$500,000 by J. C. Williamson dealing in forged railroad bonds on the New York Central, the Buffalo and New York and the Erie Companies.
A dispatch from Halifax says that over one hundred vessels are ashore at Cape Breton. Forty bodies have been washed ashore on Prince Edward's Island. Others are coming ashore constantly. On the fleet of over 300 fishing vessels only 20 remain. The water rose eighteen feet above low water mark. Several vessels were lost with all on board.
An arrival at San Francisco from the Marquesas Islands report that the native cannibals recently attacked a plantation, murdered two women and one man and took their bodies to the mountains, where they were probably eaten. A French corvette went from Tahiti and after shelling the islands seven days, compelled the cannibals to surrender four chiefs, who are being taken to Tahiti, where they will be executed.
Newspapers in the State are now engaged in giving accounts of great threshing feats. The Marysville Appeal gives the following exploit of John Wilkie: In five days and a half, with a single horse-power machine, thirty-six inch cylinder, of the Pitch & Pool make, he threshed 11,300 bushels of grain. In 52 days he threshed 80,422 bushels. This work was done in Sutter county, 12 miles below Yuba City, and is unquestionably the biggest threshing feat of the season.
How the bustle of the period saved a young girl's life is thus told by the Lancaster (Pennsylvania) Express, the parties being Mr. Musser and a Philadelphia lady: In turning a curve, they turned too suddenly, resulting in a tilt of the buggy, which threw the girl head foremost from her seat. Her body had already left the buggy, and she was descending upon her head between the wheels when Mr. Musser seized her by the bustle with his left hand, while he grasped the reins and checked the horse with the right hand. The bustle was
ser and a Philadelphia lady: In turning a curve, they turned too suddenly, resulting in a tilt of the buggy, which threw the girl head foremost from her seat. Her body had already left the buggy, and she was descending upon her head between the wheels when Mr. Musser seized her by the bustle with his left hand, while he grasped the reins and checked the horse with the right hand. The bustle was fortunately well secured, and the lady was saved.
In the last number of Macmillan's Magazine is a single page, with the signature "H Bartle G. Frere," a name that guarantees the accuracy of the writer's statement. He publishes eight lines of verse by Sir Walter Scott. They form a kind of introduction to Burns' "Address of Robert Bruce before Bannockburn," Sir Walter thought that the opening of those beautiful lines was "too abrupt," and that Burns would, on consideration, have pre-faced them with some words showing the notation. Scott talking over this with a friend, hastily penciled the sort of thing he meant, and his lines are before us. This is a literary anecdote of great interest, and as such it is most welcome. Scott on Burns must be listened to with especial reverence:
"'By Bannockburn proud Edward lay; The Scots they were na far away, Just waiting for the break o' day, To show them which were best. The sun rose o'er the purple heath, And lighted up the field of death, When Bruce, wi' soul-inspiring breath, His soldiers thus address': "'Scots who hae wi' Wallace bled,'" etc.
