Southern Californian SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 6 1873 Kleinigkeiten, The regular meeting of the F. & A. M. will be held tonight. Services will be held in the Catholic Church on the 14th just. The harvesting of the vineyards will commence probably next week. The Indians are coming in from the retreats, wherein they spend their hours of "busted" idleness. Goodman & Rimpau are selling their summer stock of goods off at cost. See their advertisement. Farmers are busily engaged threshing their small grain and sacking it for shipment. M. Gray, the San Francisco music publisher, has sent us the beautiful ballads "You and I," and "As the light fades from mine eyes." Messrs. Dreylus, Hanna Kirby and Hatborstadt left on Thursday for the newly discovered hydraulic "diggings." H McLellan, the courteous agent of the Pacific Mail Steamship Co., was in town on Thursday. He was in attendance on the suit of Catsher vs. the Anaheim Lighter Company. The Anaheim "ring" was jubilant Wednesday night. H McLellan, the courteous agent of the Pacific Mail Steamship Co., was in town on Thursday. He was in attendance on the suit of Carsher vs. the Anaheim Lighter Company. The Anaheim "ring" was jubilant Wednesday night. Under the influence of bad whisky and entitlement, they forgot that there were other precincts than Anaheim in the county. The new Code has much to answer for. Under it, election day is as monotonous as an ordinary day. Only two fights amongst three hundred voters is positively a distressing state of affairs—to the local The most delightful season of the year in modern Arcadia or Southern California, is just commencing. Our cool, abracing nights and warm, pleasant days prove more beneficial to the invaded than a whole pharmacopoea of "Doctor's stuff." Dr Ellis has gone from our gaze. He has retired to the classic locales of Westminster, and, in order that when the floods come and he may become a veritable Rottleson Crusoe, he has taken with him a dog and a goat. Lovers of music are especially favored in having with them as instructors, Signor and Signora Catalano. They have selected Anaheim as their residence, and will instruct advanced pupils in the Art Divine. "Twas bright, twas heavenly, batis past." All of the free and enlightened citizens of the great Republic slowly, sadly and singly go into the barrooms and deposit a short bit for their butlers. No more free drinks until 1875. The suit of Carsher & Co. against the Anaheim Lighter Co. of which we made mention two weeks ago, was tried before Judge Clark on Thursday. That gentleman rendered a decision in favor of the defendant. The case will probably be appealed. The suit of Carsher & Co against the Anaheim Lighter Co. of which we made mention two weeks ago, was tried before Judge Clark on Thursday. That gentleman rendered a decision in favor of the defendant. The case will probably be appealed. On Thursday Sin See Wau and his friends held in front of the Chinese quarter certain burial ceremonies, with appropriate candles and chants. Whether these rites had any connection with the defunct Democracy of Los Angeles county, we are not yet prepared to say. A letter received by Mr Wm Estos, from the postmaster of the town, near which it was reported Dan Moody was killed, states that the victim was named Kelly, a sheep herder. So it is probable that Daniel still liveth. Mr J. L. Ward of Los Angeles accompanied Mr. McLellan in his recent visit to Anaheim. Mr. Ward is one of the most energetic business men in Los Angeles, and it might be well for the people of Anaheim to cultivate his acquaintance. Read his advertisement on the fourth page. One of the most interesting sights, which has occurred in Anaheim for a long time, was the departure of Dr. E. for his shooting box. The goat was tied to the wagon with house-hold furniture, the dog was after the goat, the Doctor was after the dog, and the good citizens, assembled, looked on with delight and admiration, commingled with sorrow. More energetically, more enthusiastically and more vociferously to the transaction of the public business. On Center and Los Angeles street might be seen small groups of men scattered here and there, arguing, gesticulating and every little white, mysteriously disappearing to discuss the only topic upon which there seemed to be the slightest unanimity of opinion. The main interest of course centred in the election of Assemblymen, although the friends of Mr. Rwan the candidate for County Treasurer, were not idle in their endeavors to procure for him a large majority over his opponent, whilst the enemies of Capt. Thom, the present able and worthy District Attorney, were extremely active in their attempt to promote his defeat. Beneath this, ran the usual current of interest felt by the friends of the different candidates for the strictly local offices, those of Supervisor and Constable. Towards evening, and as the end of the contest approached, there appeared from time to time evidences of that state of affairs, which maketh glad the heart of the reporter. Unfortunately however in the only case where a resort was made to blows, both parties had worshipped so assiduously at the shrine of Bacchus, that only the desire and will was strong, their physical imbecility was equally as great. Altogether, the day of election, which has just passed, was the most orderly that ever has occurred in Anaheim and ended more quietly and pleasantly than is usual. ELECTION RETURNS. We present below to our readers, our usual record of the wet and dry bulbs of the hygrometer, prepared by Mr. Francis S. Miles of this place. ENTERPRISE. — We had the pleasure a few days since of inspecting the vineyard of Mr. H. Richter, and were much gratified at the improvement which has been made in short a time. Mr. Richter, since his purchase of the lot about two years ago, has been busily engaged setting out young vinegards. He has adopted a new method of planting. Instead of making the holes in which the cuttings are inserted with a drill, he uses a shovel, and judging from the appearance of a young vineyard, nly six months old, which was covered with graces the extra labor, which he expends in so doing, gives to him an ample reward. The vineyardists on the outside, who during this year have failed in obtaining a stand of vines would do well to examine Mr. Richter. PLANTERS’ HOTEL. — Mine host of the Planters’ possesses one of those seductive tongues that renders him perfectly irresistible, as we know to our cost. He has enticed to his kitchen that famous cook Moise. Pochoot, whose savory dishes were once the pride of the hearts and the delight of the stomachs of the passions of the Challenge Restraint. Ye local is in despair and abolishes transfers himself to the sanitary supplied board of the Planters’ will most assuredly die, either of a broken heart or of a dyspeptic stomach. Every one who wishes to enjoy the best of good living prepared by the prince of cooks, must go and eat at Fischer’s. PETERS’ MUSICAL MONTHLY. — By sending for the September number of Peters’ Musical Monthly, price 30 cents you will get tour songs, a sacred quartet, a four handed piece, and four instrumental pieces, worth $4 in sheet form. Thirty cents is but a small outlay to test the merits of Peters’ Magazine. Send for a copy, and our word for it, you will never regret the outlay. Address: J. L. Peters, 599 Broadway, New York. JOHN DOE VS. RICHARD ROE. — The late unpleasantness between these two individuals, which has assumed at different times the different phases of the duello, the prize ring and the literary attack, culminated and terminated during the present week in a law suit before Judge Instead of making the holes in which the cuttings are inserted with a drill, he uses a shovel and judging from the appearance of a young vineyard, only six months old, which was covered with graves, the extra labor, which he expended so doing, gives to him an ample reward. The vineyardists on the outside, who during this year have failed in obtaining a stand of vines would do well to examine Mr. Rochester's place and receive instruction from him. Accident.—We are indebted to Dr. J. S. Gardiner for the following particulars of a painful accident: I seem that on last Wednesday afternoon, Mr. Ephraim Fithian was returning to his home from Anaheim, in company with his son-in-law, Mr. W. J. Smith. The old gentleman was seated on a chair in the wagon, and when opposite Mrs. Schneider's vineyard, a sudden jolt capsized the chair, throwing it occupant out, his hip and head striking on the hind gate of the wagon. Although suffering a great deal of pain, nothing serious is apprehended. The Emitter Hydraulic Mining Company.—A mining company has been organized here under the above name for the purpose of working a hydraulic claim in the San Bernardino mountains, near the head-waters of the Santa Ana river. Four of the owners left on Thursday in order to examine the claim and inaugurate active work. The pay-dirt is said to be very rich in gold. John Doe vs. Richard Roer.—The late unpleasantness between these two individuals, which has assumed at different times the different phases of the duello, the prize ring and the literary attack, culminated and terminated during the present week in a law suit before Judge Clark in which the plaintiff was unsuccessful. "Sich is life." New Books.—Clark & Austin have added several new and valuable works to their circulating Library. The reading of any one of which is worth the price asked for a year's subscription to the Library. The addition comprise such books as "Ten years in Wall Street," and "The first century of our National Existence." Job Printing.—We have thoroughly renovated our Job office, and are now prepared to do job work of every description upon the shortest notice, and at Los Angles or San Francisco races. It will be greatly to the advantage of those wishing work done, to give us a call before going elsewhere. Born.
