No greater tribute can be paid to the merits of Anaheim, as a health resort and summer residence, than the fact that an old Californian like our friend Mr. A. Schmolz, who has visited and knows every section of the State, selects it as the only enjoyable spot, where in to pass a few weeks of recreation.
The announcements of Jas. D. Byrd and David Davis, as candidates for Constables of this Township, appear in our column of "political announcements" to-day. Messrs. Byrd and Davis have both filled the office, to which they now aspire, and during their terms invariably gave satisfaction. We believe them to be capable and efficient men, and, as such, we recommend them to the notice of the public.
We were pleased to receive a visit from H. M. Mitchell, candidate for Public Administrator, on Thursday. Mr. Mitchell was one of the earliest acquaintances, made by us, on coming to Los Angeles county, and has impressed favorably ourselves, as well as all his many friends by his eminent personal merit. As he has no opposition, he does not need the active support of his friends, but yet we can not refrain from endorsing him, as a true gentleman and as an able, rising lawyer.
He is Master of the first Grange organized in this State—the Napa Grange, is Secretary of the State Grange, and has been selected by Grand National Deputy Garrison, of Iowa, to perfect the organization of the Patrons of Husbandry in California. The Order has been singularly fortunate in having secured the services of a gentleman, so eminently qualified as Mr. Baxter. United to that nameless charm of manner and expression, with which one so rarely meets and the possession of which enhances so greatly the influence exerted by the pioneers of a popular cause, he brings to his work a long experience in the inner California life, an intimate knowledge of the sentiments and feelings of the farming community and an earnestness of purpose to do good.
THE ORDER IN CALIFORNIA.
In a conversation with him, we were enabled to form a slight conception of the magic growth of the Order in this State. At the commencement of the present year the number of members west of the Sierras might almost be counted upon the fingers, and now there is scarcely a county in the State which has not within its limits one or more Granges in complete working order.
THE ORDER IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY.
Since Mr. Baxter's arrival, last week, he has devoted every moment to the organization of Granges, recently formed in this county. He tells us that he has already organized a Grange in the city of Los Angeles, one at Compton, one at La
Dow and one at El Monte. He was at Gallatin yesterday, in pursuance of his work, and to-day will install the officers of the New River Grange. These, with the Granges here and at Richland, make the number in the county of Los Angeles eight, containing on their rolls the bone and sinew of the county. On his return to the northern portion of the State he will visit in Santa Barbara county, Carpenteria, Saticoy and Santa Barbara, at each of which places are Granges awaiting his arrival to commence work in earnest.
SPIRITUALISM.—On Thursday evening, Mrs. P. W. Stevens of Sacramento gave a lecture on spiritualism. As it is her usual custom to have the audience select the subject, a committee was appointed for that purpose. The subject selected by them was "What is the necessity for spiritual manifestations?" Her answer to that conundrum was lengthy and satisfactory, and was delivered in a manner peculiarly her own.
THE CONCERT. — On Thursday night the Westminster Choir gave a concert at Enterprise Hall, for the purpose of raising funds to procure an organ. The audience was small, but select and appreciative. Of the singers, naught but praise can be said; and the readings of Mr. Poor elicited much mirth. The entertainment was repeated at Santa Ana
