Field must be reduced to a ditches may be of any size suit the condition or supEarly in the winter, or rain the land must be well pulved then be covered with water turned off as to have fr cultivate again and plant in The land being well pulv culture. another means of diversifying and making more profitable the agriculture of California, we desire to call the attention farmers to the cultivation of rice the grains used for human food which nutritious properties ranks next at and maize, or in corn; while the principal food for a greater number of the people of the earth than any single article of human food. In it is the principal support of the valation of eastern and southern Asia adjacent islands, and of the East In cultivation and food it occupies some place in all warm climates that does in cold or temperate climates and rice, however, are cultivated to great extent in the same countries over a very large breadth of the surface. They flourish together in Mary and North and South are adied in many of the countries in the Europe and we believe that the sea and soil of California are as we need to the cultivation of rice as so The only thing we need in Calito become successful rice-growing ourselves with the proper fator irrigation. Before going out of cultivation, however, we will ment look into the or turrows are made about fifteen inches apart and at right angles to the large ditches. The seed is then scattered in these trenches, sowing from two and a half to three bushels to the acre, and slightly cover with the hoe, or any other manner that is most convenient or economical, providing it is done uniformly. The water is then turned on and kept on four or five days, or until the grain is sprouted. It is then drained off until the sprouts are from one to three inches long, when it is again let on and kept on from tour to six days, and then turned off until the land is sufficiently dried to cultivate well. This cultivation having been well done—generally with a hoe—the water is turned on again and the field is "laid by," for the rice to grow and mature. From this time the field is kept covered with water from one to two feet—being careful that the top of the grain is kept above the surface until the heads appear and the grain is matured. This is about two months. A few days before cutting, the water is turned off and the grain allowed to dry. The grain is then cut with a sickle or cradle—the soil being too murky to allow cutting with a reaper and hose, the gathering and threshing is very much like other grains. The grain then has to be cleaned of the chaff or husks, and there is a uniform use- DEMAND OR MARKET. Withstanding the Southern States have extensive cultivators of rice for a seed and fifty years past. The countryside of the country now that United States have always been large water of this grain. In 1867 the imposition was 44,782,223 pounds. It is well that the Chinese population on the coast make rice the principal article and that the importation direct to San Francisco is very great. To estimate the amount we have made inquiry and find that the intellect must rechance estimate that each China in the country consumes on an average and a half pounds of rice per day is supposed to be about 97,000 people in the State or on the coast and a half pounds per day their consumption of rice would be about 560 pounds. At six cents a pound average price) this would be equal due to about $3,186,420. The condition of other classes on the coast, we will suppose, swell the consumption that the entire value would foot up, and numbers, to say $3,200,000. This figure, then, represents the value of immediate home or coast demand or setor rice. If we take into account value of the importation for the Atlantic states, this demand would be increased about $4,500,000. Now it California can rice rice and make it profitable at six a pound, the question is, why not do authorities agree that the best lands are the chinvials along the banks, composed in part of decayed vegetation, but having sufficient clay in their intention to prevent water from sinking rapidly from the surface. Of this sort and we have millions of acres in California all ready to be turned into rice fields preparing the facilities of irrigation. The valley of auta Clara this irrigation easily and cheaply be supplied by artesian wells. The water now running from wells unappropriated, would supply irr to irr are thousands of acres of rice irrigation canals already built and built in the San Joaquin valley will likely thousands of acres with the nec- Call for a Peoples' Nominating Convention. The mines in this District are becoming so much as famous as those in the Clarke and Holcomb Valley Districts. They were first discovered by Mr. Schelly, of Anaheim and the locations have mostly been made by citizens of that place. Quite a large quantity of very rich ore has been taken from the mines, which has sold in rude buildup in San Francisco for from $650 to $700 per ton. From the mines the shipment has been made via Anaheim to San Francisco. The leads that have principally been worked so far, are the "Big Blue" "Lone Valley," "Sonoma" and "Comet." These mines are situated about 60 miles north-east of an Fernarino, near the old Cusenbury and 15 miles from Holcomb Valley, and fifty or sixty men employed in working them. Two companies are now making arrangements to put up mining works. The successful development of mines in such rich districts as the "Clarke," "Hole mh Valley," "Ord," "Twenty-nine salms'an' lumber," make it appear as though a new era of prosperity was beginning to dawn upon our town and county. The amount of supplies required for these different mines when they get fairly under way—will be no small item, and San Bernardino must and will be the depot from which they are drawn—San Bernardino Guardian. GREAT SALE—Don Juan Forster has sold Santa Catalina Island for $3,750,000.
