Southern Californian SATURDAY ... MAY 24, 1873 Anaheim Hospitality. Quien, the correspondent of the San Diego World, thus discourses on Anaheim hospitality: My appreciation of the hospitality of the people of Anaheim is heartfelt, and almost too deep for any words of mine to express, and indeed I was never more kindly treated in any place, and by any people, than I have been during my short sojourn here: One reason and probably the principal one, however, of my being so warmly received, has been the unceasing friendly attention of Geo. C. Knox, the elegant, gentlemanly editor of the sole paper of this place—the Southern California—who, with nothing to warrant his hospitality save my own introduction of myself, has introduced me unhesitatingly to all his friends, and all the pleasures offered himself have been equally opened to me. Through him I was treated, on the first night after my arrival, to one of the most delightful evenings it has ever been my lot to pass, and which will linger in my memory for "many days" as having yielded the most exquisite pleasure. I feel most deeply gratified to the young ladies who entertained me, for their charming and accomplished offering of music, and their trouble and kindness in initiating me into the mysteries of the after my arrival, to one of the most delightful evenings it has ever been my lot to pass, and which will linger in my memory for "many days" as having yielded the most exquisite pleasure. I feel most deeply gratified to the young ladies who entertained me, for their charming and accomplished offering of music, and their trouble and kindness in initiating me into the mysteries of the truly engaging game of "How do you like it?" in which I gained an enviable reputation for brilliancy of intellect, by listening at a key-hole. I have also to thank a distinguished scientist who was present, for a very learned and instructive disquisition on fossils, a subject which he treated with rare understanding, and in his enthusiasm, closely allied himself with. A second dispatch, dated the 16th, says that Hasbrouck and Mason did not make the junction as reported furthermore, that the patch from Yreka last night, dated at the Lava Bed the 15th of May, says a junction has been formed around Captain Jack's last stronghold by Mason and Hasbrouck's command, and the prospects were that all the Modoes would be captured. A second dispatch, dated the 16th, says that Hasbrouck and Mason did not make the junction as reported; furthermore, that the Modoes made their escape from the stronghold by three routes, and encamped on the Snow Mountains, 20 miles south of the old position.
