CASA LINDA.
A Short Visit to the "Beautiful Home"—A Valuable Orchard—A Little Digression for the Benefit of Newspaper Correspondents.
While in Los Angeles last Saturday we paid a short visit to Casa Linda, the beautiful home of T. Jeff White. Inumerable newspaper correspondents have unhinged the linch-pins of their imagination, and wrote gusbingly of this place, but we are bound to confess, that much as we dislike that peculiar style of writing, we are more able to forgive them after having ourselves seen the beauties of the place of which they wrote.
A DIGRESSION.
We are one of those who do not believe in letting our imagination get the better of our veracity. The correspondent of the period, how-
A GENEROUS GIFT.—The trustees of the Presbyterian Church of Anaheim, were agreeably surprised the other day, by receiving a draft for two hundred dollars from Mr. Cox a resident of New York. Mr. Cox is a son-in-law of E. S. Saxton of this place, and he has no doubt been made aware of the struggle being made to build a house of worship in Anaheim, through the letters of Mr. Saxton. The gift was entirely unsolicited, and what adds to its value, is the fact that Mr. Cox has not the slightest intention of coming to Anaheim — will in all probability never see the church his donation helped to build. We have no doubt but that the trustees will take the first opportunity to express their gratitude to Mr. Cox, and if they do so, we will be happy to send him a CALIFORNIAN containing their resolutions.
ENTERPRISE.—With that energy that has always been their chief characteristic, Messrs. Heimann & George are making large shipments of home-made bacon and lard to San Francisco. They have already shipped nearly six tons of bacon, and as much more will be sent as soon as the carpenter employed by them can get the boxes ready. Numerous complaints have here before been made by the farmers in this section, of their inability to sell to the stores, their bacon and lard, and that it would not pay to send to San Francisco, the small quantity usually prepared by individual far-

A DIGRESSION.
We are one of those who do not believe in letting our imagination get the better of our veracity. The correspondent of the period, however, seems to have fed too much on the lotus fruits which imagination yields, fruits that unfit the palate for the more substantial food of reality. The fullsome, glowing, unreal descriptions of our own locality, that we have read, does more harm than good. Drawn thither by such descriptions as we have mentioned, the would-be settler experiences a bitter disappointment which even the apparent manifold advantages which we possess, can not allay, and be leaves us to settle in some other spot, much less desirable, but which never had the misfortune to be "wrote up" by a newspaper correspondent. If these gentlemen of the quill would only stop writing such blasted nonsense, and faithfully record the many inducements apparent to everyone which this valley possesses, they would be rendering us an assistance in settling the vast area of rich and fertile land with which we are surrounded, that we would be truely grateful for; but if they will continue to write letters which lead people into the belief that this is a second Garden of Eden—where an apron of cabbage leaves is all that the balmy climate demands, and where the soil yields abundance without the preliminary sweat of the brow—then we can cheerfully dispense with their aid.

At some future time, we may be able to give our readers a full description of Casa Linda, but the shortness of our visit precludes any extended notice. Wool Shipments to New York.
Some of the principal wool-raisers in the northern portion of the county are shipping their wool direct to New York through the Pacific Mail Company. Mr. H. McLellan, the agent of the company at Los Angeles gave us the following list of such shipments: San Fernando Sheep Company 178 bales; J. W. Hellman 36 bales; R. Burnett 200 bales. The San Fernando Company have all their wool compressed in a patent wool press, generally compacted to about 20 pounds to the shipped nearly six tons of bacon, and as much more will be sent as soon as the carpenter employed by them can get the boxes ready. Numerous complaints have here before been made by the farmers in this section, of their inability to sell to the stores, their bacon and lard, and that it would not pay to send to San Francisco, the small quantity usually prepared by individual farmers. Indeed, we call to mind that such a complaint was the burden of a communication that appeared in the columns of the California a short time ago. All this has been remedied by the business tact of the firm named, they paying the farmers in from thirty to ninety days, the market rate in San Francisco.
Alcohol Insanity — Some three weeks ago, Antonio Morrillo was arrested on a charge of grand larceny preferred against him by W.H. McDowell. McDowell was employed as sheep-herder on the Los Alamitos up to the time of Morrillo's arrest, since which time, until about ten days ago, he has been "on a spree" in Anaheim. The loss of his money and his protracted debauch seem to have brought on a fit of insanity, which culminated in his visiting Anaheim Landing, where he purchased a bottle of whisky, took a light skiff belonging to Chas Smith, and rowed over the bar since which time he has not been seen, and it is generally supposed he committed suicide during his mental aberration.

BACK TO THE SUBJECT.
At some future time, we may be able to give our readers a full description of Casa Linda, but the shortness of our visit precludes any extended notice. The first thing to which our attention was called, was the shaded carriage-way from the street to the house. Walnut trees are planted on each side of the drive, and their limbs extending overhead, interlock with each other, thus forming a shady avenue, and in our opinion, it is one of the most attractive features of the place. The house itself is of an ancient order of architecture but handsome withal. Directly in front of it is an elegant fountain, while all around are flowers of every hue, making the air redolent with their perfume. In the orchard are one hundred and eighty-five bearing orange trees, which Mr. White assured us yielded last year, 190,000 oranges, and this year only 19,000. He could assign no reason for the vast difference in the yield of the two years. The oranges sold for from $7 to $14 per thousand. The walnut trees which line each side of the carriage-way are ninety-two in number. The profit on these trees last year was $500. The vineyard—the appearance of which denotes a thorough and intelligent cultivation—comprises eighty acres of bearing vines.
We can not close this article without expressing our gratitude to the hospitable owner of Casa Linda, for the kindness shown us during our short visit.
SURVEYING PARTY.—The corps of Texas Pacific engineers, who were encamped in town on Sunday and Monday, are examining a route through the Canion of the Santa Ana river. They will connect the present survey with a previous one coming into the valley at Riverside. The Brea Canion will also be examined as a possible route. Mr. Jackson is in charge of the party at present, Mr. Crawford, the chief, having gone to San Diego to consult with Resident Engineer, Evans, regarding his future movements.
NEW PAPER.—We have received a copy of the Benecia Tribune a new paper started in Benecia, by R. D. Hopkins. From a residence of two years in Benecia, we have an idea of the amount of "rustling" necessary to fill four columns of interesting local reading matter. The editorials are able and well written, and all tend to one end—the advancement of Benecia.
The Daily Mail—The Telegraph Stage Company have been notified by the Post Office department, to commence a daily service on June 1st. The proprietors are busy making the necessary arrangements, and intend to start on the date mentioned. Mr. Hamilton is in San Francisco, purchasing extra coaches, while the different agents are getting horses, building new stations, and purchasing feed. From the fact that the matter is in such care as that of Hamilton, Roberts & Thomas, the public can rest assured of quick mails and passage. This line send passengers direct East. If parties wish to visit the East and do not want to go to San Francisco, two days time and expense will be saved by purchasing tickets to Sacramento, where full Rail Road tickets are sold to any part of the United States.
Personal—Mr R. H. Dalton, of the firm of Harper & Daiton in Los Angeles, paid our sanctum a visit yesterday. He reports that the immense trade he has in Anaheim in consequence of his advertising in this paper, will necessitate his visiting here quite often.
The Frost in France—We see by a late cable dispatch that the frost in the French wine districts has resulted in serious injury to the vines. The loss in the Geronde district is estimated at forty million francs, and in Bordeaux, Burgundy and Lyon the injury to the vines is proportionately severe.
