A DAY-DREAM.
In a long-forgotten pocket,
Tied up with a silken band,
found it—only a letter—
Traced in a girlish hand;
read it over and over,
Ah, me! as I did before,
a she days that were full of sunlight—
The days that are no more.
Dreamed of a golden summer,
Far back in a joyous time,
When every day was a poem
And every hour a rhyme;
Here came a fragrance of roses,
And lilacs, and mignonette,
And a sound of sylvan music,
And the eyes that are with me yet.
Flood of purple sunset
In scintillant glory came,
I the deep-old forests kindled
And burned like a fluid of flame,
Here came a girlish figure,
With billows of floating hair,
And she bent her face above me—
An angel over my chair.
Aw it all in a moment,
While I held the crumpled sheet there is now apportioned only one operative hand to each 3,200 acres. Out of the entire population within the agricultural area, one full half are congregated in cities, towns and villages. Yet, notwithstanding this small number of laborers, the value of produce raised last year is estimated to approximate $40,000,000. This yield is equal to over $3,000 to each hand engaged in its production. This result follows from the wealth of natural resource in California, and indicates the inducements which the State holds out to immigration. The land lies open to the labor of at least ten times as many men as it now employs, before its yield per hand need be materially decreased. These figures seem so large that we might suspect error somewhere in the estimate. But, turning to the Assessor's books, they receive confirmation which is the stronger because it is indirect. The statistics from which the foregoing figures have been compiled indicate that there is about 242,000 property holders in California. The assessed value of property is $636,000,000. This shows an average of over $2,600 to each property holder—a figure which establishes so high a degree of average and aggregate wealth, that it may be accepted as confirming the figures already obtained

Agricultural Production.
How many laboring hands has Calforeen able to employ during the past
in raising and harvesting twenty milbushels of wheat? The answer to
question must be induced from the result of the United States census in 1870.
The estimates returned by the several
city Assessors to the State Surveyoral last year, 1872. The total population of the State, according to these esses, is in round numbers 666,000. In
to get at the operative agrieultural
is the population of the mining counmay be first deducted say as follows:
Amador, Calaveras; El Dorado
Mariposa, Mono, Nevada; Placer,
Las Sierra and Tuolumne—aggre3,000. Deducting this number leaves
aggregate for the remainder of the
573,000. It is true that a portion of
people of those mining counties are
used in agriculture, and the products
of their labor go to swell the total crop;
their number is less than that portion
of the population of the other counties
is engaged in the lumber business
sheep and cattle raising. From the
last ascertained (573,000) is next
deducted the aggregate population
cities and towns who also are not
used in agriculture; say of San FranSacramento, Oakland, Stockton. San
Marysville, Vallejo, Santa Clara, Los
Lakes, Petaluma, Napa, San Rafael, San
and others, aggregating for those
a population of 2,000 and upwards.
There are some thousands of

of smaller places, but deducting the
there is left a total of 303,000—emmen, women and children.
Rarding to the School Census Marreport for the year 1871 there were,
counties now under consideration,
going the cities and towns. 172,000
under 15 years. These may be
divided between town and
error somewhere in the estimate. But,
turning to the Assessor's books, they receive confirmation which is the stronger
because it is indirect. The statistics from
which the foregoing figures have been
compiled indicate that there is about
242,000 property holders in California. The
assessed value of property is $636,000,000.
This shows an average of over $2,600 to each property holder—a figure which establishes so high a degree of average and aggregate wealth, that it may be accepted as confirming the figures already obtained as to its rate of annual production and inferrable accumulation. — Sacramento Record.
Where We Came From.
By the census of 1870, the population of California was 560,247. of which there were native 350,416, and foreign 209,831. The number of natives born in the State was 161,904: in New York, 33,766, in Missouri, 16,050; in Massachusetts, 15-334; in Ohio, 12,635; in Maine, 11,261. Of the foreigners, the natives of Great Britain, Ireland and British America were 89,321 (of whom the Irish were 54,421); Germans, 29,791; Chinese, 48,790; French 8,068; all others, 33,951. Recurring to the natives of different Eastern States, it is noted that they settle together in a clannish way. In Alameda, there are 968 born in Massachusetts and 236 in Missouri; in Colusa, 650 from Missouri, and 54 from Massachusetts; in Lake county, 355 from Missouri, and 18 from Massachusetts; in Mendocino, 594 from Missouri, and 97 from Massachusetts; In Monterey, Napa,
Siskiyou, Sonoma, Shasta, Tulare and Yolo the ratios are similar. In Marin,
San Mateo and Tuolumne, there are three from Massachusetts to one from Missouri; in San Francisco the figures are: Massachusetts, 7,147; Missouri, 664; in Sacramento, Massachusetts, 698; Missouri, 549. There is a close and nearly uniform relation between the numbers from Massachusetts and from Maine throughout the State; they are settled together; there is also an equally definite though less intimate relation between the natives of Missouri and Ohio. With the exception of San Francisco, there is no important county in which a majority of Missourians over Massachusetts men is not accompanied by a corresponding proportion of Ohioans. — Sacramento Record.

The Torture.
The only civilized county in the Old World, in which torture is still in use, is Roumania. Recently a few men were arrested at Bucharest, for hissing at the opera house an actress who was believed to be on too intimate terms with Ostyonflos, the prefect of the Wallachian police. The unfortunate prisoners, to their horror, were not released on the day following their arrest, but subjected to worse than mediaeval tortures. They were whipped with the so-called sand sausage, a bag filled with wet sand. This instrument of torture inflicts terrible pains, but leaves no marks whatever on the body of the culprit. The prisoners were thus tortured, in order to wrest from them a confession whether or not the hissing of the actress had been the consequence of a preconcerted conspiracy.
They denied it and were then treated to the joys of the "ash-bag," that is to say their heads were put into bags filled with ashes. The jailors beat with sticks upon the bags, causing the ashes to penetrate into the eyes, mouth, nostrils and ears of the prisoners. A refined sort of bastinado wound up the horrible performance. Two young men, who had been conspicuous on the above mentioned occasion, were then subjected to the torture of the so-called "truth-finder." The "truth finder" is a sort of wooden forceps, by which the temples of the culprit are compressed. This was too much for the sufferers, and they confessed all that their tormentors wanted them to say. The latter, however, have since been arrested, and removed from their official positions.
The Santa Fe Union says that the grapes now grown through the whole length of the Rio Grande Valley to the lines of Texas and Chihuahua, are among the richest in the United States, and perhaps in the world. Vineyards are yielding their fruit in great abundance, and the making of superior native wines is becoming a business in the country.
