Southern Californian GEO. C KNOX, EDITOR. SATURDAY ... MAR. 15 1873 L. P. FISHER 20 and 21 New Merchants' Exchange, is our authorized Agent in San Francisco County Division. The subject of county division, strongly agitated during each local election occurring in the past five years, has assumed in the minds of the citizens of Los Angeles county—living south of the New San Gabriel river—a paramount importance. Deaf has only moved them to renew extensions in the future, and during the coming campaign a more determined, a more united effort will undoubtedly be made to accomplish that, which is considered so vitally necessary to the welfare of this section. In the late Presidential contest, the votes cast in Los Angeles county showed that the adherents of the two political parties were very nearly equal in numbers; a popular local question would, therefore, possess great influence in deciding an election, and would give the victory to that party, whose nominees openly favored the movement. In a short while, Conventions will be held by each party to select from the aspirants for office suitable candidates. It would be advisable, before the conventions assemble, that those favoring division should give public expression to their wishes, in order to influence these nominating bodies in the selection of our future legislators. We would suggest that an informal convention be held at some central point in the southern part of the county, and that every one interested in county division be invited to attend, in order to determine upon the proper course of action to be pursued in the campaign. Communism, Fenianism and all which, in their operation, strike the heart of law and order. Known to be true, the indecorous hastily by the Executive in recognizing established government, a rebellion (to speak in the midst terms) to the preservation of order amelia selfs. This action may pose future—like chickens and coats home to roost. Millions of money have been the United States Government ing the demonstration by actual correctness of the various tertained by their engineers in the improvement of the Atlantic coasts. With no single exxon money thus expended has been cast into the sea. But one instance successful artificial improvement last charbor is known—the portion—and at that place the go from an attempted obstruction. Sunk on the bar, in order to preventance and excess of blockade but instead of accomplishing thtended, one of the worst harbors Eastern coast was permanently. A few thousands have also been on this coast without satisfactory and during the session of the lai additional appropriations have not to improve bad existing liht to create artificial ones. On acco shealing of the water in San bay, caused, undoubtedly, by ti to improve it, Congress has detrunct construct an artificial harbor anio creek; the wants of the bay go are ignored and a few more are to be sunk in the mud at W. In the annals of no other nation found a prototype for the general Jonahban" imbued with an ing sense of his abilities even It would be advisable, before the convention assembles, that those favoring division should give public expression to their wishes, in order to influence these nominating bodies in the selection of our future legislators. We would suggest that an informal convention be held at some central point in the southern part of the county, and that every one interested in county division be invited to attend, in order to determine upon the proper course of action to be pursued in the campaign. To successfully attempt to divide the county, our forces can not be marshalled too early. We must contest the question with its opponents, inch by inch. We must fight them in the conventions; we must fight them at the polls; we must fight them in the Legislature, and if we fail, we must try them again in 1875. Let the people of this section remember, however, that no petition—though unanimously signed, would have the same influence with the Legislature as the election of a man whose avowed purpose in seeking office was to effect a division of his county, and let them make their fight accordingly. Our Intention. Nordhoff's "California," though hastily written and incomplete, has been the means of doing much good, particularly to this portion of the State, by directing the attention on of the people living in the East to this section, and causing them to inquire, both by letter and actual observation, regarding the truth of the claimed sanitary and climatic resources of California. Now that the work of investigation has been commenced, it naturally falls within the province of the local journalist to make known any advantages of climate of soil, or of position, possessed by his particular locality. Believing, however, that the plain unvarnished truth is always most convincing, we have ever refrained from clothing in roseate colors our statements regarding the country. We have no desire to fill our columns with "gushings" describing cloudless skies, beautiful Italian nights, and "love-chanting mocking-birds;" we do not make Alna-char-like estimates in regard to the producing qualities of single acres of orange trees; we do not wish to create the impression that in this modern Arcadia the inhabitants subsist entirely upon scenery, climate and strangers. On the contrary it has been and will be our intention to confine our statements strictly to facts. We believe that a thermometrical record, showing an average temperature of 57° during the coldest month of the year, will prove more convincing to an inhabitant of the froz n Northwest than the most extravagant hyperbole; we know that the record of vine- and oranges set out as given in the local columns, will weigh more than the bare assertion of a country editor. Believing not to improve bad existing laws to create artificial ones. On account shoaling of the water in San bay, caused undoubtedly, by this improvement, Congress has deconstruct an artificial harbor area on creek; the wants of the bay go are ignored and a few more are to be sunk in the mud at W. In the annuals of no other nation found a prototype for the general Jonathan; imbuled with an ing sense of his abilities even dle, he is decidedly an original; to attempt the improvement works, he believes firmly in his excel the Deity in his handiwov. VINEYARD FOR S AT ANAHEE A Full Bearing Vine Where are the Vigilantes? Every year, just at the breaking up of the wet season, the citizens of Anaheim have been annoyed by the depredations of horse thieves. Within the last ten days, they have again made their appearance. Several horses, saddles and bridles have been stolen and no traces of the thieves can be discovered. If looks are any criterion of character, the hang dog, cut-throat looking desperadoes that frequent a certain doggery in our village are capable of doing much worse things than stealing horses. It is shameful that such ruffians are allowed to be loafing about on one of the principal streets of the town. We profess to be a law-abiding citizen, but if the vigilantes, or the ku-klux, or the Modocs were to make a raid upon them and carry them off to Sonora, we—would not censure them very severely!
