Flax Seed.
As the culture of flax is becoming the leading and profitable industry in Pacific Coast, the culture and hand may be of service and interest about to commence the cultivation. My experience extends over a number years, cultivating from 100 to 60 yearly. I am willing that other profit by my experience, and for the son I submit these hints.
There are a few old fogy ideas coated with flax that should be exploded. That it impoverishes the soil to an extent than any other crop—which so. It leaves the ground loose, and ter condition than wheat or barley. While wheat or barley derive most strength from surface soil, flax drawsily from sub-soil. The elements of wheat crop remaining after flax. In the West-ro States it is sown as a proprietary crop for wheat—a failure after firing seldom known. Another false belief that it will not do to sow early on a frost. For the last two years I have volunteered flax germinating in Decor standing the frost of winter without parent injury, looking healthy and growing finely during the whole winter.
The ground should be well plowed harrow following the plow, pulverized and smoothing the ground in the bestsible manner. The seed should then sown, harrowed and rolled. The area of seed sown to the acre depends also on the soil and season. Strong land with plenty of rain will require fifty pounds of seed to the acre, while less strong requires from ten to twenty pounds less to the acre. One point

Underlined take pleasure in informing the public that they have purchased the entire Twenty Acre Vineyard, Lot C. 3, (Keller's Vineyard), which they have laid out in City Lots, according to a plan on record in the order's office of Los Angeles County. A copy of which can be seen at their office in Anaheim.
Inquire of Mann & George, Los Angeles St., Anaheim.
For harvesting I have used a header and reaper, but am inclined to recommend the reaper. If headed and stacked, it should be threshed as soon as possible; if it is allowed to get into the sweat, it is very difficult to thresh.
I can harvest and thresh at a cost of two dollars per acre. To hire the work all done would cost about four. The details relative to threshing cannot be given in this article. It would require more than you would wish to put in this article—in fact, it would require an article of some length on that point. I think I understand it fully.
Threshing is the most difficult part of the whole business. Where it is not understood, twenty-five dollar's worth of seed can be thrown away, and the operator not know it. My advice is, to have none thresh but those who understand it fully. I believe the Vibrator is the best flax machine made, though good work can be done by other machines if properly arranged.
The yield is from $200 to 2400 pounds. I have never had a very heavy yield, as I have had adverse circumstances to contend with. On upland, from 600 to 1,000 pounds per acre. On adobe, from 1,200 to 2,000

There is one advantage that flax has over wheat and barley; it has no enemies to cut it short, such as rust, blight or insect, which cut a wheat crop short just before harvest. It is safe to have a part flax, even if it should not pay quite as well, to fall back on, in case of wheat or barley failure.
Its advantages over again are, in harvesting and threshing it requires less help, less sacks, less freight to market, and brings a much greater price—Cor. of The West.
Our State.
From away back in the time when the gallots of the old Spanish Padres first touched these shores, and the good monks fired with holy zeal, built missions. Christianized the natives and established a sort of semi-civilization, down through the gold fever to the present day, with its railroads telegraphs. newspapers and cities, ever and always has our beloved California been a sort of terra incognita to the rest of the world. Our people our climate, soil and seasons all seem beyond the ken of even our brethren of the Eastern States. Books are written, newspaper correspondents write without end and yet the people of the Orient know not, comprehend not the Occident—nor ever will until they come and live with us. Write or talk to them how you may, still they know us not; for how can one from Ohio or New York be made to understand a successful growth of the cereals with a hot sun and a six months' drought? He may acquire in our statement of the fact, but after all he fails to comprehend; for in his country he well knows a hot sun. In connection with a six months' drought means famine—simply that and nothing more. He hears of our immense wheat crops, remembers the drought, and in a solid sort of way accepts the fact; and if a Mussleman would mutter "Allah il Allah"—God is great. and he made a climate for California—a tell him our Winters are warmer than our Summers, the Summers colder than the Winter; and he smiles in a dust sort of way that convinces you it is hopeless to enlighten him. Tell them of Yosemite, and they will innocently remark: "Yes, it must be grand; a good deal like the cliff at West Point."
Flax Seed.
Culture of flax is becoming one of the most profitable industries of the past, the culture and harvesting of service and interest to those commence the cultivation of flax, science extends over a number of activating from 100 to 600 acres. Am willing that others may experience, and for that reason these hints.
A few old fogy ideas connected with should be exploded. One is to poverishes the soil to a greater extent than wheat or barley does. Heat or barley derive most of their from surface soil, flax draws large-root soil. The elements of a good remaining after flax, in some of States it is sown as a preparer wheat—a failure after flax been known. Another false idea is not do to sow early on account for the last two years I have had flax germinating in December, the frost of winter without apathy, looking healthy and growing during the whole winter.
And should be well plowed, the sowing the plow, pulverizing the ground in the best power. The seed should then be sowed and rolled. The amount to the acre depends altogether and season. Strong adobe plenty of rain will require about of seed to the acre, while land requires from ten to twenty to the acra. One point always six months drought means famine—simply that and nothing more. He hears of our immense wheat crops, remembers the drought, and in a solid sort of way accepts the fact; and if a Mussleman would mutter "Allah il Allah"—God is great, and he made a climate for California—tell him our Winters are warmer than our Summers, the Summers colder than the Winters, and he smiles in a dust sort of way that convinces you it is hopeless to enlighten him. Tell them of Yosemite, and they will innocently remark: "Yes, it must be grand; a good deal like the cliffs at West Point on the Hudson." Oh, its hopeless! Talk to them of our vineyards and orange groves, their minds fly straightway to Louisiana—and "Yes, but terribly malarious, and yellow fever there ain't there!" Oh, dear, it's too bad! We feel a good deal like scolding, but won't; only reiterating the advice of poor Greely: Go West young man—go West; and add thereto; Yes, go all the way. Come to California, and learn something of our State, the grandest gem in the coronet of our Union.
