RICHARD MELROSE. SPECIAL NOTICE. Mr. E. A. Pullen is authorised to collect all moneys due the Southern California. RICHARD MELROSE. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Apportionment of School Money. To "SOUTHERN CALIFORNIAN:" On February 1st the County Treasurer notified me of $3,904 80, and on February 6th again notified me of $2,755 61, and an unapportioned balance of $339 55 on hand, making a total of $6,999 97. I apportioned it among 6,173 census children, giving each $1 124, and leaving an unapportioned balance of $55 85, and divided it pro rata among the various schools, as follows: 1. Alameda.....$ 146 25 2. Anaheim.....348 75 3. Azusa.....86 62 4. Ballona.....137 25 5. Bolsa Grande.....38 25 6. Bogdale.....90 00 7. Cienega.....141 75 8. El monte.....209 25 As Usual—The weekly row at the saloon “Independencia Mexicana,” came off at the usual hour on Saturday night. This time, however, the programme was entirely new. Instead of the wordy warfare resulting in nothing, which generally occurs, the disputants came to blows, and, at one time, there was a most beautiful prospect for a heart-rending murder item—“Twas ever thus,” etc. Reporters are as liable to be disappointed in their fondest anticipations, as were the daughters of Araby. With— “The scream of rage, the groan, the strife,” The combatants “fit and fit;” but just as the pistols were being cocked, and the bowie-kniver were being drawn, one man got tired and “hollered.” Judge Kohler arranged the affair on Sunday morning as will be seen by reference to our legal intelligence. INTERESTING SUIT: Considerable interest was manifested in the suit of Langenberger, Blochman and Co. vs. S. Goldstein, and during the trial, which took place yesterday, before Judge Clark, the court-room was crowded with spectators. The Jury selected were Messrs. E. Evey, D. Evey, J. M. Gibson, J. Gwin, J. Taylor. Capt. H. M. Smith, attorney for plaintiffs, and J. G. Howard, for defendant. L. Halberstadt and Lew. E. Smith on behalf of plaintiffs, testified to the delivery of lumber to the amount of $157 41. A.B Chapman 40 acres in the for $400. John J. Weiss 66 acres in for $1317. Mrs. E. Ross acres in the vi for $500. Ward Bradford 146 acres in Sr rancho, Los $2,000. Alfred Robert James H. Pein in Los Ars $575 90. POSTPONED: tunate accide Frank Wilton will not perform tised. ARTESIAN WELL.-We are informed by Mr.French, agent for Irvine,Flint & Co.,that the artesian well at the Adobe station is a success. The well is one hundred and fifty feet in depth, and furnishes a flow of water sufficient for the use of fifteen thousand sheep.A large tract of valuable pasturage lying directly north of the station, and heretofore useless during the summer season,on account of the scarcity of water,is,by means of the well, rendered available the whole year.Three years ago an attempt was made to sink a well about three miles from the Station,但was abandoned as impracticable. ANOTHER CIRCUS.-The circus fever is raging among "Our Boys."They have erected a tent, and will furnish amusement to the juvenile portion of the community,at the low price of three pins They have caught about a dozen canines, and are instructing them d la Samwells. RICULAND ITEMS.-There are as many marriages in Richland every week as there are murders in New York. shown a summons issued by an erudite J. P. of this county, the orthography of which eclipses the most brilliant effort of the late Artemas and the document, as a whole, bearing the impress of a mind decidedly Bunsbian. The summons, however, would be perfectly legal, wore it not for the trifling omission of the names of either plaintiff or defendant, and requiring the defendant to appear before him two days after the serving of the summons. He also requires the defendant to "appear before me at my offis on the day of Feberwary, at one oclock A. M." We would suggest to the defendant (whoever he may be), that he would gain sufficient revenge by arousing the worthy justice at that unseemly hour, and demanding an immediate examination, in accordance with the summons served upon him. Personal.—We were pleased to receive in the sanctum, on Sunday, C. Uhlig, of the Coast Survey. Our friend Uhlig, appreciating our ignorance, drops "the shop" when he come up, and discusses only problems relating to "seven out." H. Rosenbaum passed through town on Thursday, en route to San Juan. Capt. H. M. Smith, J. G. Howard and W. B. Roe of Los Angeles were in town yesterday. For the very best Photographs, go to Bradley and Rulofson's gallery without Stairs. Ascend in the Elevator, 420 Montgomery-st., San Francisco. They have erected a tent, and will furnish amusement to the juvenile portion of the community, at the low price of three pins. They have caught about a dozen canines, and are instructing them à la Samwells. Riculand Items.—There are as many marriages in Richland every week as there are murders in New York. It is proposed to enlarge the Chapman ditch, in order to supply Santa Ana and Tustin City with water. Minute Address.—A friend of ours received a letter through the Postoffice the other day, addressed as follows: "To ——, Anaheim, Los Angeles county, State of California, U. S., care of Heimann and George; well known merchants in Anaheim." Libel Suit.—Geo. Miller the proprietor of the Star restaurant, has been sued by Isaao Calisher for defamation of character. The damages are laid at ten thousand dollars. Rather Slow.—We received the Los Angeles Express of January 28th on Wednesday last. Twenty seven miles in sixteen days is rather slow time in these days of fast travel. Masonic.—The stated meeting of Anaheim Lodge No. 207 F.: and A.: M.: takes place this evening. Deeds Filed. A. B Chapman to Richard Ends 40 acres in the Santa Ana rancho, for $400. John J. Weglein to H. D. Polhemus, 66 acres in township 43, r 10, w for $1317. Mrs. E. Ross to William Bush, 20 acres in the vicinity of Santa Ana, for $500. Ward Bradford to M. H. Wright, 146 acres in Santiago de Santa Ana rancho, Los Angeles county, for $2,000. Alfred Robinson, Trustee, to James H. Pettit, 34 30-100 acres in Los Angeles county, for $575 90. Postponed.—Owing to the unfortunate accident which befell Mr. Frank Wilton, the theatrical troupe will not perform to-night, as advertised. They will probably play here some time next week. An Increase.—A party of emigrants, who were camped east of town last week, were unexpectedly increased by the advent of a bouncing boy into this "wale of sorrow." More Rain.—On Saturday night we were visited with another heavy shower of rain. The rain-guage of Dr. Higgins showed 9 16 of an inch. These Mesdames have honored the California, by sending their paper with a request to exchange. It is a very nice paper for the family circle (a bachelors). We make it a conscientious duty to read our exchanges, and, of course, have perused the weekly: Should our readers perceive any immorality or looseness of expression in our articles this week, they will please attribute it to the performance of the aforesaid duty, and its influence on our feeble intellect. We have before us a sample copy of the Federalist, a newspaper devoted to politics, literature and finance. As its name denotes, it will advocate the principles upheld by the old federal party, to which Washington and Alex Hamilton belonged. It presents a good typographical appearance and is well edited.
