"The Southern Pacific and Texas railroads, now under rapid constriction will within three years give us a connection with all parts, not only fornia but of the whole United States. GENERAL MERCHANDISE,
Notwithstanding the immense gains already enumerated as peculiar valley, such as fertility of soil, ablity of water and convenient and safe shipment of produce, our climate gives value to the whole. We can without fear of contradiction, that not only the best country but the climate in Southern California. Other in the southern part of the State excellent climates, but they have no try, or none worth speaking of; though they have convenient access sea, are, from their location, distant the projected and direct railroad which owing to the location of the passes through the mountain pass through this valley. All other are impracticable; and whilst they but a limited choice of climates, we a great variety of them, and all good On the sea coast the air is cool and ing, never cold or harsh. From ther every mile you advance toward the interior gives you a change of tempera air becoming sensibly dryer and milder you proceed. Both Los Angeles and heim are located about 12 miles from sea, and both have delightful climates each invalid wants a climate just as his particular disease, and here place where he can find it; and has selected the location that suits him secure a piece of land, and in a few create for himself an earthly paradise rounded by its exuberant vegetation the tropics without thir saltry and vating climate. Mr. Francis S. Miles, of New York, a confirmed consumptive for 15 years, after having tried for years the best known resorts

South Carolina, Georgia and Florida, came
to Southern California, and after residing
several months in Santa Barbara, San Bernnardino and San Diego, has permanently
settled himself near Anaheim, where he
has purchased and is improving a large

all cases of deprived vitality; and Nice and

highly recommended for their excellence

RAILROADS.
Southern Pacific and Texas Pacific now under rapid construction, on three years give us a railroad with all parts, not only of California of the whole United States Pacific will bring us in direct location with the exceedingly rich densely extensive mining region of which Territory, possessing a very small proportion of agricultural will, outside of its own produc-tively dependent upon us for only of its population, which, alarms at present, will with the ad-cheaper transportation for their and supplies, soon become very this valley being really the only rural region in Southern California season of its position, monopolize it. By means of the same road, be able to ship our semi-tropicalapes, etc., without interruption in and winter, to all parts of the and Gulf States, and the interme-entry.
CLIMATE.
Mentone, in the south of France, have been highly recommended for their excellence in that respect. Mr. Miles' observations at those places, continued for a long time made the average between the Wet and Dry bulb 54°, at Santa Barbara and San Diego it is about 41°. It will be seen by the preceding table, that the average of three winter months at Anaheim is 7°, which is the proportion of dryness that suits the majority of invalida. In this respect Anaheim possesses a decided advantage over Los Angeles. places only 27 miles apart, each are distant only 13 miles from the sea. The difference is probably owing to the fact that the sea breeze passes over 20 miles of land in reaching the former, whilst it only passes over 12 miles of land in reaching the latter.
The soil at Anaheim is a sandy loam, always dry on the surface and never muddy; being retentive of moisture, there is but little evaporation; there is no malaria, and there are no epidemic or endemic diseases whatever. Physicians pronounce the country "lamentably healthy." This comparative statement of facts proves conclusively, that invalids need not look further to find a country and climate where, if not cured, they can at least prolong and enjoy the remainder of their life.
LAND TITLES AND PRICES
The title to the e lands is the very best being old Spanish grants, confirmed by U.S. Patent. Notwithstanding its fertility and many advantages, land is yet very cheap. Prices of unimproved land, clear and ready for the plow, range from $10 to $25 per acre. Farms, one-fourth cash, and one-fourth each year, for three years, with ten per cent. interest.
These low prices, however, cannot continue long, as the completion of irrigating ditches, boring of artesian wells, the immediate construction of railroads, and consequent increase of population, must, as a natural result, cause a rapid increase of value. Intending purchasers should not delay, if they desire to buy cheap."
Progress of Irrigation.
It is gratifying to be assured that the great work of supplying a valuable and permanent system of irrigating ditches and canals in California is progressing favorably. Already forty miles of the San Joaquin and King's River Canal have been completed, and the farms through which it passes are reaping the benefits of its life-giving waters. Surveys have been made from Tulare Lake to a point near Antioch, a distance of two hundred miles, and further surveys are progressing. The company has published a notice that its books for the subscription of 75,000 out of the 100,-000 shares of $100 each are now open; stock to be subscribed for at the present cost price of the work done. No subscription will be received for more than 500 shares.
Hospitality of Anaheim.
W. J. Gurnett, of Oakland. Grand Instructor of the Order of Odd Fellows, in a letter written from Los Angeles, thus expresses himself regarding his reception at Anaheim:
"I hardly know what to make of the Odd Fellows in this part of the country. They can excel all others in the reception of a stranger—a single instance will illustrate: Accompanied by Bros. Wartenberg, Benjamin, Smith, and five others, I held a session at Anaheim, and at the close of the meeting we were taken to the Planters' Hotel, kept by P. Gr. Flasher, where we sat down to as fine a dinner as I had ever seen; during which a band of music entertained us. Good cheer and a happy dime generally, was the word."
All the Lodges are flourishing here, and I will state that this is the most beautiful part of California I have yet seen, and is well worth a visit to see the many attractions which abound in the vicinity of Los Angeles."
